what exactly is the difference between maple and birch? drum wise of course! i have a pdp birch kit and i dont know if coated emperors or clear emperors would sound good. that and coated or clear powerstroke3 on my bass drum as a batter head?
The diff. between maple and birch is in my opinion this:
The maple drum gives you a warmer/darker/softer sound than the birch drums. Yet with great attack. The birch sound has a fantastic attack and gives you a sense of deep warm sound. Almost the same? Well the maple drums gives you a sense of "smoothness" and more sustain. Remember that the birch is different from PDP to Yamaha. When it comes to head I use Evans G2 coated on the toms and G1 clear for the bass drum. All the best.M

Hello again Morten! How did you decide on the power toms vs the standard depth? And what depth toms are you ordering on your maple kit? Those birch Customs sound great and it looks like they are extremely responsive!
Hi :) Sorry that I haven`t answered you before but I have been on holiday. I have had the power toms before and just like the sound that they give. I find the sound from deeper toms rounder and with more "body" to the tone, yet with great attack.
On my new kit I have ordered 10x7, 12x8 and 14x14. this kit is ment for more jazz oriented music. thanx for asking!
Hey! Great playing and of course great sound. Really inspired and made me decide what drums i want,, trully. I always liked the yamaha sound, all the way from Manu Katche, to John JR Robinson...I was wandering...What what be more of an allround drum set or should i say mainstream drumset to use it almost everywhere, a maple absolute or an birch absolute. I really like your sound, but i want to know which wood of those two is more usefull...Thank you for your time and great talent...
I think the bast is too try them out and choose the drums that feel right for you. How ever I know it can bee difficult to try them out in music stores. Personally I enjoy playing maple, but I think I will recommend the Birch custom absolute drums. They are very versatile and great for any music style. Good luck with your choice.
Nice playing, & I love the tone of those drums. I am shopping for a Yamaha kit for home recording mostly jazz/funk stuff. Since you also have a maple custom which model would you recommend for this application?
The kind of drums you choose is a bit personal.I recomend you try them out before buying, if you have the chance.
If not I will recommend the birch custom absolute. How ever if you like a warmer sound you should go for the maple custom absolute or the maple custom.
Absolutely awesome sounding kit and very nice playing Morten. You've convinced me into buying one of these kits. I was looking at purchasing a Mapex kit, but I think I'll pay the extra cash and get Yamaha. Very Kool !
hey "gadd00" im a 15 yearold drummer and ive been playing for 7 years, after watching your video it has inspired me alot, i love your style, and btw how much did ur birch birch customs cost? thanks

(The drums was bought at Mid West Percussion, and I think I payed around 3000USD for it. Just the shell pack)
Well thank you very much! I am trying to order them one peice at a time (10x8, 12x9, 16x16, 18x16, 22x18 x2) but I'm glad to hear that these drums sound amazing! Unfortunatly, I don't have any sort of micing so I would have to go au natural if you will. Thanks!
Wowee man! Those drums sound absolutely beautiful! I'm thinking of upgrading from Rydeens to these, but I must know, do they sound this lovely without mics?
If you use them on stage with a PA set up and add a bit reverb on the snare, it should sound like this. In this video I have also added a very small amount of EQ.
If you upgrade to BCA you will have a great set comp. to the Yamaha Rydeen.
Remember that this is the powersized drums:10x9,12x10 and 14x12.
good stuff. nice fluid movement. i am kinda more a weekend hack player. i have a few things on here just making some noise on my kit. not sure how to network on this thing though. keep up the great work. i enjoy watching all my drumming brothers seasoned pros or not doing thier thing on you tube. keep up the great work guys....
p.s. kinda makes me wish i stuck with the traditional grip thing
You play very good yourself and it`s great to hear and com in contact with other drummers. We all learn from each other and pick up great licks or grooves. Personaly I feel that one of the most important things is to have a good time and feel good wile playing. A good tecnique and time feel is of course important aspects that wil help us along.
thank you:-)Nice playing on your video. Keep it up (and if i might suggest a small change: tight up your resonance head an top head) Just a suggestion:-)
Thanks, it was the 1st time I tried recording the kit, i only used a kick and 2 overhead mics. Tuning, yeah, To be honest i didn't bother tuning the kit and that snare detunes it's self so quick it's ridiculous, a top end Craviotto as well, i usually use my Keplinger, much nicer. It does sound a lot more lively in the room, still learning with the mics!
The tuningthing is very individual and Craviotto should hold the tune I hear. I have never tried it myself however. I use a Yamaha Oak Custom snare and I am very satisfied with it. When it comes to mics I ended ut with CAD mics on the toms, BD and overhead. on the snare I us a Shure SM 57. The recording is done with a lap top and Ableton Live pluss EMU 1616 soundcard and Behringer AD/DA Converter.
SO I am youtubing to try to hear the differences in yamaha custom sets. I just heard an Oak Custom and it sounded shit compared to this kit. Is Oak considered a higher quality? Also, how do you tune your tom heads? 4th apart?...I am hearing a nice "doppler effect" (doh--uumm). Good stuff...nice demo
I see. I find if I tune resonant head approximately a 4th scale degree higer than batter head, then I get a nice doppler effect "doi-umm". Will you briefly note the advantages of better shell material? I use Pearl Export / Tama Rockstar kits and I tune, tune, tune! I have found tuning range to be small; therefore, I tune batter head to where drum sounds most open and resonant. I then tune reso head maybe 1-2 semitones higher. Sometimes tune heads 4th apart and works, but just those 2 ways.
I think that when you use in particular maple shells you will get a more open sound with "more body" and sustain than cheaper drums. This makes them (maple/birch) more difficult to tune, but it`s worth is! AND you will have a mutch bigger tuningrange to choose from than.
So, if you have the chance, try tha birch or maple drums from yamaha. I am pritty shure that you will hear a big difference.
I use CAD microphones on teh toms, bass drum and overhead on the snare I use a ShureSM57. The mics are placed an inc. over the rim. and the overhead are placed ca. 60 cm. over my head. The heads are Evans G2 coated on the toms, Evans snare dry on the snare and Evans EQ1/2 on the bassdrum. Important I use a very! thick front head on the bass drum.
yammy drums are the best..so to get that doppler effect on my drums what do i have to do to the tunning? could you have a look on my vid and give me some advise please......fantastic by the way.
after listening to your video I dont think you have to to too mutch with you`r tuning...
However I would recomend you to try one mic. on each tom pluss on the snare and Hi hat. (Overheads?) When you record, you might wan`t to try to do that digitaly with a computer and feks. Live 8 program.
The recording custom should sound great anyway. Good luck!!
Sorry, but I know nothing about D drum acoustic drums. I have been playing Yamaha since 1989, but offcourse I have tried ather drums like Pearl, Tama, Sonor, Ludwig, gretsch and Premier.
However maple drums in general have a warmer sound than the birch drums. Remember that the depth of the drum has a big effect on how the drum sounds.
I have been playing since I was 9 and starte out in a marching band. I think it`s important to develope a strong teqnic along with reading exersices. I wish you all the best!!
The 14 " is not well tuned.... but I 'l fix that until next time.
It's many great drums on the market today, but I think its remarcable that the birch drums still is popular. I think that feks. YAMAHA have done and is still doing great drums after they started with the 9000 (recording custom) drums. On this video I use the power sized drums wich gives extra low end to the sound.
Those are the best sounding drum i've ever heard! you must be some kind of tuning God my friend!Great!

Hi
No. Oak Custom is not a better drumset than the birch or maple drums.
Tuning..... I tune the drums different for different occations. The "doppler effect" is just that the under head is a bit to loose.
There are many way`s to tune drums.
I choose the "tone" first by tuning the under head. Then I tune the over head normaly a bit looser than the under head.
Thanks for asking:-)

Hi and thanks for asking:-)
I use CAD microphones on teh toms, bass drum and overhead on the snare I use a ShureSM57. The mics are placed an inc. over the rim. and the overhead are placed ca. 60 cm. over my head. The heads are Evans G2 coated on the toms, Evans snare dry on the snare and Evans EQ1/2 on the bassdrum. Important I use a very! thick front head on the bass drum.

Thank you!
after listening to your video I dont think you have to to too mutch with you`r tuning...
However I would recomend you to try one mic. on each tom pluss on the snare and Hi hat. (Overheads?) When you record, you might wan`t to try to do that digitaly with a computer and feks. Live 8 program.
The recording custom should sound great anyway. Good luck!!

hahaha. just using your jacket. mmm, what do you think about ddrum dominion maple? gimme your comment, thanks

Thank you for your responce!
Keep on drumming!!
