I was reading through the discussions. A lot of dissention (genius vs idiot, showman vs clown, etc.).
He was brilliant in several ways: he had charisma, unbelievable energy, and probably the best sense of humor of all time. Underneath the funny entertainer, though, he was a painfully lonely man who desperately wanted to see people enjoy themselves. He self-medicated and constantly derailed, despite all his many friends who really cared about him, and he married way too young.
He obviously had some anger issues; he treated Kim abominably, but learned his lesson; he never laid a hand on Annette. But something inside guaranteed he would never really clean up his act. You don't take nearly 40 heminevrin tablets in one night if you really want to go straight. He was irresponsible, he was impulsive, and he was attention-starved. No matter how far he went, he always had to go farther. He aimed for the stars and torpedoed into the ground.
He was a victim of his own excesses, but somehow, nearly everyone in the entertainment business felt a vast, empty hole in their lives at the news of his death. If your life is that of an imbecile and a screw-up, your demise doesn't have the impact his had. He was special, but he was humble enough not to believe it, hence his life-long over-the-top, pompousbehavior. He would give you his last $100 if he thought you needed it, and not many folks would do that.
People like this are pathetic individuals. It's sad to think that their "antics" (read drug abuse, etc) get them into trouble. The truth is that his erratic, crazy life caught up with him. Hopefully he will rest in peac.
@TheMenghi1 I don't see it that way. These are not pathetic inividuals. Keith Moon and his partner in crime Harry Nilsson were great friends, with enormous talent. Both men couldn't deal with success very well, so they turned to the bottle, and hard drugs. The problem today in music, is there are no risk takers. It's all contrived PR BS. Moon was just doing what Charlie Parker did twenty-five years prior. These die young musicians sold their souls for entertainment.
@strangeones4 -I guess we have different moral values. I don't personally believe you have a right to destroy your body. Yes, the law permits it to a certain point -- it doesn't make illegal destructive behavior--,but reasonable people know better than to put their lives needlessly at risk. What Moon, Charlie Parker and others did was not calculated. It's called reckless abandonment.
@TheMenghi1 So why are you even replying to this video, unless you are out to preach? You know Keith Moon died from an overdose of a drug that was supposed to curb his alcoholism (at least you do now). Keith Moon didn't think his overdose of Heminevrin was going to kill him. Maybe these people you write about had undiagnosed behaviors that were mis-understood, or untreatable 40-60 years ago. They were self destructive by choice because bi-polar, or schizoprhenia was new then.
@strangeones4 -. As a teenager, I enjoyed Keith's role in The Boys are Alright, but I've grown up since. Yes, he was a reckless person, just like John Entwisle (overdose from cocaine?) . However, I repeat, their behavior was reckless. Being famous and talented doesn't excuse one from stupidity , from living sensibly and morally. I am sorry to disturb your sensibilites, nor do I wish to offend them but rather make my case about these kind of people. Peace
@TheMenghi1 So which Church of hypocrisy do you represent? Are they stupid? They were talented enough to make money most of us will never see, even in 1970's dollars/pounds. BTW it's "The Kids Are Alright", phony. I'm more disturbed by your silliness. Actually I'm really pissed off that the Phillies couldn't beat the SF Giants in the NLCS. Goodbye silly person.
@strangeones4 --I guess agreeing to disagree isn't in your deck of cards. What is "silly" about criticizing destructive behavior? Making "more money most of us will never see" doesn't mean you do destructive things. BYW, do you need money to overdose on drugs, drink excessive alcohol? Seems like my Church is smart enough to know that destructive behavior is destructive regardless of one's economic status, right? Good bye irrascible one.
@TheMenghi1 what woulkd you know about it you pompas ass..get off your high and might pedastal...live the life for a while before you judge, open eyes, instead of mouth
@whokeithmoon --The closest thing to being a "pompas" ass is that I come from the land of the Pampas. I simply made a statement about his life as being pathetic. It is not tragic because you have to be great and have a fall for it to be a tradegy, like in the Oedipus Rex. I remarked that I wish he rests in peace. I don't wish the man any evil but do feel that he made some very bad choices in peace. Lastly , I wouldn't want to "live the life," if you're refferring to drug abuse. Peace
What does this have to do with "moral values"? Where were you when the "Rat Pack" drank themselves into oblivion almost every night in Las Vegas during the late 50's/early 60's?? Since you're the new savior of souls, where were you back then? Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, and Frank Sinatra could've lived till they were 95 years old. So sorry you missed it!! "Reckless abandonment"!?!?! It's called mental illness.
@strangeones4 --I thought you had had enough of me!? I don' twish to upset anyone. I simply state that the lack of moral values leads people to do dumb things. It is really inconceivable to you that there are people who really believe this? Lastly, your logic doesn't follow. Just because one is able to do something doesn't mean it's good or bad. It has to be examined. Martino and Sinatra, both lived lives of reckless abandonment. Being a drunk is a good thing? How so?
@TheMenghi1 Haven't you figured it out YET!?!? I don't like people who are judgemental, you seem to enjoy it. I don't believe in your black, or white world. There's a lot of grey, and if you pass judgement on the grey with a knee-jerk reaction, you're the one who is ignorant. Where did "Martino" come from? That singer/actor from "The Godfather"?? Yet you ignore Peter Lawford, and the Kennedys. Phony!
@strangeones4 --. His parents were from Italy. Martin(o) didn't speak English until he started attending elementary school. Lawford nor Kennedy-- you never mentioned them, so why comment.? Judgemental is a very convenient word when one doesn't want to confront the facts. You can't deny that their drinking did them in, right? How is that cool, smart or what have you? That's all I'm saying. I can't believe you'd get so upset. Have a gogood one.
@TheMenghi1 Those entertainers/muscians who drank/shot/snorted themselves to death during the 1930's-1990's sacrificed their lives. They will be celebrated, admired, and remembered much longer than the wheat cracker clean living non-talent that's existed for at least fifteen years in the "pop" music world.
@strangeones4 --I don't deny that they're be part of our pop culture for years to come. Moon was not a musical genius but a clown. Jaco Pastorius, for example, innovated the electric bass, but also died needlessly due to his insane manner of living. However, I think of someone like Johann Bach who was a much more gifted genius who lived soberly. I don't admire wreckless behavior. Regards.
If you say 'Moon was not a musical genius but a clown', can you play the drums better then Keith did in The Kids Are Alright, Young Man's Blues or anything he played in the Woodstock Fes??
I have played with lots of drummers and as far as I know, anyone who have experienced in playing the drums never despise Sir Keith Moon, except for those who only know about his drumming in the late 1970s.
j ai l'album de 75, de keith!! je le cherchais depuis tant d'années... i love keith et 'les who'!! inoubliable!! merci de défendre this guy!!!! arnaud

We know Keith was an idiot but what a great human being he was, gifted in his drumming but his greatest gift was his sense of humour and his showmanship. Greatest rock 'n' roll drummer of all time, I salute u Keith old chum may Gawd have mercy on you ;)

Aww...Keith is the most inspirational to me...along with two other drummers, but Keith will always be the best...ever...and we love you forever Keith!!! R.I.P!!! <333333

Kieth you are the greatest to walk this earth. I was looking for music from your solo album and i said wow i heard he sings it must be bad, but you are freaking great. R.I.P. Kieth Moon. Forever in Our Hearts and Minds. I wish I wrote this song, its amazing. -Mike

hi moonie... i was just an 1 year old boy when you left us.. I appreciated you since the first listening of who's next album... now you are my hero.. wherever you are i'm sure you are still joking and drumming hard with john near you
I like Keith's version better than The Beatle's. Keith's version seems more sincere than the "up-beat" Beatle version. No offense to The Beatles though, it was their song.
People like Keith moon come only once in a lifetime. you can argue forever who was a better drummer but the truth is that keith was a real force of nature and his personality makes him second to none
Rock on Keith
Wherever you are...i'm sure you make it a better place to be.
His head was screwed from the accident he was involved in, which took place in Hatfield when he ran over and killed his Friend/PA. He took the medication, the pills, the booze to deal with it. He was a weak character in the first place so it was a bad mix. Such a shame but WHAT a legacy he left behind eh ?!
wow...he does it better than The Beatles....better than anyone for that matter...wow....absolutely great. Keith was the best drummer who will ever live.
Gotta appreciate one thing about Moonie. He always had a smile on his face or he was trying to make people laugh or smile. Then he was one awesome drummer. RIP
bugger off mate..keith lived more in one day than you will live in a lifetime. yes, he had an alcohol problem..but so did/do many many other artists, it comes with the territory. keith is worth a milliom times the plastic tossers that occupy the modern music scene.
The critics can fuck themselves. This is AWESOME. I wish Keith had lived so we could have experienced more great music of his....Rest in peace, Keith.
Even that some people say Two sides of the moon was garbage I actually think its pretty good and even that I hear that Keith can't sing well his voice isn't really that bad and he makes this song sound sad and yes touching, I don't mean by sad in a bad way. Love the video BTW, I wish Keith was still alive he was such a great guy. I like this cover very much but it makes me feel upset when I hear it so thats a known fact that he can sing. RIP Keith Moon we love you!

Further to last post am not sure if it makes me cry cos in some ways it's funny or in another way you can see him destroying himself!
Anyway he died because he was a an alcoholic and blaming the medication is futile- be real!
Know I will get bad response to this - but I know as I'm an alcoholic too!!!

This video was so sad. It's a shame that the pills that were supposed to save his life are what killed him. He'll always be my hero. R.I. P. Moonie

People like Keith moon come only once in a lifetime. you can argue forever who was a better drummer but the truth is that keith was a real force of nature and his personality makes him second to none
Rock on Keith
Wherever you are...i'm sure you make it a better place to be.

sucks how he died. fucking medication to control his alcoholism killed him.
eculewatt 3 years ago 3
His head was screwed from the accident he was involved in, which took place in Hatfield when he ran over and killed his Friend/PA. He took the medication, the pills, the booze to deal with it. He was a weak character in the first place so it was a bad mix. Such a shame but WHAT a legacy he left behind eh ?!

Keith Moone is a legend. for a coked up, alcoholic, pill-popping, scraggy voiced drummer, he sang that song better than Paul or John.

Moon was the best drummer of the last century if not ever.. a perfect example of sex, drugs & rock'nroll. rock on!

bugger off mate..keith lived more in one day than you will live in a lifetime. yes, he had an alcohol problem..but so did/do many many other artists, it comes with the territory. keith is worth a milliom times the plastic tossers that occupy the modern music scene.
Brilliant tribute by the way..whoever you are.

Keith Moon Rocks!!!!!!! what a hero!!
ItalianStallion153 4 years ago
Even that some people say Two sides of the moon was garbage I actually think its pretty good and even that I hear that Keith can't sing well his voice isn't really that bad and he makes this song sound sad and yes touching, I don't mean by sad in a bad way. Love the video BTW, I wish Keith was still alive he was such a great guy. I like this cover very much but it makes me feel upset when I hear it so thats a known fact that he can sing. RIP Keith Moon we love you!
