Honestly, I am really happy Alex stopping playing classical guitar in performance. He just doesn't pull it off the way Steve Howe or Steve Morse can. I'm glad it's gone.
@gumbalooza Check out that interview with Alex from Guitar Player from 1985. When asked about classical guitar, Alex said he's not comfortable playing it because he just not good at it. Steve Morse, on the other hand, can race up and down on those guitars. Alex even said he will never be that good.
@bearmare ok yeah so he said he wasnt as comfortable playing it, and yeah, i know steve morse can kick the shit out of a classical guitar.
BUT
it still sounds sick ass, and its a well written song... IMO. im not for comparing musicians to each other because someone will always be there to play the devils advocate. but please man dont hate on this cause " he cant play it as good as the other guy" Thats not what music is about
Oh man!! Geddy should've had his synths set to the sound/tone that we hear on this recording for ESL. Sounds SO much more ethereal and renaissance like! \m/
Audio-wise, this is one of the best Rush videos I've seen on Youtube yet (and I'm not including any official Rush videos). Wonder how the person who filmed this managed to smuggle in a video camera. Because back in 1983, camcorders/video cameras weren't the itsy-bitsy, almost totally pocketable things you see now.
@Pictor100 I wondered the same thing. Video cameras in those days were large, shoulder carried pieces of equipment. Most would do video capture only and would have to feed to a separate, but equally large, video tape recorder. I'm thinking this individual might have worked at the venue to get this in and set up. And kudo's to that person!
Listen carefully to these lyrics young people. This is an allegory for how socialist (liberal) governments take away our freedoms and destroy liberty in the name of "fairness." While you smoke pot and listen to this video your freedoms are being chopped down one tree at a time, bay hatchet ax and saw...
I was lucky enough to perform Broon's Bane on stage in front of Terry Brown this year. I said "Terry this is for you" and played BB, and then we went into the rest of our set.
There was no studio version recorded (that I know of). If there was, it hasn't been released. There is, however, a very good quality performance of it on their "Exit Stage Left" live album.
@MrGuit4r2009 They clipped on to the beginning of The Trees on the Exit....Stage Left live album released after or during the Moving Pictures tour. This video is from the Signals tour. It's a tribute to Terry Brown, who was their producer for over 10 years. Signals was the last album he produced.
Neil Peart on more than one occasion has said that it's just about trees. Nothing more. Nothing less. Right wing Rush fans (Says that 5 times fast) say it's an anti-union song, or something to that extent. Believe what you want, the only thing that matters is that it's an awesome song.
I was a Yesfan for thirty years. I've been a Rush fan for about five years. As far as I'm concerned, Lifeson is a better guitarist than Howe. Of course, Metheny takes top spot, but Lerxst is next in line!
archives?? totally forgot about that one, remember seeing the record in stores when I was younger, had all their albums so didn't see the point in getting it
Like 10 years? What is that "like"? Or did you mean to say "10 years"?? Like, like like oh my god, and he goes he goes and like like like.....You really need to study the English language!!! You are a GD moron!!!
Exuse me!!!!!!!! (I know that's spelled wrong too) I'm Norwegian and 14 years old, so would you prefer me speaking norwegian. Or you probably don't know where norway is anyway!!!
@cptnoremac You're completely wrong!! If he meant to say "somewhere around 10 years" then he should have said exactly that.....and it IS the same as being a valley girl.....wake up.
He should have said that because you like it better? Using the word "like" is in no way equitable to being a valley girl. I don't know where you get your facts from, but you'd better check again.
Even if you were right, that's no excuse to call someone a moron. That just shows how shallow you are.
No, he should have spoken properly because it's quite simply ......"proper"....I'm not shallow, I just have respect for people that know how to speak. Now go back to bed ok?
My first album was the 3 record set Archives given to me by my sister when I was 15 in 1979 . My first concert ever was Rush at San Diego Jun 9th 1981 , It was more than a lifetime of emotions packed into just a couple of hours . I will never forget that night EVER !!
I've never understood why Broon's Bane was removed as the intro to The Trees on the Exit Stage Left vid? It seems like a crazy thing to do. It was one of the many highlights from their shows back then.
I totally agree with you! I've owned that VHS tape since 1981...In fact, I still have it and it still works! In my obsessive Rush fan opinion, that era 1980-1981 was the best era for them live. I have thousands of boots from just about every year, but the Moving Pictures tour was the highlight for me.
@Codackussell On top of Prelude, Armageddon, and The Camera Eye, they also played a reggae intro to Working man that year...The best bootleg clip I own! I don't know why they butchered the Exit video. Also, it's totally out of set list sequence. I'd give my left foot for a good quality video of Pearts solo from that year...
How I wish it were 1983 again. Every Rush album release marked a little chapter in my teenage :) Wide open song structures before it all started to get a little too polished. Nice vid has filled me full of nostalgia :) ty
Too polished? I think thats selling their later stuff a little short. Theres some really good songs on those albums. I mean, Signals is my favorite, but my first Rush album was Hold Your Fire (age 6 in 96). That got me into them.
awesome video... incredible sound and video quality. I don't know what to say about the sped up versions of this performance though... perhaps its is a video conversion blip? Who cares, sounds cooler I guess, they rock anyway
The guitar is in tune, so the video isn't sped up - they just rocked it live.
Dig Alex's new-wave 'do - Signals was the first tour I saw, and at first I thought Alex had died or something, and they replaced him with the Flock of Seagulls guitarist.
this is the FASTEST i have ever heard this song played.....hard to believe they could have ever played it any faster tempo than this one...unreal...it is too fast in the end
bearmare, are you retarded. they are in quebec, a place in french canada. Did you think quebec was something you could order off of a menu or something?
That red kit with the brass hardware was awesome, also , if you notice, this is the only tour he used this set up with the percussion & the hardware. The next tour he got the electronic pads & eliminatedmost of the physical percussion - most notably, the tubular bells behind him
Thank you for posting this. Alex is the man. I agree with Mowac's post - thank god for youtube. This is priceless. I too am amazed by the sound quality. How?!?!?!?!
This is why Youtube is such a godsend. Where else would you ever get to see this rare footage. I can't belive how good the quality is. It's almost like this concert was last week instead of 25 years ago!
Broons Bane is just a piece that Alex penned to play as a lead up to the Trees.

If that bothers you, I'm pretty sure you will stroke if you read the usual comment on Youtube.
Saying "like 10 years" is his way of saying "somewhere around 10 years, but I'm not completely sure." It's not the same as being a valley girl.
