Chappers! Do you have any advice for building up muscle in your fingers on your picking hand? I have been playing for 5 years and I am left handed but play right handed guitars so every day tasks have been done with my left hand leaving my right hand rather unused. Please reply!!
I'm trying to get this down with the Puppets main riff until i can downpick fast enough. i'm starting on an upstroke to get the two downs from the E-A strings but when i get to the double pick on the B note on the a string i cant get my head around which way to pick it to land on the upstroke again for the open E...
@phlorgan That is pretty much the same thing I usually did shortly after learning this: starting pieces of licks with upstrokes in order to force economy picking. Now I just let it flow as smooth as I can, which means if I shouldn't upstroke there, I just don't. I've also better developed my alternate, and only let my economy technique override when I'm picking way too fast ;)
@apalmalarrain Thanks Man, however due to a motorcycle crash I've had a lot of time to practice so I can down downpick it fairly comfortably which is good xD
@phlorgan Is that a good thing D:? I'm glad you don't seem negative about the crash thing!
My case is somewhat similar, as people in my country have been marching on the streets and stuff, asking for changes in education and such... Thing is, my classes stopped during June and I had plenty of time to practice ;D Right now I'm back at school, but for 3 hours less a day than usual.
@phlorgan Heh I forgot the reason I was replying xD... how much time have you been practicing downpicking? I did that for almost a year until I felt my hand was getting tired way too soon, and I was also lacking speed. That was when I attempted alternate and also found this video :P Once you're comfortable with your picking I'd recommend trying as many different ways to pick as possible so you can find one that suits you best for a specific situation :3
@getsum911 at the pentatonic scales with 2 notes per string, you should be able to use legato techniques (hammer-ons, pull-offs) and sweep picking at the same time, which is economy picking in a way
@no1matt Economy is basically alternate and sweep picking combined. You alternate when you are on one string..and you sweep when you cross to the next. Its important to be at least decent in alternate picking to make this work. This will also help you relax your wrist and hand in general....so economy of motion+relaxation*economy picking=lots of sonic goodness and tone bliss....as Chappers would say..hehehe.
@Dreamdancer11 Thanks dude! :) Do you think it may help my sweeping technique? i find it harder playing sweeping sections (3/4 string (sometimes with tapping)) slow whilst keeping perfectyly in time so i was wondering if it might help.
So, I did primarily start working on my alternate picking, but I'm nowhere near being really fast at it... but when I try to do this, it's as if I have to stop for a second before I do the down stroke and I feel as if I need to do an up stroke.
Obviously if I keep practising it I'll get better, but do you think I should stick to alternate picking?
@tehStevee Just stick to what feels best or more natural to you, every guitarist has different ways of picking , look at Zakk Wylde's or Marty Friedman's picking techniques for instance , its all about personal preference ;)
That's gonna be Alex Lee from bonded by blood. He can turn a volume knob and slide a pickup a selector faster than any other guitarist i've ever seen. :P
The thing petrucci says about alternate is that the seperate movements for each note can give you a better sense of timing, it's hard to time the notes on consecutive strings when economy picking, but that's the challenge, and I generally find the problem is not picking the second of the economy picked notes too early, so the problem is being too fast? Not a bad problem IMO ! XD
The only negative thing about economy picking that I can think of is that you can lose track of the beat; with alternate picking you always know if you're picking on a beat (down-stroke) or not (up-stroke).
If you're not OC about that shit, then you should probably use economy picking.
@TehUberCyberBeast you dont lose track of the beat.you are just letting gravity control you istead of the opposite. When you cross strings with that sweeping motion its very tempting to overdo it.If you concentrate on the beat and not try to play as fast as you can you wont have any problem. If you change the need for speed for the...necessity for precision.....you ll be fine.
Hold the pick as soft as you can. Focus on the feeling in your pick. Try and imagine the pick as being part of your body. Don't grip it tight because it's going to bounce of the strings.
That's sound weird if your Dutch... Use Google Translate to translate "pick" or "pik" from Dutch into English and you'll know why.
I really like your videos though. I like the way you mix great tips with a sense of humor, keeps it fun to watch and practice!
This is the most clever of way of picking in my opinion. Pay attention to the right hands of the guitarists who pick like that. They seem their right arms are not going to fly out of their bodies like the ones who use alternate picking.KKKKK
@jrzeca economy picking is very very important to learn i agree. but i think it should only be used when necessary as the sound isnt as heavy as alternate pickin.
@mugentenshinmonsect I personally never use alternate picking even when I am asked to do so. e.g. now I am taking a guitar course in a school in London and I need to learn just because they says it is important. I play any single lick using economy and the only difference is because it sounds smother than alternate which I personally prefer. It is pretty much a matter of taste. Even when I play rock it is nice. Listen to " The great explorer" by Frank Gambale it is a exemple of rock economy
uhmm...I dunno what the hell is going on o.O im confused...what IS econimy picking? is it downpicking? UGH! I think ill stick with what Im doing already O.o
@TheAmatuerGuitarist I believe its like sweep picking. if you were to mute the string with whatever hand u use the fretboard on and with the other hand swoop the pick down all the strings and straight up. Thats just an example. The trick is getting your fretboad hands to play the right notes..... Hope that makes since... Kinda hard to explaine and its taking forever for this video to load...
i duno i just go 2 the next string i never even thought about what type of picking it is or if i do 2 down in a row i just get 2 the next string somtimes u gota skip over a string but whatever u just gota get it done man
Very good lesson all types of picking is what makes it fun learn them all n combine on the fly be prepared to use all techniqes anytime anywhere but for straight runs up and down scales this makes alot of sense
that last lick is awsume and it doesnt work right if u start normaly with a down pick.. u have to start with a up pick and it is faster and smoother . great lesson .. cheers
this video saved my life, i watched a long time ago when i was just starting to play, when i had no idea what economy picking was, and it has made my process of learning sweep paterns and fast runs so much easier, thank you sooo much
What???? This is soo confusing! I keep replaying this video & I still don't understand what the difference is! How do you go down down up instead of up down up??? All of you who are getting ready to write comments to me about how much of an idiot I am, you may just go ahead & do that! I'm ready for YOU!
@qwecars I just did some research... I think I get it now! Turns out I'm naturally an alternate picker. I was trying to play using economy picking and it's just fricken HARD! I have to think too hard every time I go down a string!
could u do a tutorial on how u hole your pick? like with how many fingers, what fingers, where you keep your hand, picking motion, etc, etc. ive been playing for a couple of years, and thats sumthing i;ve always had trouble with. the picking method that came naturally to me seems to be..well...awful!
Its stupid to flow over strings isnt it? O.o Maybe you scratch it and playing a note you do not want or you will be hindered by the string or whatever.... Teachers saying its unprofessionel are a bit... stubborn arent they? xD
For all you people out there that REALLY want to sweep but can't, by economy picking everything you know, your fingers will get used to the sweeping movements and therefore make sweeping easier. Sweep picking is economy picking. Thats how I think i learned it so quick.
i tend to just pick as little as possible, as in for 3 note per string phrases, i would just pick once. i know this makes it sound a bit more smooth and legato if you will, but is there any reason more people dont do this besides the sound?
try playing your scales dead slow for 20 min but still using minimum movements like you are forced to do when playing for ex at 200 bpm. Also check your body to be 100% relaxed and fret with minimal force the strings.try it for a month and you ll be blazing in no time.
In a nutshell use alternate picking when you have to...and economy when you can.Its good to know both cause they have slightly dif sound.Alternate has that galloping effect while economy is more smooth(legato like almost). No right or wrong here. Its what do you want to sound like.
I absolutely suck at alternate picking. economy picking has always come naturally for me. someone once told me that economy picking was an unprofessional way of picking. thats a load of crap! picking is picking!!! it dosent matter how you do it.
i used to too and so i didn't but when i got to more advanced and faster things i simply didn't have the speed or stamina to do it just as downpicking and really hadn't developed the alternate picking skill. point is that its good to practice anyways so when you need to do it you can later on :)
@testament214 Same here. Anyone who says it's unprofessional just isn't using their brain. They move their hand all the way around a string and then pick it from the opposite side? It's idiotic.
@testament214 i think that economy picking is a more professional way to pick...jump over strings is noob shit. i'm absolutely with you, i suck at alternative picking but economy picking...is more technical to the eyes and ears.
@testament214 well you know the way the michael angelo batio says it is that economy picking even sounds smoother and more fluid than alternate picking.. i wouldn't say either is wrong... but i wouldnt say that picking is picking either?... but if you're an economy picker you must find sweeping easier than other players no?
@exatone Yeah, it is a different sound. I personally like Yngwie's technique, but that's cause I like 'feel' players like David Gilmour, Mark Knofler, Richie Blackmore etc etc, and I do think Yngwie's smooth picking and 'natural' approach, puts him in that category. I'm not a fan of the 'technique' approach, like John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse etc. To me it has a much more unnatural 'guitar exercises' sound. Obviously just my opinion too.
@testament214 that someone probably found economy a bit hard to control, it sounded sloppy and shit and they declared the 'technique' unprofessional rather than their execution of it!
I think its nice to have someone show this very simple technique. I think its embarrasing, though, that todays musicians need someone to tell them whats the easiest way to pick. Todays "musicians" want tabs for everything, even though its a simple a pentatonic scale thats played. If you cant hear the notes in that case, you shouldnt be tryin to learn those things, they come naturally.
I for myself am absolutely sure that there is NO proper way to pick. If it works for you, its fine.
the bit around 3:40 where you're playing the first four notes of the C scale and you say "I don't know either." I know what it is. It's the theme from the Addams Family, and it's actually played in G major, but you played it right because G is a relative (I know thats the wrong word) key of C. Awesome video Chappers.
I know that A minor is the RELATIVE key of C major...... it's just that there is a term for that....and I forgot it....like alternate key or something... ugh i gotta brush up on my theory....
LOL tremelo picking and alternate picking are the same exact thing its just that tremelo picking means you are alternate picking really fast. Economy is basically just tremelo picking but a little different.
tremolo picking is alternate picking the same note as fast as you can. so rule that out. then if you listen to what he is saying and if you work on it, economy picking is faster.
Thanks, I realized a few days ago what tremolo picking is, but thanks anyways. I always thought tremolo p. was an alternate plus the strength of your arm.
have one ever broken your volume knob?, I mean holy shit that's fast

its funny how the majority of people that say eco.picking is inferior to alt.picking are absolute nobodies.
if you watch interviews with the greats on this topic they always say the same thing.
LEARN BOTH.
even if they exclusively use alt picking they never act like snobs towards eco.picking.
its always the utube guitar snobs that will say eco.picking is a cheap way to play.
in truth, knowing both makes you a proficient and well rounded musician

i tend to just pick as little as possible, as in for 3 note per string phrases, i would just pick once. i know this makes it sound a bit more smooth and legato if you will, but is there any reason more people dont do this besides the sound?
Toaster121 1 year ago
what the heck is circular picking¿?¿?
DarkTwilightGuitar 1 year ago
Exactly what it sounds like. Picking two or more strings, usually 3, alternating in a circular type movement.
WORLDWaR358 1 year ago
alternate or economy... i need to learn circular picking. i feel like i can't get any faster without it.
kcmet79 1 year ago
try playing your scales dead slow for 20 min but still using minimum movements like you are forced to do when playing for ex at 200 bpm. Also check your body to be 100% relaxed and fret with minimal force the strings.try it for a month and you ll be blazing in no time.
denisgiann 1 year ago
interesting... i'll stick to alternate tho.
MParseface38 2 years ago 2
In a nutshell use alternate picking when you have to...and economy when you can.Its good to know both cause they have slightly dif sound.Alternate has that galloping effect while economy is more smooth(legato like almost). No right or wrong here. Its what do you want to sound like.
denisgiann 2 years ago 2
I absolutely suck at alternate picking. economy picking has always come naturally for me. someone once told me that economy picking was an unprofessional way of picking. thats a load of crap! picking is picking!!! it dosent matter how you do it.
testament214 2 years ago 64
i used to too and so i didn't but when i got to more advanced and faster things i simply didn't have the speed or stamina to do it just as downpicking and really hadn't developed the alternate picking skill. point is that its good to practice anyways so when you need to do it you can later on :)

@testament214 jeff beck only used his thumb haha
julsjm911 1 year ago
@testament214 Same here. Anyone who says it's unprofessional just isn't using their brain. They move their hand all the way around a string and then pick it from the opposite side? It's idiotic.
Dooality 1 year ago
@testament214 i think that economy picking is a more professional way to pick...jump over strings is noob shit. i'm absolutely with you, i suck at alternative picking but economy picking...is more technical to the eyes and ears.

@testament214 well you know the way the michael angelo batio says it is that economy picking even sounds smoother and more fluid than alternate picking.. i wouldn't say either is wrong... but i wouldnt say that picking is picking either?... but if you're an economy picker you must find sweeping easier than other players no?
soundslikedeathvox 1 year ago
@testament214 eric johnson does it. it's completely professional.

@testament214 yes but the sound of the alt pick is absolutely better...
for example..
the sound of PAUL FUCKING GILBERT's alt pick is awesome, i don't liket he sound of Malmsteen...!!!
but it's only my personal opinion!!
Sorry for my english!!
exatone 1 year ago
@exatone Yeah, it is a different sound. I personally like Yngwie's technique, but that's cause I like 'feel' players like David Gilmour, Mark Knofler, Richie Blackmore etc etc, and I do think Yngwie's smooth picking and 'natural' approach, puts him in that category. I'm not a fan of the 'technique' approach, like John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Steve Morse etc. To me it has a much more unnatural 'guitar exercises' sound. Obviously just my opinion too.

@Johann759 I guess your ears are better than mine because I dont hear a difference at all.
testament214 9 months ago
@testament214 that someone probably found economy a bit hard to control, it sounded sloppy and shit and they declared the 'technique' unprofessional rather than their execution of it!
Rrrrobbo 9 months ago
@Rrrrobbo Haha, your probably right.
testament214 9 months ago

Awesome video Chappers.
myucussman 2 years ago
A min is the relative key of C...Emin is the relative minor of G maj....
philbertfwog 2 years ago
I know that A minor is the RELATIVE key of C major...... it's just that there is a term for that....and I forgot it....like alternate key or something... ugh i gotta brush up on my theory....
myucussman 2 years ago
Do you mean that A Aeolian (aka minor) is a MODE of C Major? Apart from that there's nothing else you could mean...
philbertfwog 2 years ago
That's precisely what i mean! thanks! god i couldn't think of the word if it killed me!
myucussman 2 years ago
@myucussman Yes, A minor is the relative minor of C major.

which is faster: tremolo picking, alternate picking or economy picking ?
faig1958 2 years ago
LOL tremelo picking and alternate picking are the same exact thing its just that tremelo picking means you are alternate picking really fast. Economy is basically just tremelo picking but a little different.
SVBarnard 2 years ago
Is not the same, when you are doing tremelo/tremolo picking, you are using the strength in your arm.
faig1958 2 years ago
Yeah economy is just modified alternate picking that I would stringly reccomend learning as it will help with some shred style solos
rckr68 2 years ago
tremolo picking is alternate picking the same note as fast as you can. so rule that out. then if you listen to what he is saying and if you work on it, economy picking is faster.
SlayerFan231 2 years ago
@SlayerFan231
Thanks, I realized a few days ago what tremolo picking is, but thanks anyways. I always thought tremolo p. was an alternate plus the strength of your arm.
faig1958 2 years ago
Look at this "paul gilbert fast licks and teaches pick angle"
katschrowski 2 years ago
tremolo is fast alternate picking but on one string, alternative is fast but economy, when mastered, is faster and more economical hence the name
Vexion193 2 years ago
No, tremolo is fast alternate picking but on ONE NOTE *
