I was there from 1987-1990. I lived in Coranoso Point base housing right up the hill from the Windward ferry landing..you take a right at the top of that hill, then go about 1/4 mile or so and take another right like you were going up the hill- my house was the first house on the left at that corner. Nice video brings back a lot of memories!!!
Loved it. I was also there in the mid 90s, just after i graduated high school. For three months i had nothing to do but stay in the ocean and stay drunk on the Phil-Am Pier. :p. The coral reefs there are glorious. I remember a well known iguana there named "Chopper", he was a beast. And the Banana Rats were a trip as well. Man i sure miss those sunsets, as the ferry would travel back and fourth. Thanks for sharing. =)
Enjoyed vidio, thanks brought back bitter sweet memories 1961-1963 when I stood guard on fence line, gate duty and A.U.W. posts then on our days off set in mine fields. Lost a good friend' tripped his own mine off. At least he has a chance of a ressurection to paradise earth.
I was stationed there in 1968-1969. We didn't have those barracks when I was there. Our's were on the hill behind the Barrel Club (if thats still there). And we SURE DIDN'T HAVE McDONALDS. And when I was first there, we still had to wear Dress Whites. I worked in the BOAT SHED. Is there still a Tin Can tied to buoy 18?
wow good video, was stationed there 1975-76 base police. such a baeutiful place to live for a year. partying, scuba diving, fishing, building barrel boats, could not of had more fun. drove around on an old motorcycle and still have the licence plate.if any of the old gang are around contact me at dave gowland@clear.net. i would go back there in a heart beat! love to show the family think they would love it too!
Thanks for making this video. A definite delight for those of us who spent time there. Some of my fondest memories of childhood are from GTMO, truly an amazing experience. The one duty station I would love to revisit !
Memories. As a little boy I lived with my family in Guantanamo (Ciudad) and I was in kindergarten at the Sarah Asher School. The headmistress was a wonderful American lady we all knew as Miss Clancy. She arranged with Chaplain McPhee to stay at the base during the last months of the Cuban Revolution. I remember my eldest sister Emma and stayed at the house of the Admiral of the Fleet, whose name I can't remember. They looked after us very well, everybody was so kind and friendly. Thank you.
Born in Guantanamo, Cuba, Oriente, and moved to the base when Castro declared himself to be a bastard, communist! Lived there up to 1972. What can I say about the "Rock?" Heave on earth! I wish everybody can experience the beauty of Cuba, especially the most incredible scenery off of Kittery Beach, underwater! Live in Center Bargo, 1182. W.T. Sampson Pirate for life! Hello lost friends, wherever you are! God Bless! Wish there was a way to go back!
Operation Sea Signal 94' . Now that was a wild time .All dependents left the base.
Riots sometimes in the camps, refugees making knives out of soda cans . Refugees making sculptures out of melted mre bags . Haitians thinking I was going to shock them when I tried to hook them up to the ekg machine , marines telling the cubans they had to kill their grandmothers to become a marine ........
Awesome! I grew up on the base, from age 4 to 9 then 14 to 19. No traffic light, no MacDonald's back then, but we had horses to ride (not there anymore). It's the most amazing place to spend your childhood, and it makes me so sad that people now associate it with that terrorist camp. My memories are wonderful. The natural beauty and the wonderful weather...I would love to go home again...there's nothing like a ripe mango right off the tree. *sigh*
Wow I'm from Cuba, Never been to Guantanamo before, but Cuba is beautiful all the way, and anywhere you go in Cuba you are going to fall in love with. Cuba is awesome. Cuba ROCKS!!!
Thank you. That was beautiful. So many memories, but we didn't have the McDonald's when I was there. Definitely remember the one stoplight on Sherman Ave, the beautiful land, riding my horse through the tank trails, iguanas, banana rats - lol. and all of the beautiful military men and women. I loved it there :)
I was stationed there from '95-'96 during the refugee crisis and have very fond memories of this place. I am hoping one day to take my family and swim with the barracuda again.
GREAT video!! My husband and I were stationed there from 87-90 (we met there in 1987!!) and again from 92-94 - our oldest daughter was born there, and both of our daughter's and I were on the last evacuation plane out in '94 (anyone remember the t-shirts "will the last american refugee leaving Guantanamo Bay please turn out the lights?") We LOVED that place, and would go back in a heartbeat!
@mkfutrediq I was born here in 91 too and still visit for vaca...This place has changed a lot tho..its finally green and we have astro turf at Cooper Field now.
@mkfutrediq I remember that shirt. That is funny. I was there from 93-95 and worked at the airfield on the leeward side so I probably helped to load your bags. It was sad to see all the families go. I was single at the time and would love to go with for a tour with my wife and kids. What memories.
Guantanamo bay is the only one cuban territory who really have freedom, god let some day my country cuba have the same freedom, we must leave our own country finding the freedom, thanks to all american people for accept cubans in their territory. god bless america.
Great video! I was stationed there from '83-'85. The people nowadays only think of GTMO as a prison camp. Some of the best days of my life were on the rock. Met my first wife there, eating jamaican beef pies and baskin-robbins ice cream at The Stop Light. Rode my dirt bike all over that base on the tank trails.
Thank you for this, My father was stationed there 82-85. I remember it, but I was so little. Its nice to see this and remember some of what was there. Although, to be honest, I wish we had that McDonald's when we were there! I remember only getting it when we went to PR to the dentist! It was really a beautiful place.
I was stationed there from 81 to 83 and again the pics brought back a lot of memories. I had just posted a bunch of pics on Facebook and a friend did the same thing with those pics and posted the video here on You Tube. check it out also "GTMO 1981". With your permission I would like to put a link to your video on my Facebook site. tks
