Yeah that's how it's played. You play in the space between two frets, and the fret closer to the body is the one that the string is touching, changing the pitch.
Hey I'm a drummer/percussionist and stuff who's kinda moven on to other instruments bcuz I lov music and playen it and wat not but these lessons r a big help and how u would continue just posting these videos on YouTube instead of charging ppl for all of those reasons I totally agree with so thanxs so much and if u want to check out my channel my brand new one is DCdrumer and I'll hopefully get som more covers on there but there's also som on this profile but keep up the good work!!!
So I was wondering....would it be better to shift up and down the neck, or could I do string crossings to keep my left hand from moving all over the place? It seems instead of playing the 5th fret on the E string, followed by the 3rd fret on the A string; just to play the open A then B# (3rd fret on A) would be easier. Is it in the difference of sound between the two ways of playing. I've played upright bass for about a year now and just purchased an electric bass so was just wondering.
gotta say i appreciate what your are doing for the beginners like myself. i am a quick learner and i am actually picking it up pretty easily with the way your videos are. Thank You!
question: I'm not getting the same sound that you have on the video I have an electronic tuner and I tuned it to the correct keys but the sound is not like the video ever time I do Fret 3,5,8,10 it sounds the same ? What's wrong with my bass. By the way I just got it today.
@ironfistgal Is it definatley tuned right? It should sound the same. Obviously the tone will sound different as they are different basses, through different amps. Could it be that?
@ironfistgal You may have the octave wrong. Make sure you're strings are not too tight or too loose. Also be sure to check your Volume, Tone, and Mid-Range knobs so that you can get a better tone out of your bass.
In the genre that I wish to play with in the future, the vast majority of bassists use picks, does that mean I should start out using a pick? Or learn with my fingers first since I am a beginner? thanks
ive just got a bass 2day ive never played a guitar in my life im a complete beginner im gonna try learn from your vids i let ya kno how i get on!!! btw thanks for takin the time to make these videos dude!!
@ClearNuke You could try practicing by sliding - like if you're having trouble with the 3rd fret to 8th fret move, fret at the 3rd and then slide to the 8th, then slide back to the 3rd, then back to the 8th... basically sliding back and forth between them, keeping your finger held down so you can hear that you're landing on the right note too.
It's basically all a hand movement, and you need to get comfortable moving the right distance. Then you can try going faster or without sliding!
Great stuff, man. Though I've played guitar for years, I'm just picking up a bass for the first time at 40 and really appreciate your informal tutorial style. Thanks for taking the time to do this, and I'll be sure to check out the site as well.
On my fret board I took small pieces of paper and taped them on the top (so visible when looking at the top of the neck) of the fret board "neck" (I guess that's what it's called) so I'll know which fret I'm on. Do you think that's okay to do since I'm learning?
I’m a beginner alright. I just bought a bass and I’m trying to learn the basics from the internet. Every single video I watch when it comes to the left hand, it shows that I have to keep the thumb flat behind the neck and stretch all four fingers in a fret. And this is very difficult. Is this compulsory or is your way better for a beginner?
@ellinas133 Yea, this is the best way of doing things. The thumb acts as a 'pivot' in a way, and thats where the strength from the fingers come from. Don't panic though. You have to build up that strength. Have a look at my video "Hand and tendon exercises". They will help :)
yea.....this hasn't helped at all, maybe i'm just stupid or something cause everybody seems to understand this lesson. I however, do not. i know what you mean but i can't get this down at all. Part 1 was good but you lost me here
awesome, cheers for the tut! Really helpful! I'm learning from an iPhone atm as I'm waiting to get an actual bass! Still works very well though even if using an iphone is very different from using an actual guitar!
I'm switching over from the drums, so I took my old bass (which I never really used) out of storage. Your video seemed to be the easiest one to follow, so I'm hoping I'll get the basics down soon! And you're right---my wrists are sore from only 20 minutes of doing this, lol! Kinda odd, but I guess there are different muscles being used, huh?
thanks alot i just got base and felt kinda stupid not really knowing what to do until i found this easy tutorial and that rift is nice and easy to practice but im having trouble learning the frets is there an easy tecnique to it?

@ladyekna Hiya! I teach and have taught looaddssss of girls how to play bass, and if I'm 100% honest I believe they pick it up quicker than men, because girls seem to naturally have better timing. You'll be fine! :)
I leanrned how to play bass using ONLY your lessons.I am now in a band. I still use walking. The guys think that it's a baby technique, but i like it simple. Thank you so much dude.
@OrmagodensRoadis Thanks man! I'm getting more and more people coming back to me, saying they used my lessons, and are in bands now. Thats enough payment for me. I feel like my job has been done. Thanks for taking the time to tell me. It means a lot :)
just got an esp today, this is the first lesson iv come to and its helped alot, been practicing now and i already have something to show my friend haha (he's a drummer) thanks alot man
These videos are great! I find the pace excellent, you explain things really well! The only thing is - I have tiny little girl hands and I'm finding myself frustrated a lot! I gave up regular guitar in high school after the same problem, but I'm definitely going to ride this one out - I'm just wondering if other people experience this and get smaller basses? Also, do most left-handed players find it easier to play "leftie"? Should I look into that to make it easier on myself in the long run?
@Scampybean actuallyy i have small chunky hands but i still manage to play it the best I cann.lol. and i tend to play at ther nearest sme note when i playy.lol. so i fell you mann lol btw! im a chick.lol.
Hey man, thanks so much for this video. I sort of threw myself after a friend convinced me to get a second hand bass, and this video has been a great place to start. You've got a great sense of humour too!
hey man i dont have a bass yet but im starting and i rlly cnt afford a teacher cuz its like 200 bucks a month and i dont have a job yet and my parents spoil me enough so if i follow ur videos ill get good right they look very helpful just it looks really complicated
i know it's been said a bunch of times but, thank you soo much. your one the few great teachers on youtube. all the others seem to start out to fas but your perfect, and you've really helped me a lot!
i got my bass yesterday and this accesory pack and i learned how to play this riff but im having trouble with the strap it came with this string but i have 2 strap buttons how do i put it on o.0
thank you D man! awesome, I was starting with my thumb, I now walk, I am going to follow you every step of the way! just got bass and am 32 and at Uni but when i have time I will be following your tutes! great first lesson, was not too hard at all, just keep stuffin up where i rest my thumb, btw that was an awesome tip, rest thumb on pick up, then following string and so forth. Once i get to a month worth of lessons I will totally donate, you can hold me to it!
Thanks for the help man, its making a diffrence, i cant scream and i have all the people and i will be in a Metalcore Band arround Feb. and its calle d Crowned Victoria, and im going to scream, and now play bass bc of you, youve made my career.
Hi! Thanks for the lesson. I'm actually a drummer but I wanna learn the bass so badly! It's much more interesting compared to playing the guitar. Are there any beginner bass guitars that you could recommend? It be awesome if you could help. Thanks! :D
wow dude your so helpful i got my bass today and i was trying to do it my self and it sounded really crap. but then i watched your video and now its really easy and its sounds good too haha
Instead of hitting the A note on the E string wouldn't it also be correct to hit the A string open? I'm not sure if they are in a different octave that is why I am asking.
@turtlemonkey7 Hello, turtle. Yes, they are identical notes. So hitting the 5th fret pn the E, OR hitting the open A string are exactly the same thing. This is also a typical method that we use to tune, when tuning by ear. Hope it helps :)
wow!! thanks a million!! i got my bass for xmas and i really havn't worked on it that much, then i came across ur videos and within about and hour i had improved more than i would within hours of an instructional book or cd!! im not very good at teaching myself stuff like this and u have helped a TON!! thanks soooo much!! this has really helped me!! P.S. im subscribing to u!! THNKS!
Thanks very much. I started out on guitar but, man you know I felt it wasnt for me. I have a instructor that I pay for lesson but, when I get home I focus more on your lesson. I also my your website my home page. I just wanted to let you know that you are appreciated.
Hey man. I'm wanting to get into bass guitar, but I'm a left hander, does that really matter at all?? Also I'm wondering how much a good guitar would cost, nothing fancy, just something that could get me started (with an amp and all the other stuff). Would you be able to help at all?? Thanks
@Spartzi start out with a fender or squire bass and a bass amp make sure its a bass amp too lol when I got mine it was a guitar amp and it blew out after 3 notes.
@Spartzi I've heard a good bass is the Fender Squier Vintage Modified. It's about $300 and all the reviews I've seen/heard about it have been overall positive. Left hander doesn't matter a single ounce; it's not too hard to find a left-handed bass. If you look on Youtube you'll see many videos of people with them.
man i loved that. u put something in, and your like "oh whoops! too far :P" BRITISH PEOPLE RULE! love your accent. whee you from? and, from watching you, i want a bass, and to watch Kitchen Nightmares and Doctor Who. (they pwn)
Should I play close to the fret but not exactly on the fret?

Yeah that's how it's played. You play in the space between two frets, and the fret closer to the body is the one that the string is touching, changing the pitch.

@imnothuman111 You don't HAVE to play chords, but you can if you want. Personally, I love Bass chords. Nice sound.

Scampybean 1 year ago
@Scampybean actuallyy i have small chunky hands but i still manage to play it the best I cann.lol. and i tend to play at ther nearest sme note when i playy.lol. so i fell you mann lol btw! im a chick.lol.

thank you D man! awesome, I was starting with my thumb, I now walk, I am going to follow you every step of the way! just got bass and am 32 and at Uni but when i have time I will be following your tutes! great first lesson, was not too hard at all, just keep stuffin up where i rest my thumb, btw that was an awesome tip, rest thumb on pick up, then following string and so forth. Once i get to a month worth of lessons I will totally donate, you can hold me to it!

Instead of hitting the A note on the E string wouldn't it also be correct to hit the A string open? I'm not sure if they are in a different octave that is why I am asking.
turtlemonkey7 1 year ago
@turtlemonkey7 Hello, turtle. Yes, they are identical notes. So hitting the 5th fret pn the E, OR hitting the open A string are exactly the same thing. This is also a typical method that we use to tune, when tuning by ear. Hope it helps :)

Hey man. I'm wanting to get into bass guitar, but I'm a left hander, does that really matter at all?? Also I'm wondering how much a good guitar would cost, nothing fancy, just something that could get me started (with an amp and all the other stuff). Would you be able to help at all?? Thanks
Spartzi 1 year ago
@Spartzi start out with a fender or squire bass and a bass amp make sure its a bass amp too lol when I got mine it was a guitar amp and it blew out after 3 notes.
generalshermancross 1 year ago
@Spartzi I've heard a good bass is the Fender Squier Vintage Modified. It's about $300 and all the reviews I've seen/heard about it have been overall positive. Left hander doesn't matter a single ounce; it's not too hard to find a left-handed bass. If you look on Youtube you'll see many videos of people with them.
