@Pee My Sources Are Telling ME That It's Still In The Works, But THE ROCK Is Still Leading Contender For The Lead Role (Kamehameha I). Which I Don't Mind Because He's Part Polynesian And Has The Physical Stature And Presence Of A Kamehameha I Type. Plus He Can Act Well And Draw A Large Movie Going Audience. So, Yeah, Hopefully They Complete It Soon.
Come on NZ Film Commision! We need more Films esp features and full length shows concerning Early Maori war films and or Polynesian history filcks.Try making a film about HongiHika,The Boyd maccacre and similar stuff!
why are obese Maori actors used in movie's? they look gross and don't do the real warriors back in the day justice :( The real deal Maori were fit and healthy s'pose there's not to many like that nowadays aye????lol.....i'm sure the casting crew could borrow them from rugby teams haha! now that would be mean Maori mean :)
@castronic123 What? Was your tribes boats the inflatable ones or something?? Waka were quite heavy to be carried on shoulders, that's if you're talking about the REAL waka made from kauri etc. Just saying.
Where the rest of the world can get this film from? I would like to watch the whole film...this movie really got me, it´s very exciting, i loved it. Please tell me how can I get it. Greetings from Venezuela!! Thanks.

@hazza yes a horror movie indeed and true story. The maoris ate almost 70 people there. They took full scale utu over a whipping of a chief on board and then ate them all except a few
Aotearoa neesds more pre-colonial films. How about a film about the Musket wars or the Boyd incident or the the Chathams genocide?Anyways kapai and kia ora to Taua
@BlueZuluFoxtrot lol different perspective but it's exactly what our ancestors used to do to save time and making too much noise treading through enemy territory.
how could they be slaves? the Rangatira at the end were looking for morale support from them? maybe they didnt like their leader as has is not helping them?,Very tipical of todays GOVT in NZ
I'm looking for the TV series Makatu (2002-2005), a thriller/ drama based on the Maori legends and referred to as a Maori style Twilight Zone. Can't find it on amazon and the NZ sites don't seem to offer any copies suitable for DVD regions other than NZ's. Would be great if someone could make a torrent file for it. Please PM me if you have any suggestions to find Mataku. Cheers.
@xbcoupe1 They don't look like slaves, they were exhausted tribesmen after lugging the waka through the bush. They never had slaves (unless they were bound up and taken as POW's like that "enemy leader" they had tied up at the bow) on their war expeditions who would help them carry a war canoe?! Think about it.
Yepp sthg like that. That ruthless leader might havn't thought about it, that draging a heavy boat through the jungle might be easy to track, and it is very slow. On the other hand the enemy group can move fast on the war path in their own territory.
I wouldn't fight either for such a chief.
However still cool movie. I wish more film would be maden about the myths and stories of the native people of the world.
@Attilahollo9 If you're still interested, the Maori ancestors would lug waka taua (war canoes) through the bush to avoid the enemy seeing them on the ocean and alerting their tribe to prepare for battle. They would carry the waka taua inland to rivers/streams as a faster means of transport to get closer to enemy territory as most tribes resided nearest a water source and they would attack whilst the enemy were off-guard but in this short film, they were instead. That's all there is to it.

Why were they pulling a boat in the middle of the jungle in enemy territory?
Attilahollo9 1 year ago
@Attilahollo9 It took me a while to figure it out but i think ive got it.
These guys captured that guy and are going to the river on the other side to their land.
The enemy was waiting on the river the way they came so they're going through the bush.
The Warriors got tired and couldn't fight back in the end.
