  • Do you ever reel it in towards shore? If so, wouldn't that "reel up" the bobber stop? What is a way to combat that? Resetting the bail? Thanks!

  • @nmigliore Not sure I understand the question completely, but I will try and answer. Once the bobber stop is tied on, trim it to no more than 1" ends. Slide it to the desired depth. This can be 20' if you want. Reel up all the way to just before the barrel swivel. Cast. The stop will make it way out and eventually stand the bobber on end when it stops. If it doesn't ever stand up, too deep. When you reel in, it is fine for the bobber stop to go back into the reel, but cast farther if you don't.

  • That was a huge ass hook set

  • why do you use a leader for Crappie? I use about the same setup but without the leader? just wondering, great vid

  • @skuzzy8u I actually explained this in the video. When tail hooked on a leader and swivel, the minnow is allowed to swim more freely and look more natural with only the weight of the hook hindering his swimming ability. It also allows him to swim endless circles without ever twisting your line. With no swivel and leader, weights slam down to the hook and change the swimming motion of the minnow. Split shots and such can also leave abrasions in the line that lead to break offs. It works !

  • Good vid, kind of dark but excellent training demo. Thanks

  • @CHOSEN7X7 old camera ! In HD and better production now. Thanks !

  • good thing he hooked it otherwise he'd been knocked out by the bobber lolz nice vid any1 learn how to jerk lol ur not shark fishing!

  • It was a long cast and wind blows slack in the line. Necessary. I have only brought in a pair of fish lips once ... LOL

A LOT has changed since this, my first vid, but I still let em have it and my hookup ratio is very high ... follow the thread of comments for more info ... been thru this before ... (eyes rolling) ha ha ha

  • that was a hard ass hook set!!!

i just have to give it a firm tap to the rod

cause i dont wanna rip the fishes head off

    but its all good

  • where are u fishing.?

  • @catfishing123456789 private pond near Richmond, VA ...

  • hey is a size 6 hook decent for crappie? how about for perch and bluegill? cuz i was using a ten i think and i kept getting bloody messes cuz they just inhaled the hook, thx

  • @HATINTHEKAT I'm not good with hook sizes, but I usually use a mosquito style bleeding bait hook. The gap is about the size of a dime. Bluegills you do want a smaller hook. Crappie have big mouths and you can get away with bigger hooks. It might help to be quicker on your hooksets to keep the fish from inhaling it all the way down.

  • @8darian1208 thx man, hey by the way do u recommend using a swivel for a slip bobber rig? for crappie and bluegill?

  • @HATINTHEKAT Yes, I do. BUT ... I only recommend the use of a barrel swivel just before the leader. My video on the slip bobber rig details the way I do it. The barrel swivel allows the minnow to swim more natural and in circles without twisting your line ...

  • Nice video. Looking forward to your new stuff.

As for some people's comments regarding the hook-set, it is important to remember that there is a lot of line out there and there is a bobber and a worm-weight that absorb a lot of the hook-set before the fish feels it. So, a soft hook-set would lead to missing more fish.

  • @jonathanalexand wow. An educated comment ! ha ha ha You hit it right on the nose ... people can tease all they want when I'm catching one fish after another ... LOL

  • Constructive criticism I can handle ... questions ... random comments ... but angry idiots, just don't bother ! Your comments WILL NOT be approved or seen by video viewers. Takes such a big person to dole out hate over a computer ...

  • Well, with that willow branch he's using of a rod, I think he probably has to set the hook that hard LOL

  • You set the hook like it was a Tarpoon!

  • Nice effort doing the fishing and camera work yourself. Where were you?

  • @Scat2533 this is on a private pond in VA. It was my first attempt a year ago to film. I just setup the camera and rolled with it. Been putting more effort into making it better since then. Soon I hope to have an HD camera and better editing software and make a better show ! Thanks !

  • jesus, are you trying to rip off its head? ive seen people do that before and they end up hooking themselves....

  • @mlien89 nope ... and my name is not Jesus, my son ! LOL ... follow the comments ... I do just fine and don't hook myself or others ....

  • its a damn float, not a bobber

  • @FISHORDIE100 Really !? Bobber ... I mean, float etiquette now !? ha ha ha

Call em whatever you like ! LOL

  • just wondering, why do you yank back so hard?

  • old habits die hard and it is effective (95%). Read thru the comments to get the jist of it ....

  • because crappie will bight that thang and run with it

  • I love Road runners you should use them!!

  • @ph,illy442 ... I DO ! I have 1/16oz & 1/8oz in Red, White & Charteuse and love using them in the fall in creeks off the river ...

  • @8darian1208 yeah they rock

  • @philly442 yo ... lots of kids on my youtube ! Please repost your comment if you like without the cursing ! I use roadrunners all the time when jigging for crappie ... just not in this video ! :)

  • @8darian1208 SORRY DUDE IM 18 BTW!

  • Good hook set. Hard set always goes to the top of the mouth. I don't play with the crappie either. Hook em and bring them into the boat!

  • first one not ribbing me on the hookset ! ha ha ha ... it's a lot different when on a boat ! ... but I do tend to still give it to em a little ! >:D

... when in doubt ... stick it to em !

  • i think you set the hook a little to hard

  • really !? ... don't think I've heard that one before ! :D LOL ... you just can't knock something that works, but I do need to ease up a little. :)

  • dont hook set so hard crappies mouths are like paper a good lil sweep set would be just fine good vide and slip rig.

  • the vast majority of my hooksets are in the top of the mouth, which is very hard. the side of their mouth is soft. i could stand to ease up for sure, but I have only brought in only one set of fish lips and have caught thousand of crappies. in my defense, I hook up 95% of the time, and they don't get away. When at full cast, sometimes you need to ensure the slack is removed from the wind blowing the line across the water. then anticipate the direction they go and set in the proper direction.

  • ... so sometimes that requires a bigger hookset ! ... growing up a bass fisherman has some influence, too ! :D LOL ... Tight Lines !

  • good fishin it seems when your catchin fish you want to make a awsome fishing vid and they stop biten.

    LOL

  • yeah, I finally did get a big one on camera, tho ! check out the winter fishing vid I just posted from the james river. still the same problem with them being camera shy .... i go to video and the rain just won't stop and floods the river ! dilligence paid off, tho ....

  • I did that once with the hook set and i reeled in some fish lips that was a shame though but u never know whats on the end of your line good vid.

  • i hate to admit ... but I have done that myself ! ... and got a real good laugh from it ! :P

  • hi i can tell you are a bass fisher from the way you set the hook.

FROM D.R.F.B Dem River Fishin Boys

  • ... and you are right ! Pretty much where it all started, with the almighty bass ! I have spent the last 10 years going for different species and new challenges ... Dem River Fishin Boys like a wicked hook set !? :D

  • ya wanna join us

  • send me a message and let me know what you're all about and where you're from ....

  • you set the hook like your hooking a salmon

  • okay ... in defense of all the hookset razzing ... not a bad idea to follow thru with your hookset when casting out a full cast. the wind will move your line across the water and you don't always have the time to get the slack out for a proper contact and quick snap hookset. when in doubt i always blast em ! blasted a few salmon when i was in alaska, too ! ... not a single one escaped the thunderous hooksets !!! >: )

  • oops ! was redundant and tried to delete my comment but accidentally removed a LMAO ...

didn't mean to remove and ridicule at my expense ! >:D

  • lol, i like ur vids man especially the gar.. but your hookset was crazy intense for a little crappie.. it made me spit my coffee everywhere this mornng it was so rediculous lol.

  • well you never know when a BIG crappie is on the other end of the line !? ... but yeah, that hookset is prob crazy intense for the big ones, too ! hahahaha ... glad everyone is having so much fun ! .... just know that the fish don't get away ! :)

  • ANY ridicule .... (typo)

  • That was a brutal hookset lol great vids

  • This video is a lot of help. Thank you for your video's! God Bless and good luck CATCH'n

  • pronounced croppie

would you like to eat some croppie?

would you like to eat some crapp....ie?

  • i like crappie chowder .... >:)

  • hahaha

  • however u want to pronounce it ... stay tuned for some BIG crappie this fall from the tidal james river !

  • definatly a bass fisherman i can tell by the hookset!!!

  • ha ha ha ... u hit it on the nose ! i am getting better with it as i get older ! hard to shake that habit tho ... u should see me set the hook on an 8' blue shark ! PING ! hahahaha .... :)

  • well i'm not a redneck, but i am in the south ... so maybe there is something to that ! seems backwards tho ... northerners seem to like that "A" sound ! hahahaha .... whatever u want to call them .. it's all good ! :D

  • they are called crappie but you pronounce them croppie craupee dumbass

  • i like crappie and have fun with it ! croppie sounds too southern for me ... kind of like crawdad, as opposed to crayfish ... but to call me names ? THAT is pretty dumbass !

  • and oh yeah ... and that was a CRAPPIE thing to say ... it's a matter of personal preference ... big deal !

  • lol dude u are a nutt....i like ya..

  • ha ha ha ... i've been called worse ! >:P ... this was my first one ... u just ain't seen nutty yet ! as i get more comfortable with this whole camera thang ... all hell's gonna bust lose ! of course, while trying to get out some good info ! thanx bro !

  • u set the hook too hard tri to put a tap when u set the hook : )

  • i know ... i know ... i know !!! : ) ... as i have explained before, growing up a bass fisherman .... old habits die real hard ! i am working on it ! >:P

  • hey thereaper75 its not a bad thing to use live bait we fish to catch fish an live bait does a pretty dam good job

  • In 5:14, I could have filled a boatload in that time, with little effort. I prefer to use dynamite, just scoop em' into the boat when the float on top. lol

  • quite effective ... yet not so sure how the game and fish dept. would look at that !? doesn't that take a little bit of the fun out of it ... the challenge !?

more power to ya ! :D

  • Unfortunately up here in Portland, no nearby decent crappie fishing, enjoy watching yours.

Perhaps get the wife or girlfriend up early to bait the hooks and film your catching lots mo' fish. You got me hooked!!!

  • i will do one in october on the james river with the BIG slabs ... average over a pound and a half !!! will do one for bass fishing on james river soon, and also one on big blue cats. lots of fish on my bluegill vids ! the morn of this vid was tough by myself ... even harder to break away from fishing to freakin film ! i might do another pond crappie vid this summer and try to get LOTS of fish in there for ya ! thanx 4 watchin !!!

  • Crappie fishing with minnows and bobbers?!?! Amateur. LOL. Real men don't use live bait to fish crappie. Learn to jig, man! Minnows is CHEATIN'

  • well ... i do use jigs ... all the time ! wanted to put the info out there to help people catch fish who are interested in the sport. minnows are great on those tough days for the big slabs. you are right ... it is the easiest and best way ! puts some good food on the table also for those not as talented with hook sets on jigs ... like families or kids ! ... and if it is within game and fish guidelines ... it ain't cheatin !!! LMAO :D

  • ... besides, some days you can throw 10 different colors and types of jigs and they won't touch it .. but they will still eat a minnow ! i prefer to CATCH fish when i am out ... whichever method works best to accomplish that goal ... i am down ! i'll pick up a fly rod if i have to .... whatever works !!!

fishing is almost always fun when you are catching fish JIG REAPER ! :)

  • haha dude were u trying to rip the poor fishes lip..haha nice vid though.

  • .... and it HAS happened .... really ! hahahaha :D

  • Excellent video! Good info on the rig!

  • thanks ! i assume you saw the "bobber rig" vid as well. Doing one soon on largemouth bass and big blue cats. I will detail the rigs there as well ... tight lines !

  • You are pronouncing Crappie wrong. It is not "Crap E" it is more pronounced "cra p" with the a in "cra Is short.

  • u say tomoto ... i say tomato .... as i said in a prior response ... Winkleman calls the crOppie, but Lindner calls them crAppie .... who's right ? i don't think either is wrong ... just your own preference. crappie etiquette ... gotta love it !? do you say crayfish or crawfish ? what is most important is the love of the sport and tight lines to all !!!

  • well he actually he is pronouncing correct you must be from the south like me because i say it the same way lol... were the ones saying it wrong actually lol

  • that is too funny ! makes me think of the pronunciation of bream ... how the hell do you get "brim" out of that !? i started calling them "brim" sometimes, too because here in Richmond, VA nobody would know what the hell I am talking about if I called it a "bream" ... as spelled !

  • you dont gotta set the hook so damn hard lol.

  • lol he almost killed it haha

  • i know ... i know ... i know guys !!! lmao .... :D .... old habits die hard growing up a bass fisherman ... as i have explained many times before, I am working on it ! hahahaha :P

  • haha im just messin with you lol

  • I have noticed a big spike in views from all those recreational fishermen out there gearing up for the new season. The unfortunate part is ... you're too late ! It is well into post spawn now, but that doesn't mean you still can't catch em with these methods ! Dawn will be the peak bite now thru summer. Fish will be shallow in the morning and low light and deep when it gets hot. Good luck ! and ps. ..... look for cover with good shade and depth for those big slabs !

  • It depends on where you are. The further north you are, the later the spawn. Here in southern Idaho, the crappie are just entering the pre-spawning period. North Washington crappie don't enter the spawn until late May.

  • very true ! i tend to look at things from a local perspective. in virginia, we are kind of middle of the road climate wise. lucky u ... tear em up ! thanx 4 the info ! crappie fishing can still be great year round ... but spawn is def a special time ... good luck !

  • dang what a hookset. lol nice. people say that since their mouths are like paper you should just barely set the hook, but if u yank it u drive it up the top of its mouth.

  • EXACTLY ! 95% of my hook sets are in the top, tough part of their mouth (right between the eyes !) .. but not in em LOL ! ... and they normally don't come off either. But def something to be said for a quick snap of the wrist ... i'm working on it ! Thanks !

  • and hell ... sometimes on a long cast, you need to get all that wind blown slack out of the line !

  • no no no no dont take that the wrong way i was congradulating you. im 13 not trying to start trouble

  • nope ... didn't take wrong way ... just elaborating !!! it's all good you troublemaker !!! :P ... just kidding !

  • Damn.... Way to set the hook.LOL

  • no doubt ! i get a lot of razzin from that ! grew up bass fishing and the old habits die hard ! they do tend to stay hooked, tho ! >:)

  • just did a little crappie fighing here in brownlee, idaha. didnt do as good as i wanted but thats part of fishin!!

  • yeah, sometimes a sharp change in weather, a bad moon and many other things can make fishing slow. with crappie, i find if u fish a spot for more than 15 minutes without a bite, move on. make sure to cover the entire water column to find where they are. u can do this by fishing different depths on the bobbers. fish one deep and another around 3'. then while they are out, throw a couple different color jigs and bring them thru the entire water column, both slow and quick.

  • once u find a pattern that works, duplicate. finding where they are is most of the battle, but on some days it doesn't matter what u do. the way i see it, is at least i want to do ALL i can do ! hope this helps u catch more next time !

  • thank you for the advice this wednesday im heading to owyhee lake. try to catch some black crappie or some small mouth bass. fish on

  • say .... damn typos !

  • ... and the "have a crappie day" was NOT directed at you ! it was a whimsical reference is sat to people in FUN !!! ... and Winkleman calls the crOppie, but Lindner calls them crAppie .... wh's right ? crappie etiquette ... gotta love it !?

  • cro-py not crap-ie.lol nice vid thou.

  • u say pototo ... i say potato .... i do like telling people to have crappie day ... and mean it !

  • geese man, someone was bound to say it. im not trying to throw your video in the bag, and i even said nice video. c'mon man you cant get that butt heart over it.

  • butt heart ? i was lighthearted and having fun with the comment ... just a preference or pronunciation thing ... no big deal at all ... wasn't sweatin it !

  • well lol or haha would have helped, comment miss understood. shit happens.lol

  • damn, we should call you rippn'lipps, lol, that hook setting had to hurt, l0l, 5/5 though

  • funny true story ... I once set the hook and brought in nothing ... but a set of fish lips !!! I am TRYING ... I just get so excited .... and when it ain't broke ... I don't fix it ! I do need to ease up a little .. no doubt !!! : )

  • lol, yea, i know man, i get very excited also, haha, i go fishing everyday at about 6:00 in the morning, summer of course, lol, got a huge pong right behind my house, crappie are going crazy right now too, haven't caught a bluegill yet... love the vids!

  • That was big hook set for a crappie with those paper thin mouths!

  • no doubt ! grew up a bass fisherman and some habits die hard ... i do a lot better when sitting in the boat !

  • I do land about 95% of hits. most of my hook sets are in the top of the mouth, rather than the paper thin sides. I don't think it matters as much as some people think. Today I lost a bout 5 ... and caught 100 ! but you are right ... a flick of the wrist is usually all it takes ! cheers !
