Nice collection. I have to say I'm surprised you recommend failed hypothesis over Freke and Gandy. I felt like TJM was much more balanced and scholarly... I think you'll actually come to enjoy Nietzsche if you read The Anti-Christ or Human All Too Human. He was an existentialist, not really a nihilist (ni-yal-ist)... don't let other people do your thinking for you either, your own opinion about a primary source is worth 10 of these books on lit.criticism :) One love brother, thanks for posting.
Have you ever read, "50 Reasons people give for believing in a God?" It's an Atheist book, but the author is very open minded and shows both non and religious views.
You have an interesting book collection! :) One of the things I like about you is that your not afraid to examine theist and atheist arguments. Knowing the pro and cons of any belief (or the lack of) is not only a sign of an open mind but someone who isn't afraid to re examine how that (non) belief fits in your life from time to time. It's a shame you threw out those books.
I was gutted about Robert Jordan. Followed him a while on his blog when I found out he was sick. Luckily he wrote an outline. I also like Raymond E. Feist and Terry Goodkind.
Doherty is very meticulous and lays out a very convincing case. I'm not a scholar, so I can't verify all the stuff he puts forward, but what little I do know is in perfect agreement with the evidence he cites (unlike my experience with Achyra S.). I'm really looking forward to Richard Carrier's book on the same subject. It should be even better because Carrier is a better writer (IMO) and he actually IS a real scholar.
Great video AtheistPaladin, Nietzsche is pretty indispensable in my humble opinion. His work The Geneaology of Morals puts christianity on the slab and psychologically and philosophically dissects it as a life-denying religion before the eyes of the reader, great stuff. But anything by him is great reading in my opinion, and the biography you have there by Walter Kaufmann is one (if not the) finest available.
I am so glad that you are into fiction. I grow tired of seeing nothing but non fiction books on peoples shelves. Your book shelf looks wonderful Ernest :-)
suns of god is a great book on comparative mythology

If you didn't see it there then it is not there.

As you're interested in philosophy do you have an opinion on John Gray?
Straw Dogs was recommended to me, but I thought it was a really weak book.
It became a point of tension between my friend and I, he thought it was brilliant!

Sorry, never heard of it.

Have you read the trilogy by Lawhead, The Song of Albion? It's very good. He's a Christian and his trilogy echoes that but I still like it.
Nice bookshelf!

Nietzche was actually opposed to nihilism, but he was intrigued by much of it, he saw it as a challenge that man must overcome. Hence the Ubermensch.
His relationship with nihilism is rather complex, you really should look into it, its quite fascinating.
silentbob36 3 years ago
Do you know who did invent nihilism? In what book?
TheAtheistPaladin 3 years ago
Wikipedias article on nihilism is pretty good

I knew there was an Nietzsche/Nihilism contection, I just didn't know he was on my side! I should look forward to Nietzsche work.
