  • I'm old enough to remember what it was like in the 50/60's , we had 3 cinema's, a great open air swimming pool [ it only needed a roof ] , a football club , the Top Twenty club in the Town Hall [ the only place to be on a friday night ] , the Bernie inn for meals, the Penguin fish & chip shop and real shops in the town centre.

Now its just one big housing estate !.

  • DAMN! There are almost no jobs or real attractions a couple of struggling businesses and fucking idiots off there head on coke speed and booze at the weekends, and smoking weed all through the week robbing each other for drugs spare change and phones stomping on each others heads. What really is that great about Trowbridge? if you want a historic town bradford on avon is 4 miles away tops if you want a city -Bath. 70% of people in Trowbridge will stay there doing what they do now forever.

  • Look anyone can take a load of close up images of depression and closure in any town or city. What has fucked up Trowbridge as much as recession are the developers - same with any town. Hell yeah it still has the Cricket club but I remember the cricket ground on Bradley Road tool - Now it's a B&Q. Trowbridge rail station is tragic and the closure of the Lido/outside swimming pool didn't help. As a county town it needs to stand up to public amenity growth. Hey it got it's skatepark after 20 yrs!

  • I live in Trowbridge; have done for the last 3 years. Not my favourite place in the world (I'm from Bristol and miss the life there!). Trouble with Trowbridge is it is full of crappy cheap shops. We have no decent shops - M&S, John Lewis, Debenhams etc etc. We have to go to Bath for quality shops. Instead we have all the cheap shops, and the Shires looks like it's full of inbreds - most of the shoppers have no teeth! lol

  • There are valid comments about councillors allowing the demolishing of old buildings & the slow revival of parts of the town but I travel a lot & I see much worse places than Trowbridge. It is the county town of Wiltshire & the birthplace of Isaac Pitman, who invented shorthand script used in legal & medical practices, the typewriter & the qwerty keyboard. I challenge you to read the history of the town & still say you think it's dying.

  • @andyfarquar "It is the county town of Wiltshire & the birthplace of Isaac Pitman, who invented shorthand script used in legal & medical practices, the typewriter & the qwerty keyboard."

wow did you read that on the wall in wetherspoons?

History, bog all to do with it. Were talking about job creation in the town, about offer young people something, anything, to get off the dole and into work.

  • @andyfarquar. it has and still is dying. u say read about its history, you've totally shot your own argument in the foot. Trowbridge had a massive industry "HAD". From spitfire's to cotton mills, some of the first cinemas in the country, brewery's even the pie factory helped town moral. i personally am not from trow (hartlepool), i would never move away from here but you can not deny the fact that this town is dying a terrible death. how many small business open and close within 6 months - most

  • Although i love being from trowbridge they should have left it so it was more liek Southwick or Beckington, much better places tbh. And liek atleast in Bath when they build new things they try and make it fit with everything else

  • I went to school in trowbridge, so all the early morning smells have gone, Bowyers, Ushers. Even my old school has gone to be replaced by a housing site, ar least the cricket ground still remains. Thats progress!!!

  • @mentonish

Good compilation. I also went to School in Trowbridge (80s) - I remember the smell of Bowyers, and The Ushers Brewery. The Brewery was split over several sites, and they would sent the barrels on a conveyor belt that went over the road - like something out of trumpton! All gone new - houses. Its the same everywhere. Factories dont seem to survive in town/city centers.

  • compare trowbridge to frome, bradford on avon and bath. all the latter kept their historic stone buildings while our councillors allowed ours to be demolished. look at the pathetic replacements of the train station and the court building opposite the town hall(wedding dress and chicken shop)....what a pile of shite that is!!!

  • people check out 'the creature from jekyll island' to hear how the federal reserve has crippled the planet financially very interesting

  • One day when I have the money, I'll buy the old mill by Tesco and bribe the planners to let me convert it to flats. :D Always wanted to do that, every time I've seen it.

  • We still have our Cadets :)

  • Well, this is the price you pay for having an economy built on a bunch of overpaid people running around London buying and selling money but actually producing nothing besides sh!t!

  • @1n322n no, I meant that Pasquale himself has gone, I'm sure, but the place still has his name above the door.

  • @cardiffiron some morrocans are running it now its S**T

  • it was never alive...

  • I left Trowbridge in late '92 - sorry but it looks pretty much the same as back then !

Still has the best pizza parlour ever though - Pasquale's - mind you even Pasquale has left Trowbridge hasn't he...!??

  • Yes you don't even have those squealing pigs going into Bowyers to be slaughtered anymore. Oh the nostalgia.!

  • Trowbridge was never a cotton town. It was a wool town. Also it was the Manchester of the West not the South.

Anyway it's a real town not a chocolate box wiltshire village.

  • aww, i feel bad for this town :( i just searched my last name (which is trowbridge) and it came up

  • @rrt0x0x My last name is Trowbridge too!!! And i did the same thing...Weirdd!

  • hehe i used to play in the cotten mills as a kid .... lived in trowbridge all my life and still do now ! its not so bad ... but not really much jobs around im currently working in poole .. but live in trowbridge.

  • hehe i lived in trowbridge all my life .... worked in bowyers for a good 7 years before it also closed down... i even used to play in those old cotten mills when i was in school lol ...

  • I'm an American but my last name is Trowbridge, it's not cool what the town is going through and I know I probably have zero real connection to it but I just want to be in the town from where I get my last name.

  • @ilgeneralisimo Someday that is.......

  • lol

  • makes me laugh people allways saying trowbridge is shit these people are people that have never been anywhere ealse, trowbridge aint that bad trust me i been to places witch are alot worse once i was working in scunthorpe and i thoght i was on a shamless set or summit was a right dump

  • It may be bad but there are a lot worse places to live. A friend of mine once described Trowbridge as paradise compared with where he comes from. He's form Croydon and that is a shithole.

  • @Napier1966 is he Tom?

  • its getting worce... theres useless shops apering now

  • I live in trowbridge and I agree with you trowbridge is dying and it has been for years still it's a good thing their building that new shopping centre by the shires that will help

  • but thats really small :/ I live in Melksham, and when i first moved here everyone went to trow for shopping, nowadays we all park in trow get on the train and go down the line to bath. :( its sad but i guess trowbdrige is modern enough these days

  • i was born at trowbridge hospital ;(

  • Me too! The shame!

  • you missed all the good parts like the...... uhhhhhhhhh, ummmmmmm,
