  • Your voice is so beautiful!! :3

  • Good job!

  • Well played, but you _cannot_ sing that song sitting down!

  • u suck at life

  • cool cover! XD

  • That was a wonderful version of that song. I have such a beautiful voice.I love Nellie and she has also been one of my favorite artist for many years. I just bought my first ukulele today and I would love to have the chords to this song!! Is there anyway you could send them to me? I would be so grateful!

  • If you feel anger when you hear how people claim there's nothing wrong with sex for money -- THAT is the anger on which the song is based. It shows the revolting ugliness of opinions that condone these practices and that ridicule whoever tries to make a stance against them.

  • Thank you! This is what I was trying to say but couldn't put into words very well.

  • I think she does a poor job of getting her point across, tho lovely voice. And i told her this on her You Tube video. I oppose the song! The irreverence is totally lost on me--and I'm a fairly intelligent person. One should not have to know a musician's history and character intimately to understand what is meant by her lyrics--one should be able to take a song for what it is worth--sans without "reading the singer's mind". This type of irreverence just makes a very serious problem worse.

  • The lyrics of Nellie McKay's songs are often complicated and multilayered and this one is no exception. I remember the first time I heard this song (the original) I found it confusing. McKay makes fun of people who make fun of feminists. That's the double layer.

  • oh i want an ukulele so bad! :]

your singing is also great. *-*

  • Do you approve of an underage girl being stolen by a PIMP to sell her body on the streets, and being beaten up by her Pimp or John if she doesn't do what she is told.

Well it's real-----Please grow up. Stop promoting abuse of women and girls. No, it isn't funny. See website called Children of the Night.

  • First of all - I didn't write this song.

Secondly - especially if you listen to the album version of the song, it's quite obviously meant to be satirical & is actually a pro-feminism statement about the stupidity of the average American misogynist bonehead.

  • But why waste one's talent singing such trash? There are so many other things to be satirical about. Be original!! Please, not teen prostitutes who are kidnapped by pimps and beaten up, etc. My niece is "missing child of the night." Far below her emotional age, easily influenced, she believes the pimps when they tell her "they love her". Now she is LOST--maybe DEAD. Please find something harmless to satirize, if necessary. Or raise REAL awareness about something tragic. Thank you.

  • Again, I did not write the song, Nellie McKay did, so if you really can't understand the positive political satire that's being employed, you should take it up with her.

To say that I approve of or support prostitution is an utterly ridiculous claim.

As for me apparently not raising awareness about social tragedies, I would advise you to listen to the songs I've written about gay rights, which is my main political concern.

I'm very sorry about your niece, but please stop insulting my morals.

  • Kaile-But you chose to PLAY the song on YOU TUBE for ALL the world to hear?--that child prostitution is a JOKE? I don't care if you wrote it or not. You ARE endorsing it. The satire is NOT FUNNY. Please reconsider it. If you really want to do something--why not volunteer at Children of the Night. They need caring, talented staff--and get a sense of what you are really doing by singing such lyrics.I gotta go to get updates on my sister's daughter-she is so vulnerable on streets/you wanna help?

  • I choose to play the song on YouTube for all to hear because I agree with the message being sent by the satire: that prostitution, violence, oppression of women, etc. are BAD THINGS. Like all art worth paying attention to, this song is sending a powerful social message. But like all art, you can choose to interpret it however you want. Just know that your interpretation is not what the artist intended, nor is it what I intend.

    Good luck with your organization.

  • kardste, if it really bothers you THAT MUCH then why did you watch it? Nobody is forcing you. You said to kaile "be original." If you looked at her channel you'd see many of the amazing songs that she herself has written. I also can't believe that you told her to "grow up." Don't you think you're being a little hypocritical? Check yourself!

  • That's great! I absolutely love this song. You covered it really well, and you have a great voice. Any chance I can get a copy of those chords?

  • this was wonderful!! i've been trying to find chords for this for quite sometime but can't :/ could you help me out please?! i'd really appreciate it!

  • Sounds easier than it is. Nice cover!

  • 1Heyy I need to cover this song!

All I got so far is

    G, Am, barred C

    xD not very far.

  • could you post the chords to this song??

  • bravo :

join the first unofficial fanpage about Nellie :o)

  • Hey there Kate,

I really enjoyed your awesome cover.

I was wondering if you could post the progression? It's nowhere to be found on the internet...

  • Nice job :)

  • Great cover.

    What are the chords?

  • This song is so wrong but so much fun. I love Nellie McKay, and I love your cover of this song.

  • i wonder if you could say what strum pattern is used here? thanks in advance :)

  • Count out loud "one and two and three and four and" but only strum on "one, two and.. and four and." That's the best way I can describe it without writing it out in notation.

  • Would you be able to tab this for me? Or just give me the chords? I play the Uke too and would love to learn it.

  • yay!! you're good. I loved it!!

  • You're awesome

  • Wow, good job!

  • You just made me go illegally download some Nellie McKay.

You just made a criminal out of me.

  • hahaha sorry.

If you like it, you should really buy it, though! She's amazing.

  • Wow that was fast. I forget it's not 3:45 am over there.

Since I can't ask you to send a mix CD overseas, maybe you can suggest some of her best titles?

And don't worry, I usually buy it when I like it ;)

  • Get Away From Me, in my opinion, is definitely her best album.

Pretty Little Head I like a lot less but it has its moments (Cupcake, GLADD, Tipperary..)

Obligatory Villagers is pretty good. I love Mother of Pearl (of course) & Gin Rummy.

  • Thank you :)

  • You are going to burn this CD for me. There is no choise, you must.

  • Tell you what, I'll burn you a Nellie McKay mix CD, instead of just this album, because I think most of her better stuff is older.

  • Great version of a great tune!

  • well done and thanx for introducing me to another great artist ....

  • Very creative.

  • you have a really great voice.

  • Great!

if the sound was transferred the other way, you could have hear me laugh all the time and applaud at the end.

(I posted this comment already, but it didn't appear. I hope it will not suddenly show up twice).

  • I love it! :] great song... great cover... I will definitely check out your faves for her performing it. :]
