  • You can just tell that Michael had a kind heart and a passion for music. He and his kind are missed these days. RIP.

  • Hedges=Genius

  • I think I like the WHO version better, but I would not bet my life on it. This is a pretty good cover, with it's own style.

  • unbelievable grooves and harmonies

  • @ThorXMK

Your name is the giveaway -- you DO realize this isn't Anthrax, right?

  • one of the few people that I never met who I really really miss, with all my heart,,,,

  • Cool!!!

  • You guys make me so mad, this is what you type in the comments? What about the awful introduction! That was worth torches and an angry mob.

  • Michael and Pete .... chasm's apart in ability. Pete plays guitar. Michael WAS the guitar.

  • sounds a lot like pete t

  • All those years of listening to other people's music, then I discovered Michael.

He was MY discovery & finally I had someone I could pass along to all my friends that was met with much appreciation by everyone.

Figures. Anything I like disappears, 'always been that way.

Though the sun was shining, I believe it rained for a week when I read of his passing.

    The best leave us early.

I recall a verse calling Him a 'Jealous God'. Seems it's true as he takes away the best to be with him too soon.

  • Michael hedges, you're my guitar hero!!

  • I was so psyched to find a video of Michael covering this because it has long been one of the favorite of my audio recordings of his.

The cheezy intro reeks of the 80's even though it's 1990... I guess some of that decade leaked through!

    RIP Michael... miss you.

  • You have an audio recording of this? Can you post it anywhere? I'd love to have it

  • I could email it to you ... ?

  • it was like that until about 92 or 93 then we shot all the guys who like the 80's in the head

  • especially in 1990. The cheeziness continued until around 1995.

  • Can anyone rip this song off of this video or know where I can find it. I tried looking on iTunes but they dont have it.. I really love him and I love this song with a passion.

  • I can rip this song for you? Do you want me to?

  • yes please! =) That would be lovely.

  • Comment removed

  • okay i sent you a message.

Ugh! i wish it came out here. I looked everywhere for it.

  • Totally badass cover. I love The Who's version, but he Hedges makes it his own in an awesome way.

  • This is GENIUS !!!

  • OK? You mean one of the great geniuses in the history of the guitar.

  • thanks for posting this, michael hedges was one of the most talented musicians ever, may he rest in peace :)

  • Really cool guitar.

  • I saw him open for Crosby Still and Nash one time. He was absolutely amazing. May he RIP.

  • Yes, he was amazing. May he RIP. Thanks for posting.

  • I heard this guy does a mean cover of Eminence Front, so I looked it up.

At first, I thought the tv show's intro was the actual song.

I was thinking "wtf... this doesn't sound good at all", lol

  • Omg I just discovered that he covered this song. AMAZING

  • Wow...pretty eminent :)

  • i love the who,but this is quite amazing

  • good... but not as good as the who. the best part of pete's version is the guitar solo in the intro and hedges didn't match that

  • But Pete's version doesn't have Michael Hedges.

  • If one has to choose between vocals from Pete and Michael I'm sorry to rain on your parade buddy but it's Michael all day everyday.

  • I say i like this version better than the who.

i love the affects and the acoustic.

  • Thanks for posting this. He was so amazing.

  • pretty crazy version,but i like it,i must say,

  • oh the special effects rule!!! Im amazed

  • amazing, Michael is a great guitarist/vocalist. RIP.

  • Damn, I wish there was a video of him playing his electric harp guitar. I so wanna see that.. :(

  • Hedges was on a whole other level. What more proof of God do you need than to hear and watch this guy play? This is more than a mortal man in action. Seriously, Hedges was not like you and me. He was better.

  • I saw michael in seattle with leo kottke...was three hours of goosebumps

oh yeah...forget tha tabulature...just play your guitar!!!!

  • greenthumbguy1, You are right! I saw them play together too and it was just incredible. I went to see Kottke, hadn't yet heard of Hedges. Hedges opened the show and he opened my mind. I just could not believe the talent he had in spades. I was thrilled and jealous at the same time. I still am.

  • R.I.P. mike

  • does anyone have tabs for this?

  • As said before.

    Quiet everybody. God is playing.

  • Much much bigger than the Who is his effect on my soul

  • Tim Robbins should play Hedges in a film because he really looks like him.

    Hedges = Underrated legend.

  • Omigod!

This was the one ,the Japanese TV station,NHK had produced and boadcast to the Japanese people, but it was in the midnight.

For me this was like a Revelation, thanks to type3secretion

  • I absolute love eminence front, and I really loved Michael's cover. He looks like he's having such fun! Thats one thing I love about Michael Hedge's, he was really full of life, and so passionate about playing music, he's a fantastic example of what music can do to people, with a little faith, he inspires me. A genius, it's a shame that some people doubt his incredible talents and call this shit, if you don't like it, accept the fact that people like different music and get over it

  • Reading previous comments, I think it says alot about Michael's talent that some of you can't believe its just one person creating such a lovely, textured sound.

  • I really do not know how you could call this "horrible". Michael was one of a kind, a master of his craft who inspires me far more than any living artist, someone who deserves your respect. "Let's hope this man never happens again." Well, lets hope comments like that never happen again.

  • Hedges was a phenomenal talent. Thanks!

  • these weirdos saying 'horrible' etc can take a flying plunge. if you cant respect this or indeed any of michaels work you seriously need to rethink your musical taste, or preferably just not associate with music EVER again. this is a great cover, i personally like it for more than the original.

  • Well, coming from a hardcore Who fan I can dig this. It doesn't showcase Michael's skills very well. Nonetheless, his vocals do cut it (Pete doesn't have the best voice-that said hours after listening to Who Came First).

  • I really like this cover. If Pete Townshend can respect this guy, then I think I can too.

  • right on

  • did anyone see the world trade center in the opening? Very ominous, it looked like there was a face in the tower.

  • you were stoned at the time when you wrote this comment?... but i kinda see where your comming from

  • he looks slighty like tim robbins

  • Sick Sick Sick

  • jeremyrollins. They were famous for big amps. yes Out of tune singing and lack of talent? I don't think so. Entwistle, Daltrey, and Townshend sing almost perfectly in tune through the entire Live at Leeds album.Entwisle was regarded as one of the best bassists of all time and Townshend isn't exactly an amateur either. The Who,in their prime, had enough talent and energy to put every other band to shame. Even in his 60's Townshend could easily kick your ass. Stop saying such ignorant crap!

  • That's all him. Any musician who has used sound reinforcement should have heard of stereo rigs, bi-amping etc.

  • You are talking bull shit man, he does a great job playing this song.

  • no he doesn't. and to call Hedges an idiot is pure ignorance!

  • You sir are an absolute fool.

  • you are a fool for saying such things.

  • "I feel I can always hear his heart when he plays. He respected my playing too, and that simply thrills me." - Pete Townshend on Michael Hedges

  • "He will never be forgotten as one of those who respected, absorbed and yet rose above all trends to create accessible and commercial music for a new age." - Pete Townshend on Michael Hedges

  • Type III secretion system (T3SS)

It is a molecular syringe through which a bacterium can inject proteins into eukaryotic cells. This secretion system was first discovered in Y. pestis and showed that toxins could be injected directly from the bacterial cytoplasm into the cytoplasm of its host's cells rather than simply into the extracellular medium. - wikipedia

  • Hedges was enough of a genius that he could also be humble. He was so good he threw away the pose.

  • @twsuits

    man, are you obtuse

  • that's funny...

  • He was absolutely several steps ahead.

  • does anyone know who played bass in the background? the tone, its amazing. fits so well with the acoustic guitar. had shivers running down my spine.

  • I think it's just Michael by himself.

  • it's not - I'm a musician myself, I know when I hear a guitar, or guitar and bass. there was somebody in the background, or off-stage playing bass, and it sounds brilliant.

  • zaoc, it's 100% Michael Hedges you are hearing in this video. I was at the Bottom Line the night they were taping this for Japan's NHK network. He performed completely solo that evening. The first time I saw him perform Aerial Boundaries live my heart sank -- "Ah, he has some kind of taped accompaniment!"-- but when I realized that every note was emanating from his single guitar, I became a fan for life.

  • zaoc, educate yourself. There are plenty of resources online where you can read up about Michael Hedges' various guitars, pickups, and tunings--not to mention his technique. I saw Michael Hedges perform live at small venues like The Bottom Line and bigger houses like, er, Carnegie Hall, and a half a dozen places in-between.

  • LOL I just know what i have seen and heard live several times, and am not basing my assumptions on a low-fidelity YouTube recording.

  • There is a wealth of information about his guitars, open tunings, strings, stage rigs, etc. at nomadland dot com (thanks, btw, to type3secretion for posting these videos and linking to Michael's site). There's probably nothing there that will settle this debate -- but it's a great site neveretheless.

  • zaoc, all the sounds are from the guitar, the sound is full because his guitar setup separates the highs from the lows, he uses a magnetic pickup for the lows, and a transducer (installed inside the guitar) for the highs, so he put effects on the bass but the highs stays clean, at 2:00 you can see clearly when he turns on the effect for the bass output, also note that the bass notes occur mostly on the downstrokes. I have the tab, the tuning is (low to high) Db F C Eb F Bb

  • No one else is playing DUDE DUh?? Hellooo???

  • where can i get the tab?

  • zaoc, That absolutely is Michael Hedges on his own. He was phenomenal and known for sounding like two or three guitarists at once. His dexterity was truly a gift. I saw him live and there was no one else on stage and nothing looped or prerecorded. That you can't comprehend that this is possible is no surprise to me. If I didn't see how he played I would have said no way too. But I had the pleasure of watching him up close. That is all Michael Hedges. The best. Peace.

  • @zoac, Watch all the Hedges videos and think again... There's hardly any sound of multiple guitars on this one compared to other songs of his where he sounds like 3 guitars easily... He was just a master of the guitar yo. And he used bass strings on his guitar if he wanted a lower sound, or so I've read in an interview he took.

  • Never used a biamped, or stereo, or freq crossover device or split effect or multi-amped rig before - have we? I'm a musician too who plays professionaly-- whoopee.

  • I'm also a musician, and you're talking crap. Michael used original tunings to create that inimitable sound. And this is definitely solo. Check out the rest of his stuff. As a guitar and bass player, I can see perfectly well that he's hitting those bass notes, and he was famous for sounding like he had a whole band behind him.

  • Michael used bass strings on his guitar when he had to tune real low, and when he was accompanied by other musicians, they were on stage with Michael. Ever heard of Michael Manring? A bassist who used to collaborate with Hedges. I too am a musician and I assure you, It's all Him in this vid

  • It's not actually. But I don't blame you for assumin' it is, cause Michael was pure genious

  • @zaoc

im new to this video, and i'm sure you've realized by now it's all Hedges by himself...right? That's why he's rated perhaps the greatest acoustic guitarist ever...

  • Wow, i also have only heard "The Who" prefrom this song, my god, im very impressed. nice post. be sure im going to search more for this god of his time.

  • Car accident

  • i never heard of this guy,but he is good.how did he die?

  • You never know when death's gonna come. Prime example here.

  • Michael was one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.

  • I kick myself in the ass as I had 2 seperate times I could have seen him live and did not. My loss deep. The man was the music.

  • Absolutely brilliant, i only heard the who play it but this is great.

  • Michae Hedges what a loss to us all the day you died. The master of your own musical domain. RIP Bro'.
