There are currently two examples being restored to flying status in 2013. One is the XP-82 from Walter Soplata's farm with the 2270 Hp Merlins, that is being completed, and another F-82-E that has the Allison 143, and 145 engines that produced 2250 Hp. My replica will probably not be flying till 2015-16...Don
@spacepatrolman No, Had his own company Hughes Aircraft Company (later Hughes Aerospace) Which was not affliated w/ North American Aviation which made the P 51 Mustang.
Does anyone know if Bill Koleno (of Titan-51 fame), flew his P-82 replica to Osh Kosh this year? He is building a 60% scale model with four seats, out of all aluminum. Let us know, and if you can, post a video. Thanks, Don .
Pilotdave, there is an F-82-F being developed that is supposed to be flying in 2015 with two 800 hp Falconer v-12s, the same engine that powers the Thunder Mustang. If you want one, save your cash and you might get one...Don
This was built to escort B-29 bombers from saipan to Japan, but the war ended before they got into the theater. an F-82 scored the first air-air kill of the Korean war. F-82's were also fitted with radar & replaced the F-61 black widow in the night fighter role.
It changed when the Air force became independent from the Army. The Army called fighters "Pursuit aircraft" as the generals in charge were all from the ground forces.
Someof them had a pilot on the left, and a radar operator on the right. Both sides had controls to fly, but the right cockpit had limited instruments to relieve the "left" pilot when needed. This is truly a hybrid aircraft.....Don
You're right, "BANGING" the pylons at over 480 mph is indeed hauling butt!!. However, I don't know if they could do it at that low of an altitude. While the P-51H had a top speed of 487 mph at altitude, the F-82 was almost as fast at 482, and was actually "twice" the airplane. (This was true of the Merlin powered P-82s, while the Allison powered ones, could only achieve 462mph, again at altitude). Don
well, the Navy contracter with Convair in the early 1960's to produce a seaplane version of the F-102 Jet intercepter. it took off from the water on ski's that retracted into the aircrafts belly, the air force experimented with a turboprop engine version of the F-94 thunderjet, during WWII the Luftwaffe had a recon plane that had the fuselage offset to the right & a engine nacelle offset to the left with 2 engines in a pusher/puller configuration, In WWII Northrup built a flying wing fighter.
air force built a prototype "parasite fighter that could be carries in the bomb bay of a B-36 bomber. it would be launched to defend the bombers. then hook onto a trapeze lowered from the bomb bay & be pulled back aboard the bomber.
Some time the two pilots would turn different directions resulting in a horrific crash!!

@spacepatrolman Lockheed built the P-38, North American built the P-51 and F-82, you're thinking of the Hughes XF-11.

i think you mean p61
pilotdave1000 2 years ago
no, the F-82 replaced the P-61 in the nightfighter role in the late '40s
kdraper2007 2 years ago
The P-61 was redesignated the F-61 in 1947 when the Army air force was made an independent service. (U.S. Air Force)

Were there 2 pilots? If so, I hope they agreed on who was in control.

The view from the bottom during the flyby of the radar equipped TM is my favorite. Truly a distinct looking aircraft. Don

@kdraper2007: You are thinking of the XF-85 "Goblin" fighter.
