Vornavalley: do you really think it was a shame? ok, the DC-9 was OK, but the DC-8 was a downgraded 707, the DC-10 was ugly and a downgraded L-1011 (and yes i know the DC-10 sold more), the MD-11 was a flop, loud and outmatched by the 767 and 777 and the MD-80's + 90's are loud, nasty and dirty (enginewise.)

Yeah - I think Mcdonald Douglas had some very innovative designs. During the recent problems with electrical wiring coming loose, a lot of pilots said they still love to fly the aircraft even though they are getting old now. It would have been nice to have an alternative to Boeing and Airbus. I think the problems with the cargo door locking mechanism actually killed off MD.
