  • Can somebody help me ? I have a sample body I got from a tutorial and I totally transformed it to something else, but it will render but will not save as anything.....is their some kind of lock on it...and how can I get around that. Thanks guys

  • i think 3d stutio max is a program not made for enthusiasts becouse it is too complex you must know what everything does and try to learn in by yourself and that takes a lot of time even before you try to buld something.

  • i learnt in bout 2 weeks and iv already nearly finished modelling a car.... i use to use gmax though like 4 years ago... didnt remember too much at first XD

  • Building something isn't that hard. You have the basic geometric tools in Edit Poly that you can easily learn about through experimentation or watching a video and then the stock modifiers aren't too numerous and obscure that you can't easily figure out how to use them.

    What's interconnecting things and doing special effects are complex, but not too horrible.

    What really are complex are materials.

    and i have to disagree. i learned all the basics in my spare time over the course of few months using tutorials i googled. i'm now learning to animate (i do know the basics but i'm having some issues with clothes clipping under the character) and when i'm done with that i'll prolly go around look for more efficient ways to do the stuff i do (this video is one step in that direction btw ;p )

    I always had the question: which difference between editable poly and editable mesh?.

  • as far as i know, a mesh is triangles, while a poly is quads.

    Quads are good for animating cause they easily deform, but they are essentially made up of triangles as well.

  • Man, it would be better to write the name of the buttons in the video. Sometimes i cant find them cause the resolution is not clear.

    One more thing, how about 3D max 2010? is it the same way? cause i cant make some things that way.

  • can painting work on low poly models?? i box model humans...so they dont have have allot of vertices. is there a way to add more vertices??

  • Try using the Meshsmooth modifier (NURMS). Youll be able to acheive a MUCH better shape, with LESS polys. I use Ireation 2 when modelling a body, then i change the end product to iterations 1. My semi- finished body (missing hands and a head) is only 2.4k on iteration 1. But i can turn that to 0, and get 608 Polys and just use noramals and scult with iteration on like 3 or something.

    Dunno about turbosmooth not used it yet.

  • maya and 3d max are from the same people so what the difference anyone tell me please.

  • From Autodesk's view nothing its just money, from a realistic view Maya is for animation and movies and Max is for games, illustrations and architecture (not to be confused with cad). On another note Maya is purely Mac only at least that is were its strengths lie, Max is PC's only and like wise that's where its strengths lie. So the question is really what you want to do with either, both have their plus and minuses.

  • Even if 3ds max, Maya and now Softimage are published by Autodesk, there are diferents development teams, so the software are not tailored as Microsft does with Excel and Word i.e. 3ds max is the software most used along the world (and the people pay for it), so if any of those packages are going to be under development wich you think they gonna choose :-) Sofimage are the most powerfull tool now avaliable, what about it? any opinions?

  • Max for games? do you really think that? there are a lot of blockbuster movies which vfx was done using 3ds max, I guess no vfx house can do everything using a single software. Actually 3ds max has 3 diferent solutions for character animation (biped, CAT and Puppet Shop) for free, it´s a package ready for production whatever you do it can be achieve fastly. Arch visualization it can be done in any sotfware,it´s true 3ds max now has a version focussed to do that but is not limitation

  • but I heard from their web site a while back that Maya help in movies like spider man ,lord of the rings and hulk I know theirs more but that is what they had on their site

  • 3DS max 7 takes tons of skill, practice and is approx. 2000 dollars for the standard edition.

    it is not iTunes.

    It's high-quality modeling software.

  • Both are very useful programs. Historically, Maya has been more NURBS-oriented, so if that's your preference, you might find it easier. The UI is totally different between the two as well. Personally, I prefer Max, but that's just my own preference.

    They are both the top-tier 3d applications in widespread use today, so either can do nearly anything you can imagine.

  • if you learn the tools first, you'll be modeling stuff like this in no time. the interface is extremely user friendly, and a little common sense is all you need to use most of the tools.

  • gaararocks it isn't horribly hard but if you have a friend or someone to teach it to you then you can do something like this much easier than if you were just kinda jumping in

  • what tool did you use to make the monster? shapes, geometry?

  • this is how I do it,

    1. you first start with a plain

    2. then put your picture in that plain using material editor.

    3.cilinders are recomended and are easier to work with, but if you want you can use boxes, convert your cilinder or box to editable poly.

    4. use vetex mode and try to match sections of the body parts.

    you can later on use a modifier called Unwrap UVW to texture your model. I recommend buying a book called "3DS Max 9 bible" if you're using 3DS max 8 get "3DS Max 8 Bible"
