@coopercrue There's a famous French story called "Renard and Jeante Claude" (I may have the second name wrong) but it was so well loved by the French at the time that the word for fox eventually became Renard

It replaced Latin-descended "goupil" from "vulpus" by euphemism (it is often considered bad luck to call predators by their name in many cultures; for the same reason, the bear is referred to as a honey-eater in Slavic cultures); the word was taken from the Old French Roman de Renart, where Renar(t/d) was an anthropomorphic trickster fox.
