I can't understand so well because it appears to be written in spanish (argentinian) and portuguese, and a verse in hebrew. Maybe an old sephardi (hebrew-iberian) dialect.
I've finded this translation to english, but although is not literal,it keeps the heart of the song:
@kingkeith666 Morenika, they call me my skin was pure white from the fire of the summer sun I am dark Chorus: Morenika so very beautiful in your eyes - a burning fire my heart is all yours Morenika , they call me all those who go down to the sea if again they call me I will go with them again Morenika, they call me son to the ruling king if he calls me again I will follow him Title Morenika Album Aurora Artists Avishai Cohen Composers Traditional Arranged by Avishai Cohen Lryics Traditional
Being really accurate, it is not really singing in spanish as we speak it today. The language is called Ladino and it is spoken by the Sefaradim (jews from what it was the Ottoman Empire which had a big part of Spain) Still today it is spoken by a large community in Israel which has their own radio station etc... Ladino is a mix of spanish and hebrew same as Yiddish is a mix of old German with hebrew.
love this song! Avishai Cohen has so beautiful melodies and songs in his albums!
the sense of Morenica here is for the skin and not the hair, in spanish we can say for a girl "morena de pelo" (dark haired), or "morena de piel" (dark skinned), in this case it takes his sense with "the sun darkened me" (skin, not hair for sure :)
What a deep and simply beautyful song. So strong and powerful with its softness. I hope Avishai come to Warsaw to play on Jazz Festival in Old City in Summer. Best wishes!
Truly amazing. Just breathtaking. I'm impressed with the depth and warmth of A. Cohen's voice. Best wishes from Poland. Hope to see & experience Mr. Avishai live...

Morenika a mi me llaman yo blanca naci ("Dark one" they cal me though I was born white) porque bajo el sol del verano yo me hice asi (because under the summer sun I became this way) morenika, graciosika sos morena yo, graciosa y hoxos pretos tu. ("dark one", pretty you are, dark and pretty am I, and black eyed are you.) morenika a mi me llaman los marineros si otra vez a mi me llaman me voy con ellos ("dark one" call me the sailors, if they call me again, I will go with them)

Y para completarte la idea boludo ,el ladino , es simplemente una forma de latin mediterraneo ,enriquecido por lenguas arabes vernaculares ; un proto-castellano
I'm not sure, but from the little hebrew and spanish, I think it says approximatly:
My skin is dark
I was born white
And the sun darkened me
My skin is dark
And I'm graceful
Dark is full of grace
It seems to me a ladino variation on the song of songs, 2 chapter: I'm black and beautiful, daughter of Jerusalem (...) Don't be scornful, the sun burnt me, etc.
