I was there on the strip when saw it. I was one of the first-respnders to the crash.  And i feel very sorry for the family of the pilot that died. It reminds me of my experience at Ramstein....

I remember seeing this last year. One guy actually died. It kind of pissed me off though but it also made me sad. It pissed me off because they cancelled the airshow and I only went there for one day. But still sad because he died.

Because the airshow must be cancelled after someone died. It is respectful, and reverent. You can't have the show go on after someone died, it like "Aww to bad... He died..." and then seeing the later end of the show and saying "What a great show". Besides, there are other airshows. I'm glad there wasn't a problem last year. I went to the Great New England Air Show last September, and there was a mishap with the Shockwave (the jet truck), but the driver was unharmed, and the show did go on.

What i know is that the front plane hit the ground while the other rear plane was still airborne and after the first guy hit the ground his plane started to slow down a great deal from drag and brakes and so the other rear guy was about to land and the other guy was going slower and then they collided.

Is there a thorough accident report somewhere? That was a wierd formation when landing. Did the rear pilot not see the front guy or was it an intentional formation landing. Very odd if you consider the caliber of pilots wielding those craft. If it was an intentional formation landing there must have been a malfunction in the rear craft, no?

Precious Metal was one of a few P-51A'a left. A rare "razor back." It was a truly terrible day for everyone involved. Our camp was right across the street from the Warbird's camp. The silence from the normally-rowdy campground was so sad.

One side note, towards the end of the video, the people keeping people out of the way for emergency vehicles were my folks. Custom Aircraft Volunteers and Aviation Explorers. I was just off to the right of the shot.

The P-51A was HAND-BUILT by the builder/pilot, Gerry Beck. It was a brand-new aircraft, not a WW2 original.
