I've always resented the allegation that we Neanderthals 'died out' .. or that we aren't particularly bright.

My own family are Neanderthal, both sides, and on my Dad's side the family surname is actually Neanderthal if you go back five generations to when my great, great grandfather Bob Neanderthal first came to America through Ellis Island ..but changed the name because it was thought to be 'too ethnic'.

Kinda like our Senator John "Kerrry"'s grandfather Mr. Cohen/Kohn.

Interesting story--Neanderthals may very well have been more intelligent than homo sapiens, and the REASON why they died out was not so much because they were dumb, but because humans were 95% as intelligent (close enough), but (being smaller both in body and brain) required FAR less energy--in other words, we won because our intelligence-energy ratio was superior, more efficient than the Neanderthals, and we out-competed and outnumbered them.

But Eddie Izzard is still fucking hilarious.

Eddie's pretty funny, I like his dinosaur thing, too. Neanderthals were not that stupid, its actually a stereotype. Their brains were bigger toward the back and ours toward the front, and the frontal area is where you find innovative thinking. They probably had very good memory and were good in other areas, but not for inventing new things.

I know, I was originally just going to say our TV is already neanderthal like, and maybe it's because we do have some neanderthal genes, but as I study evolution, I couldn't just leave it that. lol

It's been shown genetically that non-Africans do have some neanderthal ancestry, varying from 1% to 5% or even more. But they developed fire, clothing, basic language, spears and even glue before homosapiens even existed. The only "pure" homosapiens are Africans.

The only reason we know about H.Erectus and H.Neanderthalis having fire is because the evidence was luckily preserved. We thought H.Habilis invented tools but even A.Afarensis used very simple stone tools. My guess is they noticed the spark from flint but what they did with that is anyone's guess. Neanders lasted 500million years, they must have done something right.
