  • Legend

  • great stuff. right up there with jimmy and charles.

  • the best

  • This Kick Ass Jazz music reminds me of Bill Cosby.

  • Who is the drummer?

  • whos that creepy lookin dude playing the guitar?

  • awesome ! hey check out my hammond B-200 and leslie speaker, moynunez54

  • SOOOOO COOOOL;)

  • Very fine; too sorry you missed Lenny..

  • He makes it look so easy - the true mark of a master - !

  • Hi guys.

    I don't know but...

Is JoeyD playing the pedals with his right foot???

  • @gcpezzi Just to add... there is a video of Dr.Lonnie Smith and JoeyD playing 'Someday my prince will come' and I also thought Dr.Lonnie was playing the pedals with his right foot!

That's weird... I never did that, put my swell pedal in the left side of the pedalboard... :-/

  • @gcpezzi I think the camera angle is inverted. If you look at 0:37 it looks normals.

  • it's too bad he sounds amazing b/c of his weight.

  • awesome

  • His brother performed at my grad party!

  • Owh my god this is so damm crazy,So amazing keyboardist...

  • ON FIRE!!! GO BOY!!!

  • Hey man, I would trade my weight for his to be able to play any instrument like that... But especially that set of keys.

  • @MultiGrotto huh??????????????

  • @MultiGrotto yes it does, you idiot. hes not a lingerie model

  • @kabelFluestern Absolutely correct! In fact he's a linguini model. (I love Joey but that was irresistable, forgive me, I have a form of pun tourette's syndrome).

  • @MultiGrotto Would you like to know what else is rather "lame"? The fact that you are unable to spell MUSICIAN! Stick to playing Guitar Hero and leave real music to men like Joey!

  • Zseniális a pali, vitán felül. A súlya meg kit érdekel.

  • suona da dio!

  • @alhoschema: They're not 16ths they are 32's and maybe 32nd triplets! He is so unassuming and as someone said no frills, just the music. I couldn't believe how little his left hand moves but the bass line is smoking and when he starts with the comping in the left hand you just see a slight movement in his middle when the left foot takes over the bassline as smoothly as silk! Bobby C's is in Phoenix and I believe, is where the name of that piece comes from. I first saw him there.

  • Joey is the man. What a beautiful Hammond sound. Love the key click on this particular organ - it makes the organ breathe and talk - in the Hands of Joey that is.

I also can't get enough of Joey's lighting fast 16th-note playing, all crystal clear, no B.S. no filler - all highly creative and pure awesomeness.

  • Fantastic! Just saw him in Chicago at the Green Mill last week with Fareed Haque on guitar. He did not disappoint.

  • Joey D can be as big as he wants to be and you could NEVER play the way he does! He might be big But his BIG ASS CAN GET DOWN ON THE IVORIES! NOW go throw yourself in front of a passenger bus ding dong!

  • this is great i just hate the clicking action on the fingazzz

  • Joey kicks ass!!

  • If there's anything relevant about Joey D's weight, it's that we should all hope it doesn't interfere with his health, so we can all enjoy his music as long as we can.

  • Super Swing & Drive,like a J,Smith ...my pleasure for Joey

  • Love it! We saw Joey at Scullers at the Doubletree in Boston several years ago. What a show! We were right up front, and I could have leaned back and put my feet up on the stage. Nothing like hearing that B3 up close and personal!!

  • Is there anyone who has more chops than Joey D? I'm really not so sure...

  • ûhm_Änÿ_gúys_wANt_tò_chât_wïth_mË

  • Seriously guys, stop mock him about his weight! It is just mean and it doesnt help him in any way. Sure, encourage him to lose some weight so he can live a longer and healthier life, but don't joke about his weight, it's just hurtful.

  • I love it when i see something so impressive i start laughing. Very nice stuff here.

  • Fuck. That's all I think when I watch Joey play.

  • 500 lbs of pure soul.

  • This performance is INCREDIBLE!

  • I watched his performance recently. Very enjoyable and very fun.

  • Joey is taking up where Jimmy Smith left off......

  • Carrying the baton passed on by Jimmy Smith, Groove Holmes, et. al.

    Nicely done Joey!

  • Imádom!!!szuper!!!

  • lay off joe period..hes a master this kind of rederect makes my organ swell!

  • Joey D is the MAN!!! he sends me to the 5th dimension every time!!!! ;)

  • This groove is siiiiiick

  • @JazzAce340 ......Err umm, are you dyslexic? I didn't say he's good b/c he's overweight, I said he's overweight b/c he's good... which was also in a certain amount of jest... Don't be butthurt.

  • Can people just shut up about Joey's weight already? Yes, it's not healthy to be overweight, but niether are many other things. Smoking and drinking are awful for your health too, so stop whining about this guy who enjoys eating! Listen to him WORKOUT on the Hammond!

  • I will try to express myself as clearly as possible:

    fucking play

  • Vou tentar me expressar da forma mais clara possível:

Vai tocar bem assim na .. que pariu!!!!!

  • is the first time i listen to him, but that was amazingg!!! im mouthopen

  • I love this kind of music .... fantastic artist!

  • Brilliant! Excellent! A wonderful treat to watch & listen! Thanks & Cheers from Austria!

  • The big man is the best in the bus.

  • I had the honor to shake that mans hand once in Denver CO when he played with Pat Bianci. It was amazing. He will forever be a beast on his instrument

  • ...... I guess it needs to be said that it's about the music not his weight... If that's the thought you have when you "watch" this, then you don't get it.

  • @KrummyBear obviously you don't get it. The only reason people on here are concerned about his weight is that being that over weight can lead to an early death and it would be a tragedy to lose Joey early. Get off your high horse

  • @toolfan6790 It's not really relevant. If that's what this video inspired you to say, then again, "you don't get it".

  • @KrummyBear no i do get it. what you dont get is that there are people behind the music and its natural to have concern for those people who make such great music if they look unhealthy.

  • @toolfan6790 First of all, the actual state of being unhealthy is far more important than looking unhealthy. And the actual act of being a kick ass keys player is far more important than being mildly obese. DeFranc wouldn't even be fat if he wasn't constantly sitting down at an organ/piano practicing, and subsequently, would not be as good.

  • Yeeeessss! Made my day!

  • Gotta love those keyclicks. Classy and sophisticated.

  • TITAN!

  • Surely this isn't his regular rhythm section? They sound like studio players for those jazz practice tracks that you practice soloing over, very clean and skillful, but just something missing.

  • @BillyWillis89 By "something" in 'something missing'... perhaps you mean 'mistakes'?

  • @N1pp00 That would imply that I think a regular rhythm section should make mistakes, which I don't. They just sound kind of generic to me. If you don't think so, that's cool.

  • Is that a B3 or a C3? Can't tell the difference

  • @magichristo As you can see Joey's feet it has to be a B3. The C3 has modesty covers front and on the side, that's the main difference between the two organs.

  • @magichristo It's a B3. legs on the B no legs on the C3

  • @PooPooOnMyNewShoe In fact its a New B-3 from Hammond-Suzuki. Cheers

  • Nice to hear 'younger' jazz players so devoted to playing blues with such conviction. (Something sadly absent among many.) Joey D has such a great touch. Terrific sense of time, gorgeous 'wet' organ tone - the whole ballo'wax. I wonder though, if he has some kind of glandular disorder. It's pretty hard not to notice how absolutely enormous he has gotten. Looks huger every time I see him. (Are there people anywhere else in the world Besides America that are this gigantic?)

  • I bet this fucking genious weights more than his hammond XD

wow, even better than jimmy, better than anyone else, wow

  • Each time you blink your eye, you miss about three of four keys he's been hitting

  • Jazz organists such as this fine gentleman convince me that the organ is one of the best instruments on Earth.

  • perfekt!

  • i saw joey some time ago in ann arbor and never forgot him, but damn! he's gotten fat... :(

  • Dear legendsofjazz: thank you for this one too. But... is it so difficult to post the names of the excellent musicians comping for Mr. DeFrancesco?

  • 2:48!!!!!!!!!Chills!!!!!!

  • he is the Best no matter how much he weights. I was lucky enough to listen to him live and it's an uforgetable experience !! Joey is the God

  • @saxopoulos who said anything about weight being bad

  • wow. I do'nt have any comment. he is the boss

  • Awesoooome!

  • He's burning it right here

  • For those asking who the drummer is- It's Carmen Intorre- he's a superb swinging organ drummer-one of the very best!

  • Joeys talent speaks for itself, he is a friend of mine I take offense for all those posts about his weight! Apparently all THOSE people are not comfortable with themselves that they have to take pot shots at those they do not know! He is a great musician and a great person to boot!

  • @canyouhelpmeplease69

Your comment at those who complain about Joey's weight should also be your concern. I agree that it would be a shame to lose such a talented individual!

  • Actually, this would be the Blues for Bobby in F.......he ain't playin' in C

  • @jfels81 Bobby C owns a jazz spot in Phoenix that Joey plays at a lot called "Bobby C's"

  • Bellissimo, da notare la posizione dei musicisti....non siguardano perchè sono disposti l'uno di fronte l'altro ma sfalsati, quindi non si vedono.

  • Where can I get the tab on this tune? And on which album? thanks a lot!! =)

  • carmen!!! yeah dude

  • everybody should shut about his weight and just enjoy the music

  • bet his hammond organ doubles as a dining table and kitchen thats why he is so obese

  • Comment removed

  • @nyshoefly when you learn your swing pattern then we will talk.

  • @nyshoefly are you kidding - this guy is one of the best organ drummers on the planet. I played with him in NY and he's very swinging.

  • Im going to see him at the Jazz Organ Jam in philly next weekend. Home town gig for him! It's going to be great!! Tickets are a bit pricey though... 60 bucks worth it, you think? Its him and someone else I have never heard of.

  • non so che dire : molto forte , molto grande , molto magnifico , , eccellente, molto orinale, ..... ... ...

  • YEAH!.....What technique...hell of a player!

  • His fingers used all the calories and available energy resources, so his muscles forgot how to walk. Thus, he gained a fucking fat cunt ton of weight. Like a lot. So fat I wouldn't be surprised if you slipped in a Dollartree store or rolled into a ravine after suing McDonalds for a diet problem.

  • @oooSHELBYoooHUGEooo fuck you asshole - look in the mirror you douch drip

  • @oooSHELBYoooHUGEooo rolpf. yes this is so. and he plays p. sweet music.

  • Saw him in Oslo some time ago with Steve Gadd and others.. He is fantastic!

  • talent is his heart

  • who's that drummer? he's really smooth and solid, good musician to be accompanied with..

  • damn he's fast! O_o

  • I heard about Joey in 1999 when I recieved tickets to a show of his. It was amazing. This guy is true master of his craft.

  • Very proud to have seen Joey live.

  • Joey is a huge talent. We need him around for a very long time.

  • He's almost like the white version of Jimmy Smith

  • Love it! Very nice indeed!

Thank you and to Resonantforce for sharing!

  • Drummer ain't getting nothin but me a drink..

  • Those chords in the beginning is so moody!

  • Awesome vid! Joey you are the best! Drummer is gettin it! And look at the Guitarist! Man is holding it down! Great job everyone! You are all legends in my book!

  • Joey is very good, how do you think he would sound if he was to play the all new hammond elegante Xh-272.

  • How do you play that riff at 1:11. Directly on 1:11. I want that riff!!!!! AWESOME MR. DeFRANCESCO !

  • yeah it's a sexy little lick allright.

  • Great...!!! I would like to see Joey lose some of that weight...thats not healthy and I would hate to such a talent leave us too soon... : (

  • I agree. It's certainly a sensitive topic. It's probably difficult to remain svelte when you're on the road and eating well with no exercise. But Oscar Peterson became huge too, and lived into his 80's.

  • I think Oscar was just genetically a big strong black guy inherited from his roots, with Joey as you say he is not getting enough cardio vascular...man he would look the biz is he shed a least 5 or 6 stone...come on Joey

  • @astrium I think he accidentally swallowed a piano when he was a kid which made him extremely fat but also very talented. "play the instrument as if it was a part of you", I believe he came up with that phrase. .

  • @astrium he has lost weight... believe it or not

  • @astrium Get rid of the Hammond Organ and that would be a full 400 lbs off the bat...

  • Tony Monaco over does it with his facial expressions, sticking his tongue out and leaving his little finger up when he plays. Joey D blows Monaco away!

  • so fukkkkkkkkin smooth...... i like him and tony monanaco

  • What's the Drummers name?

  • Carmen Intorre

  • Crazy!!! Awesome!

  • do anyone know who the drummer is?

  • bahahahahahahahahaha

  • He's playin with gadd?? where at? You lucky sob! lol

  • yes he is, and I'm so happy, gonna hear him in 6 hours together with steve gadd.

  • He's a master on that thing! Absolutely superb.

  • I wouldn't mind sharing a few beers and a pizza with Joey et al. Superb stuff! If it makes the hairs on your neck stand up...its working man...and it works for me!

  • bet he cant run as fast as he plays!!!!

  • haha..thats most probably......still great performance..

  • @quagmire475 i dont think anyone can run as fast he plays...

  • @quagmire475 I seriously doubt that haha...

  • @quagmire475: lame, superficial comment! Why not keep it focused on the music and lay off the middle-school mockery about Joey D's weight. Grow up...

  • @democracy8888 Those of us who are truly concerned about his weight do so because we are sincerely concerned about his health and would hate to lose this great talent before his time. quagmire's comment was infantile however.

  • @democracy8888 fuck you astrium is right nobody wants to see him die so early in his life cause he isn't focused on his health. i think he should take a year or so off and try to get into some kind of shape. you can be focused on the music and ones health at the same time...you grow up

  • @LPHbasketball10 Good lord. "F*ck you"?? Nice. Get a life.

  • @LPHbasketball10 Good lord. "F*ck you"?? Nice. Get a life.

  • @democracy8888 Who made you God ? To judge what is a life or what isn't ? Can't you live without attacking some one .He didn't do anything wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • @democracy8888 Dont get pissed man, look at his name, and think... GIGITTY GIGITTY GOO!

  • @quagmire475 HAHAHA!

  • @quagmire475 Yup and we can't run as fast as he plays. Joey is a legend and I see comments about his weight on every one of the videos here. I know people don't always mean harm but I have no problem looking past that. He's an amazing Hammond player!

  • @dregenius Well said my freind. His weight is part of his sensitivity and artistry. He's a beautiful soul, so let the man play.

  • yep.... great.... between him and tony monanco.... i dunno

  • magic

  • I wonder if a crane picks him and the hammond up! No just joking, he's a great hammond player!!!!!!!!!!

    five stars

  • what kinda organ is that?

  • I'm no expert, but I think its a Hammond B3

  • thanks!!

  • Exact, the great and unsurpassed Hammond B3

  • To be more precise, it's a New B3. Very good sounding instrument none the less.

  • It is indeed a New B3, you can hear it from the loud key-klick. Hammond Suzuki stated that the organs sounded that way off-factory..

  • Yup the original B3 had some key clicking. Laurens Hammond thought of it as a defect and tried to fix it, but it was soon a sound people liked so he kept it. As the organ gets older and the contacts are dirty though, it isn't as loud. An original B3 with really clean contacts will have simular key click. I like key click :)

  • Another clue it's the New B-3 is the key travel (deeper), the drawbar base is taller over the keybed than a vintage console, the "start" switch sticks straight up (it's a pitch bender on the New B-3) and the rocker tabs protrude more from the drawbar base. The tone's all there, Hammond-Suzuki got the tone right, and it's a clickmonster, they use real keyswitches like the original in the New B-3.

  • I always feel like the key click is very over pronounced every time i've heard the "new B3"!

  • Yeah, it feels the same way with the XM1 which is kinda the midi module of the New B3, although the Leslie simulation is not as good. The key click is a bit loud but can be turned down to sound more original.

  • zajebiste

  • he makes it look so easy...

  • Oh, and I gotta agree the drummer is not holding up his end. He's OK, but once you've heard Joey playing with somebody like Byron Landham so long it is hard to go back.

  • It's funny- Joey is in the Delaware area once in a while, and when I was working in a Borders Books in Wilmington he came through my line with a bunch of classic Miles Davis CD's. I told him he was the baddest B-3 player in the world. I think he was both surprised and pleased to be recognized in public. Anyway, he burns like a motherfucker.
