she is a lot of work, but she's well worth it. You really have to be able to read a dog well, and pick up on the small subtle signs to own a malamute. Someone earlier mentioned, they are one of the most primal dogs you can get, instincts and all. Which is digging, chasing animals, chewing etc. they need a way to get rid of the excess energy or one, or all of these primal instincts WILL prevail, without fail. With exercise, the most intelligent dog, ever, and the cutest! Love mine to death
They will challenge you for the role of alpha, A LOT, in the form of not listening, doing what they wish, etc (they will not challenge you with aggression, its not in their nature usually). Most can't be trusted off leash, especially with other animals around, without a lot of training. My female Mal i can let off leash in my yard, in parks, etc as long as no other dog is around....if there is, she blocks me out....and i've worked on this with her since she was 9 weeks old, she's 2 now
A malamute happens to be part of my family, love her to death. Had a boy before her. She is an absolutely blast, very easy to house train. You have to give them a TON of exercise or they become destructive chewers...i mean BAD! Very lovable dogs towards humans...50/50 on other dogs. Male didn't give a crap, female depends on her mood if she goes after a dog. Would never harm a human, ever. Sheds her coat twice a year, and the house really does look like a snowglobe!!!!
I've heard that you are NOT supposed to shave these dogs because it can ruin their coats and it won't grow back normally... Is this true ?? Any comments would be much appreciated THANKS!!
@saphirejewelscoward I talk about the Malamute bec my family had since i was a freshman in high school. As puppies they chew on every god damn thing but are cute enough to make up for that. But you got to teach not to chew and dont be afraid to be a but ruff with em they can handle, ive seen him run full force in a metal door didt phase him at all. They are hard to train bec of them being stubborn and have a tendency to out smart their owners so be on your toes. You MUST socialize
@DeathKnightsCow them as pups with other dogs or they will consider other dogs as food My family didnt deal with it but a friend had her malamute eat a full grown poodle nicest dog but never grew up around other dogs that werent its breed. The malamute will love you to death im mean just love you and always have a smile, they know when your down and when your having a dinner a group meeting or something with alot of people they want to be right in the middle bec they are a pack animal
@catha86 Golden Retrievers have a knack for adapting to their environment, they were never bread that way.
If you plan on getting a Malamute, make sure it's happy, and give it LOTS of room to run. If that's not possible, Huskies aren't all that different from Malamutes, but they make much better pets.
@OverruledDood yeah but i mean golden used to be a hunting dogs and still is but now people bread them for being housedogs.. the same thing can be done to malamutes and huskies. doesn't matter if they are 80% wolf. wolf dont drag right? which mean malamutes can be bread to retrieve and such too.
@catha86 yes, it can be, they are stubborn, they are a 'real' dog, with real instincts, most malamutes have food aggression and dog aggression, if you are going to get one, i recommend reading and learning about them as much as you can
@mirnaknin I know all about these dogs. my conclusion is I wont be able to get one which makes me sad. but there are atleast 2-3 more dogs I can get. I am thinking of a shetland sheepdog now.
best dog ever ,we have had our nanuq for nearly 3 years and would not have any other breed ,great with my 3 girls ,so loving and full of fun ,you must be pack leader ,as very dominent ,shedding is an understatement ! invest in a decent hoover ! mines a miele ,our vax couldnt take the hair !
I absolutely love Malamutes so much! As soon I hear the name I immediately get a smile on my face. I'm going to get a Malamute one day and hug him to death !
i dont even want to say how many times ive watched this video, i got my alaskan malamute 1 month ago, and i love her, she is a challenge, but so worth it!!!
Speaking as somebody who has a husky and whose prof has a malamute...can't quite get how people mix them up. Mutes are huge, and those teddy bear eyes are a dead giveaway. Love them!
@ThePlatypus98 You can't hardly tell the difference between a Siberian Husky and a Malamute. Malamutes, Huskies and Akitas are the most primal breeds of dogs that are very closely correlated with wild wolves.
@obsoletefloppy Yeah I'm aware they are stalkier dogs, but they look very similar especially if you aren't aware of the characteristic differentiations.
@obsoletefloppy I meant to so the typical person....they don't even know what an Alaskan Malamute is and they just think it's a Siberian Husky, you dummy!
@Texxy2009 no what i wanted is to own one of the Huskies in florida since there are some here anyway. im not taking them from siberia because some huskies are in florida.
I have a samoyed and he likes to really play with other dogs i was thinking of buying another dog... would a malamute be good for him to play with? or they social with other dogs?
@WolfOfHumility malamutes ARE stubborn though, like all sleddog breeds. That doesn't mean they're saying that malamutes are stupid. and Bear's personality wasn't they typical malamute then, because he probably wasn't from a good breeder. Reputable breeders would breed for the standard personality.
@WolfOfHumility I know exactly what you mean ;) I hate when people say that rottweilers pit bulls dobermans are agressive, that's not true! they're just dogs for god's sake! they are very good guard dogs, that's true, but they are very calm and sweet. Any dog can be agressive if you don't socialize and train them.
"this dog is mistaken to be a saberian husky wow..... " WTF xD You seriously think thats a husky? a Husky in show weighs 60 pounds! xD They Are WAY Different, i have a siberian husky named Nakoda... They only have the same colors..
i live in Florida and i know they hate heat well im aware of that but theirs lots in Florida so i might as well own one.
i live in Florida my parents have a some what small house and my dad has 1 dog and my mom has 3, rotty at dads, a mutt (old) (not sure what it is), a mini Dachshund and a Dogo Argentino at moms and lets say i could get a dog which should i get a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute ask me questions for which would be better.
i had a malamute a long time ago but now i have a wolf hybrid. I live in south Texas and for some reason they both loved to lay in the sun :) These are great family dogs and are gentle but can pack a bite, my old malamute Zeus weighed 145 lbs and killed 2 pitbulls. Great lovable dogs but be ready to brush and vacuum!!!
@CryserAssassinator Very different. There is no such thing as a Alaskan Husky. It is a common name given to ANY sled wolf like breed of dog in Alaska. The Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute have GREAT differences.
I can't agree that any dog would be a 'bad guard dog'. If you're, lets say, being attacked. The dog can tell you're in distress, can it not? Would it not come to aid you?
@robertpetrea23 not really. but they keep you good company. from what i've learn and research about these dogs they are not that much.. i'd give them 2/5. They are loyal, affectionate and get along well with other dogs.
@tinychristian that depends. it really depends on how paitient you are with both cat and dog. sure they dogs and cats along but you have to be paitient.
It all depends on you how well you socialize with dog to cat. cause a dog and a cat can easily get along.

@tinychristian Honestly I have no clue, she's never encountered a coyote or another aggressive dog/species,
I'm not dog expert, but I'd think she'll be more curious than offended when seeing a coyote.
I'd say if you were to buy a big breed like this, make plans to house-proof the house, inside and out.
