chris hillman of the byrds is respondsible for what the canyon was in the 60s. he was the first of the musicians to move in, and all the rest followed soon after. heady days heady times.
Spent the summer of 1978 age 20 in Los Angeles. Great memories of Sunset Blvd where we used to hang out at Tower Records. What a great city. With this video I can almost hear Bob Seger blasting out Hollywood nights and the Stones playing Miss You.They played Anaheim Stadium that summer. Great times. Great city
Wow, it's nice to view the drive thru Laurel Canyon from the POV of a passenger holding a camcorder, during the midday. I've never even seen this road during the day, OK, maybe only once. I only drove thru there around 7:30-8PM to get from The Valley to get to what used to be The Coconut Teaszer, the best rock club of all time.
Every night, two stages, one upstairs, the other in the basement, each stage had 5 music acts each night, for a good cheap cover charge. Those days are LONG GONE.
I used to to do this drive every morning driving my friend from Laurel to Kaiser just so that I could use his car.Stayed with him for a month every year from about 75-85. Not much changes. Fabulous video though
Just finished the book. Had this burning desire to drive Laurel. I live near Fountain/vine. Now I don't have to. I'll stay in bed, listen to Joni & Mama and smoke another joint. thanks.
wow... what timing.... I just bought the book, Laurel Canon the Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighborhood by Michael Walker and started it this afternoon.... kind of neat to see the video!
...how strange Metrobilbao, I started reading that very same book this morning (the bright blue and red cover hurts my eyes!!) thats why ive come to Youtube to check out the references!! ..and ive stayed at The Chateau Marmont and the "Riot House" on Sunset!! How I miss LA, got to go back soon!
I found the book intriguing. Yea the cover is wild.. What I found very interesting was Zappa's disdain for drug use. That suprised me actually. Some of the writing was awkward at times... long run on sentences but most of the info was neat to know.
didnt know about zappas disdain for drugs. I was reccomended the book by Amazon because of other books i had bought. Just finished Jimmy Pages bio, nothing new there really! You might enjoy " Waiting for the sun" about rockstars and LA in general which was quite interesting. Managed to get me a 1st edition copy of "Life at the (Chateau) Marmont" about ten years ago which is a great read, and they are going for $800- $1000 on the open market!!
I admire the way this has been shot. In Europe, where I live Laurel Canyon has a legendary reputation through its connection with Joni Mitchell, John Mayall and more recently in the pages of thriller writer Michael Connelly.
Nice. Your timing was good...not the usual traffic problems. Too bad you didn't zoom in on more of the street signs, or the legendary Pandora's Box corner (For What it's Worth) and 'they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.' Nice job though. RIP Denny Doherty.

That's definitely Donald Fagen singing, probably Steely Dan era although I don't know this one.
secordman 4 years ago
'scuse my ignorance, is that a Steely Dan song?
malo66 3 years ago
Yes it's called Barrytown, from the album Pretzel Logic.
secordman 3 years ago
Thanks Secordman
Back in the 70s I would not have known what a pretzel was, but in 2000 I did a great tour of California - I live in England.

what gave it away that it was Steely Dan? perhaps the begininng when it popped up on the bottom of the screen maybe???
