  • Fake, is not the original sound ...

  • you didn't record this! This is fake.

  • @MrSilvertale I never said I did.

In fact, the actual source of the audio is given in the description.

  • fake

  • @PcGameplayChannel you retarded bro? read description

  • Okay, what is the song at the beginning? Love it!!

Regardless of the fact that it took me a while to realize I had my headphones swapped so everything was a little backwards.....me gusta. Very nicely done...

  • @AwsumCherry Damn, I meant to write "Very nicely synced..." Same thing I guess... :)

  • WTF! this is what people do these days!

  • I heard this audio on a video that claimed Dolby Headphone.

  • qué pasa, no hay más efectos holofónicos que los grabados por Zucarelli hace nosecuantos años??? es que nadie sabe hacer eso hoy día¿??

  • why did 27 dislike this video?

  • Amazing how you can hear his foot steps when he is sitting down!

  • @holdengenthree It's magic, I tell you. MAGIC!

  • Lol audio is from another video

  • What's that pair of binaural mics hooked up to? to your computer? do you have a stereo input? I'm struggling cuz I also have a pair of mics like yours but my laptop computer has only a monaural input, I can't get the binaural image :(

  • this is not original, just perfectly acted and synced to another video's audio

  • Comment removed

  • It is Okey. But you need to take more care in creating illusion- Mimicry Srinivos, Sound illusionist and mimic, hyderabad, india

  • Very cool example!!!

  • bad acting but still good

  • the matching video really helps the directionality ..pun intended

  • what song is this?

  • 1:32-1:41 rules. Thats amazing. How you do this? Can I code 5.1 Movies into stereo holophonic?

  • THIS IS SO FUCKING AMAZING!!! DUDE YOUR LIKE A WIZARD.

    (get a life)

  • SYNCED PERFECTLY LOL

  • Zucarelli is truly a genius to have come up with Holophonics.

  • There is no "other" video. The original is just an audio track.

  • Never play with matches!!

  • ...or run with scissors.

  • wow it actually scares me a little bit when I close my eyes! Its like s/o was there! good job!

  • Nicely synced. Well done

  • @skrippo10 Merci. (=

  • lol

  • :) nice!

  • argh, I felt him right behind me at the end x_x

  • My brain must be somehow different. This didn't work for me. I have always heard stereo in headphones like it is coming from behind me, and this did, too, even when it was supposed to be coming from in front. Actually, I think I have a similar problem in real-life, detecting whether a sound is coming from behind or in front of me.

  • Actually it's a common problem, many people experience it, and especially so with binaural recordings. It can depend on the quality of the recording in many cases, and also the quality of the headphones. You're not alone!

  • i heared this before.

But this is rly a good movie.

    "Looks" more realistic (;

    5/5

  • Nice Fake ;)

  • how to record this?

  • yeah: how?

    taht's the question

  • For this effect you record with 2 microphones on a styrofoam-head (where normally sit the ears).

And with the small delays the sound reaches the left and the right ear, your brain tells you exactly where the sound is coming from ;)

  • @Koelli91 How you add the small delay how you do this?

  • @Koelli91 not only the delay but also how much of the sound and the back of your ears are actually used to tell were sound is coming from. Thats why it works so well.

  • @Koelli91 That pins down only one angle(for instance, can't tell a difference if the sound is in front or below)

Intensity differences between both ears and intensity relative to your memory give you distance.

The outer parts and canal of your ear filters the sound. The unsymetric shape filters it differently depending on angle. Through some complex signal processing the brain can use this to tell the difference between above, below, behind and in front.

There are other cues as well.

  • @Koelli91 I am sorry but it is a litlle more complicated than that.

Just imagine that , when the sound reaches the 2 mics ate the SAME time and with the SAME intensity( for example when is strait up, or down in front or back), there would be NO DIFFERENCES so....no localization clues.

Therefore, Holophonics Tm is NO BINAURAL.......

  • Holophonic is a nice-sounding word. But dammit, isnt it the same as Binaural ???

This will confuse everybody. But very effective demo :)

  • wtf?! That was cool! ^^

  • For the record, AericWinter is NOT doing this "live." The matches demo is a Holophonics demo that's been around since AW would've been a grade schooler (I first heard it back in the early 1990s). He simply synched his own video to it (and added music and titles).

    Cool effect, though.

  • Yep, this was the result of a bored evening and me being very impressed with Hugo Zacharelli's ideas.

The sound itself is from 1983. For more information and other experiments, refer to the link in the video description.

  • Zuccarellis ideas are disputed. He wont let the Ringo out of his sight, and the few who have seen it say that its nothing more than an ordinary everyday binaural head.

Binaural demos have at least as much 3D presence, directionality, and positionality, at least through headphones, as the Holophonics™ demos. Binaural is an OLD technology, predating STEREO!

Holophonics claims to work through regular speakers to a degree. I can sense some, but not all, of the effect through speakers.

  • Wow... I got chills all over from that. I'm thoroughly impressed. O_O

  • YouTube's converter converts ALL audio, regardless of what it was originally, into mono.

&fmt=18 or View In High Quality does NOT change this. It gives you less compression (IF it was uploaded with low compression), but does NOT restore the stereo.

The ONLY way to get stereo on YouTube is to BYPASS the converter. The only way to do THAT is to do the conversion to .FLV YOURSELF and upload the .FLV, NOT the source .MOV or .AVI or .WMV or .ASF or whatever.

  • That flv-trick used to work.

    It doesn't anymore.

  • What, do they recompress .FLVs now? When did they do this? Because I've heard true stereo files uploaded in May and even June 2008, so it must have been VERY recently.

Does &fmt=18 restore stereo for a stereo .FLV?

  • Yes, exactly.

But for some reason, it doesn't do it for everyone. I always supposed it had to do with the video quality settings of your account, but I can only speculate.

  • I believe this is intended to be a binaural experiance. Binural and stereo are not the same thing.

  • I know, but binaural is conveyed through two-channel audio (thus the name), just like stereo. Its easier to tell people who arent audiophiles that its stereo, especially when explaining why the effect doesnt work without the "&fmt=18".

  • It wont work because its not in STERIO its MONO!! on youtube!

  • It is in stereo for most users. Just click the link in the video description.

If it doesn't work for you, I'm sorry.

  • this video is indeed in stereo...it actually was doing the effect on different sides of my earbuds when I did it. However, it was backward from what the guy in the vid was doing. Put on stereo headphones and close your eyes...you'll hear that it is on different sides at different times.

  • You know what I didn't think about? Just reverse the earbuds and it's right.

  • It happens to the best of us. (c;

  • i would suggest closing your eyes for this, just because the camera's viewpoint doesnt match the audio's reference point, so it will seem out of sync and lessen the effect.

  • And I tried so hard.

You do have the earphones on the proper way, right?

  • no no its not from lack of quality on your part! its a great video but the since watching a screen is different then seeing something in first person it just skews with the illusion. if the video was projected directly onto your retinas it would work, as it would match the directness of the audio. but nevertheless its a great video

  • Projected directedly onto our retinas, huh? I'm sure Google is working on it. (c;

  • estupido!!

  • es no estupido!

  • Since lots of people have been uploading binaural videos and not watching their own videos to be sure they actually work in stereo, I assumed you too were just as clueless. But some of the comments seem to indicate that they're hearing binaural audio. I'm not. It's monaural. As a result, this video isn't demonstrating what it's supposed to. Either it never was uploaded properly, passing by Youtube's conversion process, or something has changed since it was uploaded.

  • It still works for me.

However, a small number of users have told me that the workaround link in the video description did not work for them. I have no idea why it doesn't while the majority can hear the binaural sound. Perhaps it's the browser or the flash version, but those are just speculations.

Sorry if you're among those for whom it doesn't work. )=

  • Well then it's a mystery. I'm not sure what the link in your info section is supposed to do, as it points to the same video that I came across in the first place. But either way I get mono sound despite the fact that I have the latest flash installed and can hear other binaural recordings, not to mention my own stereo videos just fine. So if others only hear mono, you're not alone.

  • There is a minor difference.

The added &fmt=18 in the URL usually sends you to the high-quality, stereo version.

I have no idea why it doesn't work for everyone.

  • I don't get it. What is so awesome on a stereo sound?

  • It's more than just stereo.

If you listen properly (with the description link and headphones) you will hear 3-D sound with just two channels. That's what holophonics are all about.

  • Wow! that was so cool..it was like somebody was actually in the room shaking matches around my head...I guess that was the point(I hope), so basically I'm just stating the obvious

  • Wow! That was great! Somehow it actually works the same through my laptop speakers...

Do you intend to use this trailblazing technology in other video settings?

  • Oh... this looked like a ceremonial curse :P Admit it - you're a witch!

  • That's right.

Now you shall subscribe to me. To meeeeeeeeee!

    Ah nah. It's not working.

  • das war cool ;)

  • isnt the link just the same video?

  • Ah! I'm going crazy now! :P

  • Neato.

  • this was neat, it seemed like the matches were actually going around my head, maybe it's the acid talking, but at one point i thought i actually saw a box of matches floating around my head.

  • Maybe it is, but I'm jealous of it. (c;

  • ok, so there really was no acid, i guess you were just seducing my brain.....wait....is that what i mean to say?!?

stop messing with my head strange man!!

    lol

  • Excellent!

  • Hahaha.. I burst out laughing when you lit the match. Now give me back my 1.30 minutes. LOL!

  • Sorry, Nik.

    Finders, keepers.

  • Very cool!! :D

  • That was so neat, I was following along as well!

  • GREAT VIDEO MAN!!! : D

    Favorited!

  • I feel like I've just been knighted. LoL

  • I'll call you SirAericWinterfrom now forth. : )

  • this is awesome, I wonder if games actually uses this now? My comp is too old to support new games so I cannot check

  • Great vid and a fantastic effect. It was so realistic, I actually turned around.

  • I'm delighted you approve, M'lady.

  • Cool! We sometimes have Kunstkopf-Hörspiele in Berlin. But I haven't been to one yet.

  • OMG, that sounds like a great idea, though. Tell me when the next interesting one comes up and I'll take an ICE to the capital.

  • Oooh!

    Stereo...

It was Cool and a bit weird...

  • Wow, great job! One really might think you have one of those incredible mics in your livingroom! Very well done!

  • Toll! :-)

  • wow that was really cool! good job =]

  • wow, that's REALLY amazing! reminds me of a piece that a.... well, not friend... a stalker of mine sent me a while ago. it was about a hairdresser and you could hear the scissors near your ear and so on!

did i get it right that you used the audio file and moved your hand according to it? your hand gestures fit perfectly, so i couldn't tell without reading the description ;)

or did you just use the idea and produce the sound with two microphones? (<- does that work?)

  • What your stalker (OMW, you've got an online stalker?) sent you is something called "the virtual Barbershop". It's the most prominent example of holophonics, though I really like the simplicity of this matchbox track.

And yes, I moved my hand to the audio track. (That's why I had to mirror it. My brain couldn't cope going the other way in addition to transferring my movement to around the webcam.)

I didn't do it myself, in addition to the two mics, I'd also need a binaural head.

  • no, not just online... online AND rl *sighs* she's really obsessed with me, i'm getting slightly frightened, to be honest!

well, after my abi, she won't se much of me, so oh well.

ha, thought that was the reason for the mirroring (?). but i don't want to be rude, i'm sure i wouldn't have made it as good as you :)

  • Ooh! Cool! A RL stalker! I'm very impressed.

(seriously though - wtf is wrong with people?!!)

  • don't ask me...

well, it's not THAT bad, she's not spying at my windows or something like that :D

but ask anna how creepy she is! anna visited me in school some time ago and when i talked to her, she suddenly said "hey, your stalker has been standing behind you for some minutes, didn't you notice?!"

she just stood there because she wanted me to introduce her (i think!?!?) but didn't say a WORD!!!

  • Oh wow - that's pretty weird. I wonder what stops us just punching those people and yelling in their face 'Stop being a freak!!!' I guess you can never tell which ones are going to flip out on you though. Very very creepy. Luckily she sounds harmless, but like I said, wtf?!

LOL! Not at your windows? She'll get kicked out of the Stalkers Guild.

  • WTF? You mean she's from your school? She's not also in your class, is she?

Have you ever told her to piss off and leave you alone? What did she say?

  • yeah, in my class.

but that's exactly it: i DID know that she was a bit strange, because she doesn't really have friends (because she only wants to be friends with the "cool kids" and tries to copy them in everything they do, even if everybody knows that that's not her!!)

and then she starts to talk to me in icq and i think "oh, poor thing!" and now she loves me and laughs at EVERYTHING i say and wants to visit me and argh... never told her to piss of, though, i think i'm a bit too nice!

  • Haha, you give them a finger, they grab the whole hand. Ah well, I guess if you're too nice to tell her the truth, you're going to have to outwait her until your Abitur.

    Just make sure she doesn't apply to the same university as you, or you might never get rid of her. (c;

  • she's not just taking the whole hand but the whole arm! that's why she is sooo annoying!

yeah and i'm waiting. well, i don't see much of her these days anyway, i'm barely at school anymore because the only thing that i still have to do is my colloquium next thursday...

and then i'm going to see a bit of her at all the parties but that's it. just have to keep her away when she's asking me if she can come visit (because she can't!!) and i can do that.

and it won't be the same city, don't worry ;)

  • This was really amazing!

At the end when you're picture was gone I noticed my eyes were following the matchbox-sound down & up again although I KNEW that I couldn't see anything...

  • Yes still... you never know. There might be a matchbox down there somewhere. *g*

  • Ok, this video makes me feel really DUMB. I read the description. I clicked the link. I was redirected to the exact same video. I watched it. It was mono. I clicked the link again. I watched the exact same video in mono. I changed headphones. I maxed the volume. Still mono. Don't wanna be all hater but this sucks. Or maybe I don't get the joke. Is it a joke?

  • Well, that ain't good.

Does the new URL end in a "&fmt=18"? If it doesn't, you're not seeing the high quality version.

Maybe you deactived high quality videos in your profile? That's the only thing I can think off right now.

It's not a joke, everyone else, including Baabzi, seems to be getting stereo. I don't know why, though. Try adding &fmt=18 to the end of the URL manually and reload. Maybe it will work then.

  • The URL does end with =18 but it doesn't work. It seems to me that the sound quality is slightly better but no stereo for me, sir. I even listened to it with only the left headphone in my ear but I could still hear everything without changes in sound volume. Gero sent me a stereo video once and it worked perfectly! I really don't know what's going on here. This is frustrating.

  • Top joke Andreas and everyone else, but I think Anna is beginning to suspect something...

  • :-PPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

  • Hahaa!! You know you're my favourite, Honigmäulchen-chen, and I'd never let them play jokes on you!

(We can do this for real, to simulate the effect of the video.)

  • Shhhht, Z. You're gonna blow our cover.

  • perhaps you've just lost your abiility of hearing stereo?

hehe, you've got a very confusing life ahead of you ^^

  • ahahahah!!!! luckily i always use my headphones when I go on youtube always!!! that is just cool!!!

  • zomg it's kinda eerie! it would be cool for a scary halloween video!

  • kann ich auch

  • Wow! I've never experienced anything like that. I don't know how you recorded that, but it was awesome!

  • Haha, it's not mine. I just illustrated the sound. Glad you liked it, though.

  • Yea, I realized after I typed that comment that you said it was the original recording. Awesome job syncing the two!

  • Absolutely wonderful! This video is truly an experience =) You did an incredible job on the syncing!

  • I've always been fascinated by binaural audio, such a clever, effective, and simple idea! A friend an I experimented with it a few years ago, I still have the styrofoam head and binaural mics we used. :)

My first introduction to 3D binaural sound was an audio dramatization of Stephen King's "The Mist," made in the early 80's. I tell you, you've never experienced 3D sound until you experienced it in the form of a fully dramatized horror story! =O

  • I actually used to work for a company who produced those styrofoam heads. In the beginning I was like "so what are those for, puppet heads to display expensive headphones?"

I didn't understand the concept until they showed me. Incredible how something so simple can produce something so wonderful. It's odd how it never really took off while people resorted to installing expensive surround sound home systems.

    Do you still use yours?

  • Fantastic! Great synch job. At first I thought you were recording it for real with a stereo mic. The fact that you're not makes it even more impressive.

Funny the way the sound seems to pass behind your head rather than through it or in front of it. I wonder what aspect changes that perception?

  • I believe it's to do with a combination of: the quality of the sound (notice how the matchbox sounds a little quieter and a little more muffled when it's behind you), the difference in volume reaching each ear, and the time lag (sound travels quite slowly). The human brain performs a lot of complex calculations, cross-referencing them against its real-world knowledge.

  • Wasn't there also that study in which people wore glasses that would turn what you saw upside down?

After a while, the brain adjusted and recalculated and the subjects could see everything rightside up again?

  • IIRC, they still saw everything upside down, but after a while they were able to do everything as normal, without having to stop and think. I remember a TV show where they demonstrated this on one volunteer. Once she got used to her upside-down world, they let her take off the contraption. Her reaction was a little surprising, but I remember it quite vividly. What she said was, "Wow, everything looks so BIG!"

  • Yes, I've seen some studies about the brain correcting the orientation of what the eyes are seeing. You can even experience that yourself to some extent-- if you are laying on your side on the sofa watching TV, it will at first seem "sideways & turned" (like it actually is) and 'wrong', but after 10 or 20 min the brain "corrects" and it is like you are watching normally! Of course you are still seeing it sideways but the brain compensates and lets you know "alright, this is ok"!! Fascinating!

  • I think the brain just generally 'fixes' things. In some ways it's like smell. Smell isn't an absolute, what you detect is _change_ in smell. Otherwise you'd walk around all day smelling the inside of your nose. I think touch works similarly, or you couldn't wear clothes or sit down or whatever.

  • Just wanted to tell you that you added an extra S to the URL. Also, it would help if you told us the volume had to be on. You just told us to put in headphones.

  • I put my headphones on, but the sound was still coming out of my speakers.

  • Please turn up the volume to maximum and plug your headphones in to the corresponding socket. Remember that the headphone marked "L" is for your left ear and the one marked "R" is for your right ear.

After your sound experience, enter your PayPal account and transfer 10 dollars to if_God_had_wanted_smart_asses.He_would_have_given_donkeys_the_power_of_speech(at)gmail(dot)com

That's the usual smartass fee around here.

P.S. Thanks for the hint with the URL, Tony. It's been corrected.

  • Would that be US, Canadian or Australian dollars?

    [/smartass]

  • Anything but US dollars. Aussie is about to overtake them.

  • Bah! Thanks for reminding me. As the costs of my expensive trip to Europe keeps increasing due to the falling of my damn American dollars.

  • Yeah, sucks incredibly when that happens. Problem is the numbers all stay the same. One trip to the UK, it was like paying triple for everything.

Look on the bright side - I'll probably be in the States soon, so Shopping 'R' Me! ;D It's like all of America is having a 50% off sale.

(oh, sorry, that's _my_ bright side)

  • Okay, so I did what you told me and tried sending 10 bucks to that account, but it says it's an invalid e-mail address. It's probably because Gmail doesn't allow the use of underscores in their e-mail addresses. Perhaps you meant @yahoo or @hotmail?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I did mean yahoo. And make that fifteen bucks, now. Canadian dollars.

  • very creepy and i love it! :)

  • I love it!

    -PASB

  • Tooo Cooool!!!

Decades ago , I think also in Germany, they came out with "Kunstkopf" a recording technology which had the same effect. I never understood why it did not take off.

Do you know if this is the same???

    Thanks for the video!

  • Yes, that is exactly the way this was recorded.(=

  • lol.. kann sein das du am ende unter den tisch bist? XD

    ich hab verdammt schiss lol

    mann mann mann XD

  • Ich bin überall!

    *Muahahahaha*

  • Excellent sync job. I remember when Quadraphonic sound was the big thing lol. This was cool. Seriously, I just don't understand why it takes YT soooo long to implement something as basic as stereo sound. It's not exactly a new concept.

  • Awesome!

  • oooh.. coolness :D

It's just like the virtual barbershop video here on YouTube, only with matches ;)

  • Yeah, that video would have been a little harder to make. It was hard enough to keep this thing in sync. LoL

  • Oh - I was going to say, you should check out Dinzla's video for the Bag Tag with director's commentary. The stereo version of it is brilliant!

  • Will do. (=

  • especially the last shake is convincing (when there's letter on the screen).

At first I thought that might just be the fact that I'm not seeing you, but I watched it again with my eyes closed and still the very last part is where it really sounds like its behind me.

  • Yep, I always found that part one of the clearest, too. That's why I left it in. Do you like how the matchbox seems to go downwards at the very end?

  • Yeah I do, funny that its such an old effect really.

  • lol

  • ich kam mir leicht behindert vor als ich auf einmal in meinem zimmer rumgeschaut hab, ob nich doch eine streichholzpackung um meinen kopf schwebt xD

is halt schon spät...da darf sowas mal passieren .__. hoff ich zumindest...

wie auch immer, war echt ne PERFEKTE demonstration von stereo ^^

  • Könnte Dir auch ausgeschlafen noch passieren (war bei mir zumindest der Fall).

    Diese Holophonics-Technik ist echt ausgefeilt.

  • Wow! That was really REALLY cool! You mimed to this audio track that was created back in 1983? Very well done. I did not notice that it wasn't you making the sounds.
