Jock was a good balance between JR's ruthless nature and Bobby's honorableness, when the actor died suddenly I believe the series lost something it never regained. It eventually became too reliant on the JR character ; every other character became one dimensional in comparison. They should never have brought Clayton in he was so wet in comparison to Jock and it was patronizing and lazy to believe that Ellie could not have had fulfilling or interesting stories without having another husband
@jasonfury1 I agree. I have always thought that Ellie should have been like Victoria Barkley and not remarried. As for the rest of the characters, at times I rooted for JR with the rest of them being self rightious hypocrites.
I did not care for Clayton either. I understood JR's feelings toward him. He was right when he referred to Clayton as an outsider who did not belong.
@jasonfury1 i agree, but Clayton's character was originally intended to appear in only a few episodes at first, but audience response to his character was so strong that he was written into the show as a regular character. That's probably why his character and Ms.Ellie married.
Absolutely spot on. I watched the series as a boy with my mum and I thought, watching them again, they wouldn't be as good. But the eraly episodes are great. Jock really kept JR in check it certainly lacked something when he passed away.
Check out the movie "Dallas: The Early Years". It shows how Jock started out as a penniless young man during the Great Depression. Which perhaps helps to explain his character. You don't get to be head of a multi-million dollar oil and ranching empire by being a Boy Scout.
Jock had more respect for Bobby than JR because Bobby always stood up to him....Jr was too scared of Jock, which is why JR always did things behind Jock's back
MY OPINION IS: It is true that Jock Ewing was the owner of EWING but the thing is when someone is in charge or is put in charge of something...then that person should be told so. in this case bobby was in charge and was a partner also as well....i think bobby was right in this one........
Notice how Bobby's hair got shorter in this scene and he'd only left the office to come to the Cattle Man's Club...lol, guess he got a short, back and sides on the way...
Having been watching CBS drama re-run the series from the beginning its brilliant to see Jock showing his ruthless power like this. He built the company so he can do as he pleases. Loved the look on JR's face at the end - relishing how Jock made Bobby look like a twat.
@zooeyhall totally agree, well written, well acted by bobby and jock, and well directed...u could just feel the tension in the room...and although jock hated being confronted by bobby he respected him for standing up to him...i am now watching dynasty on line and dallas was by far the better show....but after jock died it just was not the same...he had such a strong presence.
@snoops71 JR set Bobby up yet again, Bobby was a fool...He knew how hard Bobby was working and he knew that Bobby was looking to close a deal with the cartel and didn't tell Jock and He knew that Bobby would fly off the handle and go at Jock and Jock would set him straight just like that...JR knew how to manipulate situations in his family and with his enemies....Bobby was at times all muscle and no brains.
He wasn't a great actor, but Jim Davis as Jock held things together. They were right not to re-cast. If Jock wasn't around JR would have went more out of control than he did, he didn't because he lived in fear of Jock. Jock also toughened Bobby up. Bobby would have been a weakling if it weren't for some of the tough love than Jock gave him when he needed it.
Jim Davis was magnificent in this show. He was'nt the greatest actor in the world - and he knew it. But he had been around the "bidness" forever, so when he finally had a big hit - he made sure he enjoyed himself and this rubbed off on the other actors. Everyone who worked with him on the show loved and respected him. It was cast resistance that stopped the producers from re-casting the role after Davis died.

@kclark1169 Bobby was always jock's favorite (miss.ellie shares this fact in the 1st episode of s9 which is the season which bobby is dead or the dream season) jock always respected bobby for being able to stand-up to him....bobby respected his father but he was nvr afraid of him. Jr. deeply loved and respected bobby (which is also shown in s9) but he could nvr get past the fact that jock seemed to favor bobby over his other 2 sons when jr always needed his daddy's approval!!!
love that scene. Is this the episode when JR sabotages Bobby Oil refinery. Man, I have watch that over and over on dvd. Oh, and that silly plane shot in the sky. Just recently saw Patrick on that silly bold and the beautiful and he is still awesome man.
@brut2011 When a person is in a position of responsibility, it is normal for that person to take responsibility by attempting to control the outcome. The worst thing is to have a power vacuum: a person in a position of power but unwilling to take control.
If your father's employees don't appreciate the opportunity he is giving them to work, learn, pay a mortgage, and feed their families, they should move on. Creating jobs is no sin.
It sounds as if you have allowed yourself to become bitter.
My father, who was a big 'Dallas' fan, would frequently recite this quote when I was working for him in the family business. But I guess I didn't take enough power because he kicked me and my wife out.
We're better off now because I took my own power. My father can keep his.
@Amar7605 Your wife is not a blood relation, and she can divorce you at any time and take what once belonged to your father, unless you have a premarital agreement.
@CloeBuckingham True, but then I guess my wife and I better keep our marriage strong! But my wife and parents don't like each other so I doubt that she would want to take anything from them. Although I do remain cautious.
@Amar7605 maybe you should have taken over and kicked the old man out and reminded him of this scene. vito corleone would NEVER have done this because his style was to earn people's trust. in this scene this was weak shit from an old man scared of passing over the reigns. this is also a great reminder of why you should never go into business with your family.
@vlunney I wouldn't say 'never' because there are several examples of successful family businesses. But trust and confidence is vital in having a strong family business. Maybe you're right - I could have pushed my father aside but that didn't happen.
@Amar7605 yeah ur right...nothing is like it used too... there is too much indifference, lack of respect, and any love in this new generation we live in unfortunately and it sucks
@mastermold2009 Jock was the greatest! In this scene, he is every bit the tough, in-your-face old coot that ruled the Ewing empire. Jock was also right. Ewing Oil was his company and its assets were his as well. Bobby was Jock's favorite, though, and JR was always insecure about it. Takapa was also, I think, the business venture that exposed Ray's lack of business skills. Ray was more like Gary in that department. Ray and Gary should have inherited Southfork & JR/Bobby getting Ewing Oil.
Jock's defining moment in all of DALLAS. He summed it up short, sweet and right down to the bare bones of WHO has the Last say on everything EWING! Jock was 100% right. He owned Ewing oil & no matter what son sat in its President's chair, Jock Ewing was the Chairman of the Board. He taught JR alot more than he ever taught Bobby but gave Bobby the "Reader's Digest Version" of the facts! JR knew enough to give anything Jock was doing without his Father's say so.JR should have ran Ewing OIL anyway.
Jock was one helluva man! He was a combination of Vito Corleone, George Patton and John Wayne all rolled into one. His generation of men possessed qualities that are all but extinct nowadays. Tough, Fearless, Strong-Minded, and Smart! The fierce patriarchs of his time have practically vanished. Husbands and fathers today seem more concerned with receiving affection from their families rather than teaching them the value of strength, discipline, and self-reliance.
@somewhatlongdong Larry Hagman, who played JR, has often said he was usually hammered on set. He never got in any trouble because it never affected his performance; when they said "action" he sobered up!
A truly awesome scene. Bobby and JR represent Jock's duality and in this scene you see Jock's blood lust boiling over. JR, the devil on his shoulder, is loving it.
This scene with Jock Ewing summed up everything That DALLAS was all about. DALLAS will be never be topped or duplicated it was the First real Prime time soap. The Grand Daddy of all the future Primetime serials. It set so many "firsts" that everything During and after it's Original run on CBS, wanted a few more episodes and someone said "Why don't we shoot the S.O.B. ( J.R.) That is when the TV's 1st cliffhanger was born. From then on Dramas & comedies alike all have used their own cliffhangers.
This reminds me of another scene. Bobby asked Jock at the breakfast table when he was going to tell Miss Ellie that he was the developer of Takapa, and Jock dressed him down in a similar way. JR looked up, smiled, and said, "I thought you learned this lesson, Bobby. Never cross Daddy when it comes to business. Never." Jock wouldn't take that crap from anybody ... in fact the only person who ever could talk like that to Jock without getting burned alive was Miss Ellie.
What's great about this scene is that it shows you Jock's two sides. He can be good, like Bobby, or ruthless like Jr. As Jock dresses down Bobby, you can see JR licking his chops, happy that the dark side is winning out.
So Jock took $10 million out of the account without asking Bobby, and Bobby pitches a fit... because Bobby tried to take $12 million out without asking Jock and the money wasn't there. How does that work?
You noticed that SOB was just sitting there with a big grin on his face. JR's a hypacrite !!!!! If for one second Jock let his guard down, Jr would have taken advantage. He'd screw over his father and Ms, Ellie to get what he wants
HEY DRILLER007...I THINK YOU MISTAKE SCARED FOR RESPECT...bobby was the only son who had the balls to stand up tp jock....bobby had no fear in his eyes...the only reason bobby didnt take that argument any further was because he loved and respected his daddy...a hell of a man that bobby was...
He came to the club to give jock a piece of his mind...he said what he had to say and got in jocks face in the process....i ve never seen ANYONE get in jocks face like that..he wasnt afraid of his daddy like that pussy JR was....he loved and respected his daddy....if that wasnt his daddy , he would have whipped that old mans ass !!!!
JR has every right to be pleased at the argument between Jock and Bobby. JR had received years and years of similar tongue-lashings from Jock while Bobby, the golden boy, could no wrong.
@SpikeMichaels You're right! I was a kid when that scene first aired, aside from this clip,I haven't seen it since; yet I've always been able to quote this exchange verbatim. That's the power of good writting.
This so Great to watch! I am tired of watching TV where the men of today are made to look foolish and clueless. It's good to see a relationship that is strong between a father and Son and Jock didn't put up with the spoiled rebellious brats you see on these " drama's" today
I agree. On the soaps they water down their patriarchs which is a shame. What made Jock so great was that there aren't anyone like him on the shows anymore.
Jock was not wearing a wig in this one , This is the Penultimate scene that summed up the Power Jock Ewing wielded in hi sfamily and his Company. He didn't have to check with Ellie or anyone when he wanted business done HIS way. The best scene ever on DALLAS along with the haunting Music in the background and the best was JR's evil Grin
One of his best quotes the great man sure had wisdom, what episode was the episode when he said the following qoute "Any man can win when things go his way, it's the man who overcomes adversity that is the true champion."
@gammergq Agreed. Another was when JR humiliated Cliff Barnes at the Ewing BBQ. "You went to far JR. Take away a man's dignity, there's no telling what he'll do to get it back". Words to live by as was the quote in this clip. I have thought of it many times along the way. Real power really IS...something you "take". Jock really was a winner, and one of my fav TV legends.
Is it just me or does Bobby REALLY look like a young version of Jock? I wonder if they cast them on purpose?

@somewhatlongdong Larry Hagman, who played JR, has often said he was usually hammered on set. He never got in any trouble because it never affected his performance; when they said "action" he sobered up!

A truly awesome scene. Bobby and JR represent Jock's duality and in this scene you see Jock's blood lust boiling over. JR, the devil on his shoulder, is loving it.

JR loves it too! to see Bobby and Jock go at it.......hahahahahahaha! Classic scene!

From then on Dramas & comedies alike all have used their own cliffhangers.

awesome scene...why dont we have actorsd like this anymore

I liked Bobby and all but he just didn't have "business" killer instinct Jock & JR had.

That man owns respect! Jim Davis was a brilliant actor and lifted Dallas to different skies.

Jock is a jerk

This reminds me of another scene. Bobby asked Jock at the breakfast table when he was going to tell Miss Ellie that he was the developer of Takapa, and Jock dressed him down in a similar way. JR looked up, smiled, and said, "I thought you learned this lesson, Bobby. Never cross Daddy when it comes to business. Never." Jock wouldn't take that crap from anybody ... in fact the only person who ever could talk like that to Jock without getting burned alive was Miss Ellie.

Dallas went to shit when Jim Davis Died. This scene proves just that.

What's great about this scene is that it shows you Jock's two sides. He can be good, like Bobby, or ruthless like Jr. As Jock dresses down Bobby, you can see JR licking his chops, happy that the dark side is winning out.

Jock is so cool.

If Ewing Oil isn't a public company, then the owner has the right to take out as much money as he likes.
If Bobby is "running" the company, then he's just an employee.

So Jock took $10 million out of the account without asking Bobby, and Bobby pitches a fit... because Bobby tried to take $12 million out without asking Jock and the money wasn't there. How does that work?

@libertyordeaf Bobby is a hypocrite.

... and people wonder why JR is the way he is.

You noticed that SOB was just sitting there with a big grin on his face. JR's a hypacrite !!!!! If for one second Jock let his guard down, Jr would have taken advantage. He'd screw over his father and Ms, Ellie to get what he wants

HEY DRILLER007...I THINK YOU MISTAKE SCARED FOR RESPECT...bobby was the only son who had the balls to stand up tp jock....bobby had no fear in his eyes...the only reason bobby didnt take that argument any further was because he loved and respected his daddy...a hell of a man that bobby was...
donhol17 2 years ago
theres that too, i see fear there too all the same.

@donhol17
He came to the club to give jock a piece of his mind...he said what he had to say and got in jocks face in the process....i ve never seen ANYONE get in jocks face like that..he wasnt afraid of his daddy like that pussy JR was....he loved and respected his daddy....if that wasnt his daddy , he would have whipped that old mans ass !!!!
donhol17 1 year ago
@donhol17 It JR was insecure it was because Jock doted on Bobby.

the only fight i can remember bobby looking scared. i loved the jock character. was a shame they had to lose it when jim davis died

Jock was the man!

Bobby was so out of line here. He should have kept his anger in house, and discussed this matter with his father in private....
colderbeer 2 years ago
I love Jock! "But first, we're gonna tie one on!"

NFitalianGuy 2 years ago 2

Jim Davis was wearing a wig in the Jock role by this point

One of his best quotes the great man sure had wisdom, what episode was the episode when he said the following qoute "Any man can win when things go his way, it's the man who overcomes adversity that is the true champion."
gammergq 2 years ago
@gammergq Agreed. Another was when JR humiliated Cliff Barnes at the Ewing BBQ. "You went to far JR. Take away a man's dignity, there's no telling what he'll do to get it back". Words to live by as was the quote in this clip. I have thought of it many times along the way. Real power really IS...something you "take". Jock really was a winner, and one of my fav TV legends.
