@coltranesaxIV 6/8 n 6/4 are the same thing, its jus however u wanna write it. I think its more a 3/4, but its up 2 u it could b written in 6/8 or 6/4
If Michael were to have been given all the time in the world rather than die young, he could've mastered music to the highest level that is literally humanly possible.
@theguybelowmesuxbig That's just racist. Whites don't deserve to all be tarred with the same brush any more than blacks do and anyway, there's no such thing as pure racial strain....
@atomas11 Maybe so, but compositions like Three Quartets are rare even for geniuses like Chick. Likewise, the magic of that session is not easily recaptured, either.
If this is not the most potent collection of the most musical people in the world, then I know nothing - God bless these genius musicians and RIP Michael Brecker XX
It took my ear some adjusting to get use to Brecker. But I understand and appreciate where he was comming from. Everything Brecker did on the sax was honest and genuine.
Wow...Brecker. One of the all time great musicians. Deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Duke, Satchmo, Bird, Miles and Trane. A beautiful man, truly missed.
Now let's just think about that shall we? Chick, Michael, Steve and Eddie - can you think of a more awesome-on-a-galactic-scale combination? I would have loved to have been there. At least I have the vinyl.
who ever postet this must have MORE :-) It´s interesting to see chick´s face during his playing. He kind of he realizes thats he´s tought a masterlesson of mike. In a positive way of course.
I'm glad I finally came around to this video. Thanks for posting. I learned a lot and even dug some comments. Way to go everybody! Mike's music still lives. Revel in it.
Was this filmed at the Blue Note in NYC? If so, i think I was actually at this. I sat right off the stage behind Steve Gadd. I know they did the "Three Quartets" thing back a while ago. I remember it was mind-blowing live.
This is nearly exactly what he was doing. In concert pitch, it was 4th overtone on a Bb, getting him the D (Bb original note, Bb first overtone, F second, Bb third, D fourth). In fact, his 'vibrato' was basically going between the 4th and 5th overtone (the 5th being the F concert, a minor third above the D), which you can hear most near the end of the note.
Thank you, dave. As a tenor saxophonist, I have become interested in that techniqe. Do you or anyone else know of what books I can get to study high harmonics/overtones/altissimo?
yeah, that's the cannon... And you really should warm up doing overtones, it's not just for altissimo stuff, just to get you to get a better control and ultimately a better sound.
This is gonna sound crazy, but sometimes he sounds like he's playing synthetic reeds...like the frequency is consistant w/ a fibracell...listen to "Every day I thank you"
from: klaurent13 I play these things with great success and I'd be suprised if it wasn't a synthetic reed...Played the same reed for 6 months w/ no change in sound. Just a thought.
Think about it--mouthpiece also has a lot to do with it. His mouthpiece was custom made specifically to fit his chops, and he found out different things to do with that.
Wow amazing! Michael Brecker could really play on his horn even when he messes up. His tone sounds very open but controlled in that he never loses his sound when he messes up. That is one of the qualities that identifies a great musicians like Michael Brecker.
When he goes "ah" he's just expressing NOT a mistake, but he's enjoying the groove the band is creating. And when he says "oh shit" lol oh well. All musician's make mistakes, but he doesn't let that get in his way.
yes, jaywbe, but there are notes that sound like crap if you don't play them the right way... like a note not in the cord a half step up from a note that is in the chord.
Well, tuhsdxas, that isn't a wrong note if you know where you're going with it. It's called playing out, and players post 1970s really embellished and introduced a lot more of that exploration to just get a certain sound. In a literal sense, it's wrong, theoretically; but in jazz and LIFE, it's not wrong or right; it's just want YOU want to play.
that's kind of what meant. I said certian notes sound bad if not treated right. I gave one example of how "wrong note" could be technically defined. The first thing a lot of musicians do is play these notes in their own way. I like to
probably 2001...a series of concerts at Blue Note NYC to celebrate Chick Corea's 60th birthday...Check the original album recorded in 1980 (if I am not mistaken). It's exactly the same group...Michael Brecker sounded incredible back there already and Chick solos were phenomenal.
obviously the ORIGINAL version is from 1980 (not 70's, sorry you're not certain). But I believe the question made was how long the show in THIS video was recorded. That was Chick Corea's 60th birthday...in 2001.
truly a musical genius....
