73 years is not very long age to live to when your a Tai Chi Master....i would have thought 100 years at least as it is supposed to give your longetivity...
Tai Chi Chuan is a highly effective, highly powerful martial art. In common practice, such as the Chen Manching style, the applications are highly hidden. If you are interested in TCC as a martial art, you will absolutely need to study with a highly trained Sifu who knows fighting application. Then, and only then, will you begin to appreciate the why and how of the Tai Chi form. Are all parts of the TCC practice encapsulated within the Long Form? Yes. The short form? No. Study, study, study!!!!!
The real problem in learning with CMC's approach is not that it contained hidden techniques, but that he allowed the hippy dolts who carried on for him to assume that was true. Plus they were (and are) completely mistaken about proper alignment being mistaken not using muscular force. Very silly, but there it is.
One of my first forays into TCC was with an "authorized" CMC disciple. Based on my martial arts background, I knew right away that he was full of cow chips. Fifteen years later and I'm still appalled by the ignorance of CMC's "disciples." I ended up observing one of these instructors a few months ago. The "master" actually said: "Tai Chi is not a martial art. No one practices the applications. They are complicated." I walked away in disbelief. I was so tempted to invite him to spar.
Nice. Is the second part of master Chen's short form available somewhere? For those of you interested in the subtle nuances and intricate movements of the form, I recommend that you study other styles, in addition to the style of other masters within your own specific form. Explore other forms of Wu Shu (i.e. Shaolin) and you will be amazed at the revelations. You will experience and enlightening moment. Moral: Don't get stuck admiring the tip of only one iceberg ;-)
This goes very quickly. Is it sped up? In the class I am taking, we were told that to go through the short form takes 7 minutes. Or perhaps I misunderstood.
Thank you. Do you know of any footage of him doing the rest of the form? In my class, I am almost up to the point at which this film ends and I found it very helpful to watch the first third as I've been learning it.
There's another video when you search under Chen Man Ching--Chen Man Ching's Yang Form--quality isn't as good but it's the full form (you'll see it's more than 7 minutes).
Ho studiato la 108 molti anni fa, dal maestro muradoff prima e da un suo allievo dopo.... che dire è stata la mia prima forma di tai chi chuan. grazie
Excellent presentation of the first part of Cheng's Yang style 37 posture form by Master Cheng himself.
