When I played it I didn't think it was scary at all. The first part doesn't have any enemies. But when I stabbed the first enemy and it came straight back to life, I was like oh shit.
I remember playing this level when I was wee. Scared the FUCKING SHIT out of me, one of the few video games that has accomplished that. (Amnesia, please get out of my dreams.)
<3 Thief series. Deadly Shadows was one of my favorite games, I wish I still had it.
Who voted this where to the scariest game level ever made? I just agree! How can 6 people dislike it? It war really exiting to play it, especially for the first time
My friends and I, when we first played this game, got to the cradle and knew something was up... So we turned off all the lights and turned up the volume... haha. We all screamed like little girls when the banging from the attic started... Anyways, we continued... and when we got to white hall... we shit ourselves lol.
This game is a classic, and the atmosphere in this oldie is better than fear, dead space, and even bioshock (< an epic game). The funny part was, we were afraid of nothing. lol
Ah..haha..haa... have still sooo 'good' memories from this!
Went in there suspecting nothing, had my volume turned low because the sounds freaked me out. Sat on a locked door i had my big troubles with... and go all: "the hell's with my grafic, all flickery?!" in wich moment a puppet hits me from behind.
That hit stops the picking and turns me around, to a fullwindow frontface CLOSE UP mentalzombie greeting me!!! *freaked out*
was way too chicken afterwards to finish that level without cheats.
and i usually laugh at things like this.. but the mental institutionalized zombies are fucking the worst... especially when ur trying to find ur way and you run into wayy to many... ugh.. great story.. but would rather skip this lvl..
I have to do this level again because i accidently saved a new game over my main one. It still scares me and I was really reluctant to enter the Cradle again but I have to complete the game. Why did they put this level in the game anyway? lol
The Cradle is scary but i am 13 and i past it with no holy water or flashes i had nightmares for a month but it is not that bad if there where no zombies it would be mutch bether
gah, I...oh my god...such bad memories--YOU STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE...the 1st time I played this I had nightmares for a month, stoped playing thief completely and when I finally returned I had to play with the sound muted for 1 or 2 times, even today I get scared here, thief got a whole lot darker in this level in particular if you know what I mean.
That was completely weak. Upgrade your PC maybe get a 1gb card since they are under $100 now lol...Also has anyone here played DOOM? Blows this crap out of the water for scary levels.
i remeber this level i had hight adren and walked about after i met the puppets i craped myself in fear cus i couldnt kill them so i ran away but got killed but after i played it a few times i got used 2 it
Best way, in my opinion, to play this level, or any level in Thief to to simply sneak around without harming anything :)
Wouldn't it be awesome if you did and the designers add an extra cut-scene at the end of the level showing the owner of the mansion going ape-shit of his guards because his gold is all gone despite the guards all being on their standard patrols, recalling no break-in whatsoever?
i remember when i first got to this level. It looked pretty freaky, but i wasn't to scared when i saw there were no people. My adrenaline dropped. I just walked around, listening to the blue thing. Then a door opened in front of me, and i nearly crapped my self. i didn't see anything tho, so i turned the corner to see a freakin zombie. i threw a flash bomb, ran away, and hid in a shadow for about 2 minutes. then i proceded to play, and had to stop midway to take a break cause my adren. was so hi
Playing this level with a Hi def Surround sound headset is the scariest shit eva you hear footsteps coming up from behind u Suddenly stop and heavy breathing u turn around and it immideately dissapears I got so shit scared on the outer cradle on the inner cradle those puppet barstards were fucking annoying! didnt die from them but they just make u jump at every corner and the light flashing effect was cool to show they were near
This game is worth having for this level alone. The quality of the others varied quite considerably. The trouble with thief is that on most levels you can quite easily knock everyone conscious and then just get on with stealing stuff, you couldnt do that on this level. I hope thief 4 will be as good as this without the agonising loading times of deadly shadows.
I've played Penumbra and I wouldn't say it's scarier than Thief, mainly because it's so scripted--you can pretty much tell when monsters are going to show up, and they're few and far between
The Cradle is relentlessly scary on the first play-through since you dont' realize there aren't any enemies in the first area, plus trying to creep around the patients in the second area and having them pop up after you blackjack (iirc) them is pretty terrifying
Both do a similarly awesome job on constructing a creepy atmosphere, but I'd probably have to give Thief the edge on that too, just because the visuals and design are tighter so it makes it more immersive
Well its all about taste in scares and opinions. I played thru both penumbra games WITH a friend and we love horror films and always watch them together and nearly laugh at how cheesy they are. And we were like emotional wrecks after penumbra :D I know i know. its about opinion :D But i was just referring to my experience. Penumbra was so scary we couldnt play it half the time. we were so fucking scared :D such fun times. Would u recommend thief as a scary game? or is there just 1 lvl scary?
Well one of the reasons the Cradle works so well is that you aren't really expecting that level of creepiness. The rest of the Thiefs can be scary at times (like Return to the Cathedral in Thief 1), but the main sensations are thrills, for lack of a better word, rather than scares. Though all three are excellent games, so you should play them anyway. :]
i would like to see a contest of people playing this game. im sure it would be like the scary maze game (fact) the little girl was a mistake. it would be better if there was less of her voice if not no voice at all. i just never understand or keep forgetting how this all starts...or how it ends...
Your right they should keep the little girls voice out of it because that just gives you the comfort that there is someone there to not hurt you if they just made the level with just scarey sounds people would take alot longer to get through it.
play penumbra overture or black plague and you dont say that. even the new york times game reviewer had to stop playing it and couldnt review it because it was too scary.
I love the first time you go into where Laurel is at the top of the spire! you hear all the knocking and gets louder! lol, that owned me the first time!
played it at midnight, lights off, i didnt get scared much but one thing is for sure, it had a damn good feeling and the exploration curiosity reached record breaking levels! you dont get that scared but you think you're about to be scared after every corner! damn good level (reminds me of system shock 2 and undying briliant built levels) and one of the best games ever.
I'm on this level and I complete all 'target' without first (find more information about women who attacked you) and last (jump to window...). When I try open door that lead to window, Garret tell 'hm, something tells me that not all target is completed' (not exactly), becouse I'm not complete first target.
You need to go into the past where you had to the Tower where the babies were kept, there is Lauryls Diary too, at the end of that hall there is a podest with a book on it, in this book is the information you need about the woman, the hag. Concise: Go to the past were Lauryls Diary was, on the podest there is the book you need to read for the objective to be complete(in the Baby Tower).
I can remember playing this, i played the game right the way through and clocked it the first time, but the other times i played it i would get up to this level and i dont wana continue it lol!
its just the fact that when your walking around you hear footsteps everywhere. you think there is someone behind you at times but you look around and there is nothing.
Also it seems that they have some reversed voices in the audio track. I wonder if anyone has tried to play it back reversed to see what it says.
HEY FOLKS I NEED HELP! I did everything I needed to do except completing 'find out more about the hag' part in this mission! HOW TO FIND OUT MORE!! I did everything and i cannot jump through that WINDOW because I didn't find out more!!!
Yeah well I know how to walk and use the nightvision eye at the same time apparently not many people know how it makes the game easier and less scary in the cradle
fear was a scary game if you were 12 or you jump a lot, same idea as Doom 3 basically, I think that Call of Cthulhu was pretty mentally scarring. along with the fatal frame series and silent hill
It is scary because of the audio/visual elements. That and the briefing that you hear just before you atart the mission. You would have to play it to understand. At night with all the light off. boo.
I used to always play this game, but for some reason the game broke and I haven't been able to play it. Now that I have a new computer, I should try to load this game up and play this level. If it's as scary as it is said to be, then I should be in for one hell of a time. Besides, even those haunted caves from the first Theif (?) were scary... :(
yes there aren't any enemies for a while but that makes it all the more scary because you're expecting something.
couple that with the fact that garrett is a weakling and you'll be sneaking around everywhere jumping at every sound. (and sure it's just a game and you can load/save but what's the point of playing like that? it's like watching a horror film but constantly saying to yourself it's all sfx.)
When you go to the attic and you hear that beats into the door is f**king creepy. First time when I heard that I took my headphones off. I restarted the level afterwards :).
Oh I remember this level. Tense and creepy atmosphere marvellous sound and remarkable story. What I remember the best about this level is the intrigue and originality in all these tasks you must do to complete this level. I think this is one of the most intresting levels I have ever played. And yeah, one of the scariest too ;)
ha ha this level is the most terrifying thing! the first time i played this my eyes were about an inch from the screen i was so tense! the second time i played the gam i knew exactly what to expect and i was still freaked out. kudos to whoever did the sound on this wow!
I've played so many games in my life (back to the days of Double Dragon, Donkey Kong etc.), played horror games (Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, RE etc.) watched the scariest horror movies....I tell you, the first time I saw this level Shalebridge Cradle, it is the most unexpectedly scariest and creepiest game level I have ever played. Kudos to the guy who made this level its brilliant!
In the first few levels you knew what to expect. Guards chasing you, some monsters, zombies etc. in situations that keep you engaged in constant action, you are aware of your surroundings in that it gives you a false sense of security and you know what to do...and then you come to this level. The introduction is ominous enough, then the menacing facade of the building at the courtyard...for the first 30 minutes there are no enemies whatsoever yet the atmosphere is so creepy it keeps you edgy.
A level without enemies or threats for the first 30 minutes, yet still manages to scare the shit out of the player, if not to scare, but at least to heighten our sense of anxiety into overdrive through atmosphere alone and foreboding history (an orphanage with a murdered girl, later converted into an insane asylum, then abandoned)....thats a notable achievement in itself.
argh...wads worse than forgettin to bring a map of the cradle when i start the mission... -.- amusing i keep losing my way and it was so fricken dark i couldnt even c those frickin zombies... i bumped into them... then we both scream at each other... me to the com though...-.-
it's so much more involving when playing it in-game, keep expecting to have to immediately hide from guards, monsters whatever.. that never appear. It's an epic soundscape that I really thought was the high point in the game (also the haunted pirate ship level)
true, Thief 1 was so damn scary and i mean , you won't feel the same scary experience if u play it now, but back in 99 dam those graphics sound and physic of the game plus the darkness and noises made Thief the dark project a freaking scary game specially in the dam haunted cathedral <_<, and mines dude when i play that i was 14 years old and everytime i played on ruined cities with zombies and haunts around i was like praying to find someone alive.
i havent played thief 1 yet (will probably get it off amazon eventually) but thief 2 had its scary moments as well. thief 2 seriously changed my perspective on gaming, and i felt T3 wasnt up to par with the previous ones.
I agree. When I played Thief 1 I was about the same age and this is the only game (maybe even the only thing ever at all) that has, given me cold shivers, because it just was that scary at the time.
The interaction with environment and the freedom to do as you please, was so new and realistic that i had no problem getting into the game.
I wish they would release a Thief 1 classic with enhanced graphics (more detailed textures, rounder objects, dynamic shadows) but same content
oh yeah dude that would be awesome, a re edition of thief 1 with next gen graphics o_o , playing the cathedral will give u a heart attack hehe, i finally can play thief 3 on my comp and now im playing it atm so ill be in this craddle mission soon :D (havent seen this video yet xD just commenting)
that's the cradle. We don't go there.

The ghost girl , Lauryl asking me to find her " scary " stuffs , which spook me out !
And her zombies friends walking around
And also , i need to enter their Cradles Memory , and avoid the staff
The most scary part is the last one , you need to find window out
I even switch my volume to about 5%
Gamma set super high
I hate this stage , but the game is fun

You need to go into the past where you had to the Tower where the babies were kept, there is Lauryls Diary too, at the end of that hall there is a podest with a book on it, in this book is the information you need about the woman, the hag. Concise: Go to the past were Lauryls Diary was, on the podest there is the book you need to read for the objective to be complete(in the Baby Tower).

no wai in 5.1 this has an unforgettable feeling

its just the fact that when your walking around you hear footsteps everywhere. you think there is someone behind you at times but you look around and there is nothing.
Also it seems that they have some reversed voices in the audio track. I wonder if anyone has tried to play it back reversed to see what it says.

I really hated this level! I was constantly using my mechanical eye to zoom in and see in the dark!
scorch465 3 years ago
What's so scary about this level? I think that the coal mine part in The Metal Age is waaay more scary
elefou 3 years ago
It was. That is until the graphics began to age, the a.i. steadily became outdated and zombie theme became predictable.
Also, wasn't the mine in the 1st game. They reduced the number of undead in the sequel.
heflys20 3 years ago
Yeah well I know how to walk and use the nightvision eye at the same time apparently not many people know how it makes the game easier and less scary in the cradle
ynotdrol2 3 years ago
isn't that the point of this level? to not see shit? its suppost to be fukin dark! this level is the best! good vids.

fear was a scary game if you were 12 or you jump a lot, same idea as Doom 3 basically, I think that Call of Cthulhu was pretty mentally scarring. along with the fatal frame series and silent hill
kamakazespec 3 years ago
Ho com on you want to be scared? play FEAR thats a game that scares you jeje but hey dont get me wrong i to like this game.
Thrandael 3 years ago
It is scary because of the audio/visual elements. That and the briefing that you hear just before you atart the mission. You would have to play it to understand. At night with all the light off. boo.

who the hell voted that the scariest ever level???? nothing happened!

It's strange. The low quality of youtube kinda makes it look like you're in a dream, or should I say nightmare...
... Either that or that you need glasses.

After you play it, it isn't that scary.
But for the first time you really think like some monster jump's out of the shadow and attack you thats fuckin scary.
kipcoreproductions 3 years ago 3
yes there aren't any enemies for a while but that makes it all the more scary because you're expecting something.
couple that with the fact that garrett is a weakling and you'll be sneaking around everywhere jumping at every sound.

I agree completely
scariest level ever.
It still scares the crap outta me, especially at 1:20
brrrr.......
although in previous thief series the atmosphere was pretty scary (bank, lost city,...)
blork74 3 years ago 2
Oh I remember this level. Tense and creepy atmosphere marvellous sound and remarkable story. What I remember the best about this level is the intrigue and originality in all these tasks you must do to complete this level. I think this is one of the most intresting levels I have ever played. And yeah, one of the scariest too ;)
gemexas 4 years ago
ha ha this level is the most terrifying thing! the first time i played this my eyes were about an inch from the screen i was so tense! the second time i played the gam i knew exactly what to expect and i was still freaked out. kudos to whoever did the sound on this wow!
mowithchickens 4 years ago
I've played so many games in my life (back to the days of Double Dragon, Donkey Kong etc.), played horror games (Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, RE etc.) watched the scariest horror movies....I tell you, the first time I saw this level Shalebridge Cradle, it is the most unexpectedly scariest and creepiest game level I have ever played. Kudos to the guy who made this level its brilliant!
JCMac777 4 years ago 2
In the first few levels you knew what to expect. Guards chasing you, some monsters, zombies etc. in situations that keep you engaged in constant action, you are aware of your surroundings in that it gives you a false sense of security and you know what to do...and then you come to this level. The introduction is ominous enough, then the menacing facade of the building at the courtyard...for the first 30 minutes there are no enemies whatsoever yet the atmosphere is so creepy it keeps you edgy.
JCMac777 4 years ago 2
A level without enemies or threats for the first 30 minutes, yet still manages to scare the shit out of the player, if not to scare, but at least to heighten our sense of anxiety into overdrive through atmosphere alone and foreboding history (an orphanage with a murdered girl, later converted into an insane asylum, then abandoned)....thats a notable achievement in itself.
JCMac777 4 years ago 2
Oh i remember this level, scared the bejesus out of me

mmm the thief series are some of the best games ever made. I didn't find thief 3 that scary, although that level was fairly spooky.
wish they would make more thief games!!!

i hear that!
Otacon237 4 years ago
why is this scary to you guys nothing happens
Arobo 4 years ago
its scary because of the atmosphere, OBVIOUSLY
it's so much more involving when playing it in-game, keep expecting to have to immediately hide from guards, monsters whatever.. that never appear. It's an epic soundscape that I really thought was the high point in the game (also the haunted pirate ship level)
xfierusx 4 years ago 2
personally, there were some theif 2 levels that were scarier. and i hear thief 1 was an absolute heart attack.
Otacon237 4 years ago
cool, i'll look into both games through bittorrent or angernet[dot]org
xfierusx 4 years ago
true, Thief 1 was so damn scary and i mean , you won't feel the same scary experience if u play it now, but back in 99 dam those graphics sound and physic of the game plus the darkness and noises made Thief the dark project a freaking scary game specially in the dam haunted cathedral <_<, and mines dude when i play that i was 14 years old and everytime i played on ruined cities with zombies and haunts around i was like praying to find someone alive.
IKurtC 4 years ago
i havent played thief 1 yet (will probably get it off amazon eventually) but thief 2 had its scary moments as well. thief 2 seriously changed my perspective on gaming, and i felt T3 wasnt up to par with the previous ones.
Otacon237 4 years ago
You are SO right! That is EXACTLY what I think! Nice comment!
frEEkomaniac 4 years ago
I agree. When I played Thief 1 I was about the same age and this is the only game (maybe even the only thing ever at all) that has, given me cold shivers, because it just was that scary at the time.
The interaction with environment and the freedom to do as you please, was so new and realistic that i had no problem getting into the game.
I wish they would release a Thief 1 classic with enhanced graphics (more detailed textures, rounder objects, dynamic shadows) but same content
lobuni 4 years ago
oh yeah dude that would be awesome, a re edition of thief 1 with next gen graphics o_o , playing the cathedral will give u a heart attack hehe, i finally can play thief 3 on my comp and now im playing it atm so ill be in this craddle mission soon :D (havent seen this video yet xD just commenting)

There were very scary moments in thief 1 abd 2, but the cradle, was the scariest.
