this is not a dirty hit, it's not a tackle...as a hockey player you hate to see this but you have to realize that he never intended for this to happen. he's a forechecker, he was simply doing his job by finishing his check, and van ryn turned the wrong way, or in a way he didnt expect. van ryn putting his back to the hit actually makes it worse in this case.

Kostopolous is a 4th line, hard-working forechecker who has to follow through on his body check or he is out of a job. You are taught to finish your checks at an early age and you are also taught how to take a hit. Van Ryn makes 2 mistakes - he starts to loop like he is going around the net (so TK commits right there) and then he tries to plant his feet at the last second. Suicide. Stop the video at 0:04 and see Van Ryn facing his original direction which is heading towards the net.
