I've seen several videos of people playing like this - just using the left hand to tap notes on the upper part of the neck like a Chapman Stick - my question is, though, how the hell do you DO it? I've been playing bass for many years, and I'd really like to learn this. Do you just hit the notes with your right hand like you're doing a hammer-on, only doing it really hard? Also, is that some sort of bass capo on your neck?
@nickca420: Thank you so much for your comment! That's not a capo but just a hair scrunchie to prevent strings to produce unwanted overtones. If you want to learn more about the basics of tapping on bass (including the reason behind the scrunchie), I'd suggest you to check the first videos I ever posted to YouTube: A six-part tapping mini-course (you can find them by visiting my channel and browsing through the videos I've posted (look for the oldest ones).
Dear Alvabass: This is one of the finest versions I have heard or seen. Your execution and articulation are superb. And, although Stu is totally fantastic, yours is perhaps musically more melodic. Beautiful job.
It depends on the way you setup your instrument. The higher the action (the distance between the strings and the fingerboard), the lesser the buzz. The action on my basses isn't super low, but not high anyway. Thank you for your comment!
It's sort of thinking like a pianist: Practicing each hand separately and then putting all together. For some basics on the tapping technique I'd suggest you to check my "tapping mini-course" videos (six in total). Let me know if you need further assistance.
No. If you go to musiciansfriend(.)com and look in the "electric bass guitars" section for the Music Man name, you'll find them easily. Or go to music-man(.)com(/)dealers(/) (without parentheses) and you'll find a dealer in the U.S.
Not strictly necessary, but it's a good and valid aid to clean up the sound. Check /watch?v=bZDlQ8Z-_4E&fmt=18 for an explanation. Thank you for your comment! :)
It's not really playing two different things with each hand. If you look at the music on the piano there's two staffs, one bass and one treble. If you put the two together right on top of one another, each note fits in. Im not sure if that explains it. So what im saying is its gonna be alot harder practicing one part and then the other. rather than practicing both at the same time. o.0
I don't understand, the bass and treble clefs have different notes (EGBDF (treble) and AFDBG (base)on the lines). You can't just put them on the same clef unless you make it two complete octaves long- no, that doesn't work. It is much easier to learn when you practice both parts separately and then work at combining them, trust me. The point is: He is playing two different things with his hands. He is playing the bass and the piano parts at the same time.
That's exactly what I said, I understand. What I'm saying is that just because they use the same note system doesn't mean they are the same things. He is playing two completely different parts, as I explained above. I play several instruments. It sounds like you have never had to learn both hands of a song on the piano (Then you would know that learning both at the same time instead of separately makes it much harder).
I don't understand. I'm talking about the process taken when learning a song on a piano. I'm saying that it is infinitely harder to practice both hands at the same time than to practice each hand separately. You can't argue with that, you are wrong. Sight reading does not apply at all to our discussion train. Sight reading is possible, sure, but so is being able to play the song without even seeing notes (from ear). Both cases have no bearing on my argument. You are just scrambling to be correct.
It's my fault that you don't understand. I should have wrote "learning" rather than "practicing" since it's true that practicing each part separately would help it become more consistent.
You've won the youtube discussion battle..... haha these things get really heated. Shouldn't have gotten involved.
Thank you for your comment, man! I have a MySpace account (Alvabass), but you won't find any music there. Sadly, creativity is not something I've been blessed with. Thank you again! :)
I can't remember right now, man. I started practicing this stuff in late 1991 (And still not happy with the results), but one thing's for sure: It took LOTS of patience and perseverance. Anyway, the first part of the process is learning each hand's part separately, but learn it so well you don't have to think about it. Then start putting both hands together at a very slow pace. Let me know anytime you think I may help, man. Thank you for your comment! :)
I've never used tabs, man. Stu's instructional videos (specially the first one) were my main resource. Actually, I transcribed "Linus & Lucy" the way I play it. I know that tabs can be found at stuarthamm dot net, but never tried them. Again, I can't tell how many times I pressed my VCR's "rewind" button watching "Slap, Pop & Tap For The Bass" and "Deeper Inside The Bass". :)
Thank you for your comment! That's a hair scrunchie which helps cleaning the sound for certain tapping stuff. You'll find a further explanation in my tapping mini-course videos. Thank you again!
Hey Alva. I loved your interpretation on this. Do you think it could be possible for you to make an audio mp3 file of this so I could listen to it on my iPod?

I'm trying to get into tapping, I had been playing thumb-strum ( The few of us that do), and I saw a video by Danny Growl and I decided I wanted to do it..
Its kind of difficult, but simple riffs sounds really cool when you play them fast.
Well, basically the scrunchie is an aid to get a cleaner sound when tapping with your right hand if your left hand is so busy that can't prevent extra ringing from the strings. Try hitting a note by tapping with your right hand alone and no sound from your amp. Then play it again, but this time keep your left hand dampening the strings. You'll notice a big difference, and that's what the scrunchie is for.
oooh i hate it when that happens, when u dont mute the headstock side and u hear two notes from one tap... WOW i think I will go buy a scrunchie right now :D thanks man

It's straight 4/4 for both hands, man. The thing is (and that's what puzzled me when I got to listen Guaraldi's version): All the phrases start on the last eighth note of the measure. It is a VERY syncopated piece.
Sweet. I've wanted to learn this for a long time, any tips on how to learn it? I'm not very good at tapping, it's something I need to work on, but I'm not sure how.

Have you worked on tapping bassics? I think my "tapping mini-course" set of videos on YouTube may help, man. Please let me know.
