You don't need to put the clutch in to start a car. You can start in gear ...this is how you drive a car with a blown clutch. But the car will take off as happened here.

What?? Nothing to do with diesel. Most older cars (manuals) didn't have clutch depress sensor and you could start the motor with the car in gear, no clutch. I towed out a girl who did this in a FWD 1992 Audi, her friend turned it on and jumped a parking curb into mud.

With the older cars, when you battery is dead, you can start the car with putting it in 2nd gear and push it, then try to turn it on
it seems like you don't know the difference between an automatic and manual. in north america most of the people don't know how to drive a manual. no manual requires clutch depressed to start the engine. you depress the clutch to ease up the torque on the flywhell when cranking, especially when the engine is cold. the clutch should be released after the engine starts, so that the gearbox starts lubricating asap.
