  • How do u tune your bass drum to get that marching sound

  • @ericj56 omfg im wondering tooooo

  • Oh man. Simple question, not such a simple answer. Drum tuning (especially marching bass) is subjective. There is a convetional marching bass tuning (which I highly disagree with) that consists of perfect 4th and 5th intervals depending on the size of the drum and the key of the band music. for example, when the band is playing a show mostly in C where they use 32, 28, 24, 20, 18 inch drums might be C, G, C, F, C. Personally, I think it sounds strange when bass drums are too tonal and distict.

  • BTW, head choice and muffling will grossly determine the sound quality of the drum.

I always also consider the type of head, players ability/technique, the bassdrum parts, band voicing, etc. I typically use smaller intervals (closer to major 3rds) that are not necessarily distict.

Best thing to do is find a line with the sound you like, then ask someone who knows. If you have a good ear, you can probably figure it out.

  • sick, im a snare player myself but it's something about bass that has me doing stuff like this at home myself lol :D
