It amazes me how on EVERY expert village video almost all the comments completely trash them, yet they STILL make videos...wtf? Expert Village, you suck, please do us a favor and stop the useless information
All these expert village videos about how to do something the best when it comes to playing/performing music are around a minute and a half long... Does anybody honestly think they can become an expert with a minute long video of pure stupidity?
What the heck? First off, he acts like it's going to suck if you're not as close as possible to the speaker. NOT TRUE! And the thing about recording/mic'ing techniques is that there is not necessarily a better or worse. There's really just, "different." Really depends on the sound you're trying to achieve. What works for one amp/style may very well not work for another.
There are so many factors into finding the tone you want through your micing technique. On axis or askew, how far from the amp, what mic to use, etc. SM58s btw sound great for guitar cabs especially for power trio's where the guitar carries more mids. I hope nobody looking for their tone is fooled by this "expert" and employs more technique than "edge or center" Sennheiser 609s and 906s also sound great.

I prefer the midle of the speaker. You know- 1/2 inch from the edge of the cab.
I also get a really fat sound by placing one mic pointed at the handle, at a slight angle. And another one on the logo. Then I just run a direct out and use that instead.
Now someone correct me if I'm wrong but, the SM57 has a broader frequency range, and that's more preferable for instruments. The cone of the speaker pushes the high end of the tone and the edge rest of the speaker pushes the lower end, which is why bigger speakers sound deeper, there is more low frequency around the high frequency.
Incase someone wanted to know a little something about micing an amp.
Well, when I think of the "best guitar tone", I think a little deeper than a 57 on a L6 amp. Plus, he said he's going DI. WTF??? I've never seen a decent Expert Village video. I don't know what classifies them to be an "expert."

Exper Village SUCKS!
miktas1994 2 years ago 6
the reason why 57 is better than the 58 is because 57 goes 10Hz deeper than the 58.. there you have it..

This guy has no business telling anyone anything about tone... direct out! what a fuck stick approach.

Yeah. Like a Schecter through a few good Marshall stacks.
Or a Les Paul With a wall of Peavey stacks behind it.
