The 997 uses two parallel variable vane geometry (VTG) turbochargers. One is dedicated for each bank of three cylinders. With the flat-6 configuration, the turbochargers are mounted along side the valve covers. In effect, the VTG system makes the turbos behave as if they were sequential.

M5 owner shouldn't get too confident. Throw a few mods on the 911 Turbo (intake, turbo back exhaust, tune) and it should easily destroy the M5 in a straight line. Stock 911 Turbos easily trap in the 121 mph+ range and a modded one would be unbelievably fast.
