Sorry for people who don't like this, but space is the future, not to sound cheesy, its the next big frontier. It takes little hops into space to get the ball rolling. Virgin are only exploiting the rich in the same way as the first companies offer trans atlantic travel on cruise ships, the first wave of aircraft that could cross the atlantic, look how much concord used to charge for supersonic flight? This is no different.
Woop woop UK leading the space race! this is really good that virgin are doing this now maybe more airlines and other company's will try and compete with each other, which is what we need to make a big leap in to space travel
At least one of the very first passengers has got to go in a Darth Vader or stormtrooper costume and capture it all on HD. If I'm not mistaken, the X15 made 400,000 ft.(75 mi.) above the Earth's surface decades back, before quickly descending. At least Branson is going to give his passengers a more extended time to enjoy the view and take a few pictures.

I guess some people don't know that NASA stole the design for the space shuttle from Canada's Avro Arrow, huh? Yeah, they're real pioneers... In reality Virgin Galactic have surpassed NASA by a long shot with much more advanced, practical, and green technology. Look up Spaceshiptwo's feathering technique and you'll see what I mean. Besides, why defend NASA when they've publicly stated that they have no intention of commercial space flight. They only care about their own means.
@661Sunshine are you stupid? NASA have done lodes of things since the moon landing and if they had the funding they would have done even more.
Of the top of my head Voyager 1 and 2 traveled to every known outer planet and and moon to take photos and they're now at the end of our solar system. Viking 1 and 2 landed on Mars and took orbital pictures of every spot on Mars. Visiting Mars now would cost around $40 billion and the US government cut down on NASA's spending budget due to the economy.
@661Sunshine You do realise that all virgin is doing is giving people 5 minutes of free falling?
NASA already do this with regular planes but instead of a 5 minute weightlessness for 200000 thousand pounds they give you 40-60 25 second weightless sessions for only 2000.
So it is 100 times cheaper and in total you get 20 minutes of weightlessness.
If your so reach that you don't care how about you pay NASA to take you to orbit?
Virgin is just the poor richmans space trip NASA are the real deal..
@Interleap Yes mate. But, he is using this project as a smock screen. The end game is to take over satellite delivery. Satellites are getting smaller? No. But, the stuff on them is. So you just build constellations of small satellites rather than one big one and boost them from low earth orbit. If you do that why do you need an ICBM to do it when you can use a cheep craft over and over again. Or at least that is thinking.
@Interleap Yes I would agree that NASA has done lots of good stuff. But, it has also killed off all its rivals. It killed off the X craft project just as it was getting interesting and has clamed all the space funding the USA government give out to the exclusion of even of other branches of government with lagitermet interests in space. NASA also has a habit of finding complex and expensive solutions to simple problems. Remember there project to get a ball point pen to work in space.
@videosouthafrica I am glad you are not an aerospace engineer, as MORE engines is usually bad. More parts, more chances for a part to break. You never really want more than 2 of anything on a plane.
@mrmaciejm it will get cheaper one day i hope i quess its a matter of time before some other billionare comes and copies his idea and once more and more people do this it will get cheaper
This guy can't make a balloon do what it's supposed to...and all this for FIVE minutes of weightless experience? I'd rather pay the money to do something else. He should be clever by doing a water version called "Virgin Deep Atlantic" as I feel this craft might end up in it like his balloons end up in stupid places!
3 people killed? i bet they got through to virgins broadband tech help and spent there last few minutes trying to do a ping test for some idiot indian fella picking his fat arse and getting shirty when they explained they where in deep trouble old dick needs to sort his shit down here on earth before pissing off to space
I think sub-orbital flight is pretty cool (useful for science instruments), but if I'm paying 200,000, I want true orbital spaceflight. I'm talking four-night package with a free mint velcroed onto my space pillow.
@looksintolasers lol 200k for sub orbital flight is cheap as shit... 4 night package is gonna cost you millions.. think about how much it costs nasa to send people up
@looksintolasers That's for the first 500 people I believe. After that, the price will be $25,000. I am sure the price will go down as the years go by. In ten years, you should be alright.
Hmm, NASA actually has done alot of good things- not just sending astronauts to the moon- but also the discoveries with space probes (e.g: we know more about Mars, Titan and other things in space.)
However, I do believe Virgin Galactic and other space companies will definitely speed-up the technology.
What's with the knock on NASA? Yes, over the past 50 years NASA has spent billions of dollars on space travel. They also put men on the moon with the Apollo missions--several times--something people had only dreamt of before (and which accounts for only a fraction of NASA's spending). They invented the first reusable spacecraft (the X-15 and then later the space shuttle). NASA have been pioneers in manned space flight. Doesn't Sir Richard realize that he is standing on the shoulders of giants?
how long do you think it'll be before space flight is affordable to the average person? I honestly think in around 2020-2025 people like me will be able to afford it
Above & Beyond's trance song "Buzz (Buzztalk Mix)" was the official song of the spaceship's unveiling... it features the voices of buzz aldren and neil armstrong as they make first impact in tranquility base on the moon. what a great song!
it seems probable, but more of a novelty than actually being usefull. 5 minutes of weightlessness. the vomit comet dose more than that for $3,000 instead of $200,000.
Well, I don't know if you've ever flown an aircraft through some zero-g parabolic arcs but it will never be the same as the zero-g one experiences in space. Even the vomit comet only manages 30 seconds or so per arc and there is a lot of variation in the g's, so it's like 0, .1, -.1, etc. The pilot has to make constant corrections to maintain zero-g.
This spaceflight gives a continuous, smooth 5 minute zero-g experience, an awesome view and initially you go from ~250 to 2500mph in 10 seconds!
I understand it's not the same exact thing but no it's not worth 200,000. sorry but eventually you get shoved into your chair get a few minutes of floating and looking at the upper atmosphere and then get shoved back in your chair. and by the way what makes you think this really will be 0G. it's highly unlikely that every excursion will reach the same height.
You really can't even try to claim that it isn't worth the price. No vomit comet will take you into space and give you that view. No vomit comet will accelerate at those rates.
The price is actually RIDICULOUSLY low considering what you're getting (Fuel is NOT cheap, nor is the aircraft or insurance dude). It's a sub-orbital flight not too different from what Alan Shepard experienced during the first manned US Spaceflight.
I agree with mirror. There is a reason its so expensive. Projected price for the future is 10k tho. Your 5 day orbit could be the next project once commercial orbit takes place. And it will be 200k plus for sure as well. But that first step always pricey as hell. Once its done though, once the mula rolls in from daily launches....cheaper and cheaper. Then competitive pricing will kick into gear as other businesses finally reach the market. Then no telling how cheap, as tech grows.
@mindsmirror True true true! Generally if you'd go with nasa plan it would cost you about 11MILLION! Because per pound it costs an average of 10THOUSAND dollars! the private sector should research in ways to cut costs. the ISS alone is the most EXPENSIVE single object ever built by man.
With all the government space monopolys these guys come up with a way to re-entry without all the fire and brimestone. Saya alot about individualism and the collective.,
my hats off to Mr Branson in many ways.
I wish the best for this venture and ones to come. Im savin my pennies.
What I wanted to say is that we have the Coppenhag meeting about the Earth climate and this. It carry a weird sensation to have those two things... Together.
Comparing Virgin to NASA is so very wrong. I gather NASA has put a lot of heart in those missions, so did the astronauts who died for it. Now this man says he is gonna go to the moon and go back ? No he won't.
I must have heard a different voice than you. My misfortune, I am stuck in reality. Sir Branson stated "...NASA has spent Billions......" nothing about the moon. In fact Sir Richard Branson was very kind to NASA. Spread sheets would show NASA has spent Trillions
yes but NASA started with nothing. We have the technology now. Of course it's going to be cheaper for Branston to send his thousands of people into space.
The point ias NASA has misspent trillions of dollars to go to Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. We benefit by wsome fantastic imagery and the Scientists develop a mechanism with which they can have a very well paid career. Other than that what doesa it matter how acretion takes place?
B5 fan! Fantastic. It is kind of a mind-bending statistic that all the NASA money = 480 people in space, with an aborted moon program for 2010. How disappointing.
What a crock of shit.....all these richy bitches spending money on useless crap like this and we cant even find a cure for cancer or something like that.
I hope Branson dies in space, his carcass to forever float the blackness!
calm down , space conquest is a necessity for human life . in the following thousand centuries , the earth will be overcrowded ,raw material ,food and water exhausted or contaminated . the future is to conquer outer space to settle in new planets .
Its okay to make dreams and expand our future...but share your future with the little people who in large numbers have made Sir RB a trillionaire, he is no idol for G.O.D. does not like idols but if he carries on his mission (dream) with his commoners then he will be truly one of the few men to live on in remembrance for thousands of years.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
me sir. Richard Branson ...me billionaire....me big boy, big money.....me fly up high....me fuck up the environment.....me offer $20,000,000 for anyone who clean this shit....."shit" is the air we inhale.......
you and Bin Ladin can live in a cave not under a cave, you dumbass...hey super, what ever happened to Nikola Tesla's video " The genius who lit the world " .....
were all the others went like the guy who invented the television, they all died in poverty, thank the people of the world for letting the good die in poverty and let the bad live in wealth
im all about space travel, but whats the point when the nearest star is more then 4 light years away! they should be spending their money on time travel or figuring out how to warp time and space, we already know what is in our own solar system.
Not true. There are plenty of things we haven't seen in our own solar system. Oceans under Europa's ice, possible water ice on Mars, near Earth asteroids/comets. Plenty of interesting things to discover right in our own backyard. Unfortunately I don't think more $ will lead to warp speed just yet.
Right but there are no inhabitable planets in our solar system. There for, aside from the beauty of what we can see what is the point? But i suppose its a start eh?
Every industry has to start somewhere, usually as expensive playthings of the rich. As the industry matures, I'm sure things will get cheaper and cheaper.
Wow! Ian Lungold might be right. He said we would be moving into the galatic era around this time and now they are building spaceships. Go listen to his FULL lecture about evolution. Brilliant guy RIP.
Looks like all the new jobs will be in New Mexico. Start gaining your composite material layup skills now! Resin and rollers. Think of the cargo possibilities ! What is it now $10,000 per pound the old rocket way? Remember that passenger commercial aviation was made possible by delivering the mail with every flight. That still goes on today. A little cargo & some rich folks ...We all win!
If everything else wasn't so far in the deepest of hells, this would be so cool. Even as dark as everything else is, I still have a few neurons that lit up when I saw this video. It won't last long but thanks for actually doing something that might get the rich spending money. Albeit they will be spending the money with the rich, but to maintain this fleet, some money would at least flow down to the engineers and technicians that end up supporting this feat. Good luck. Watch out 2012!
way of the future ... way of the future ... way of the future ... way of the future ... way of the future...way of the future..way of the future.way of the future wayofthefuture wayofthefuturewayofthefuturewayofthefuturewayotthefuturewayofthefuturewayofthefuture
To all the slothful desktop critics of Sir Richard Brandson: He will achieve more in one hour than your lazy asses will in your lifetime! Gotta be a communist to look down at anyone with wealth who takes risk at achieving the untried. I think Virgin Galactic is a great step in the commercialization of space. Once space travel is available to the masses, next comes the space hotels. I would love to experience orbiting the earth in weightlessness before I leave it.
Meeeeanwhile we have a high unemployment rate and millions without healthcare. He could invest his money in something that would create jobs in American or England but no, we get a space shuttle for the rich. Why are you defending him anyway? It's not like you can afford a ticket.
Wait let me explain. You are dependent upon others to create a prepackaged job for you. You are dependent. Healthcare for people is not a luxury or a right, you pay for it if you want it and you don't ask for anything because you aren't entitled to that.
A practical alternative is to eat healthy and do without the fast food...you lazy slob.
This man is a very creative person and he can create all he wants as he pleases!!
That's a nice compliment to the man. Jobs in the aerospace sector are very important....and Calif and New Mexico are going to reap numerous benefits from this ambitious plan. It takes futurists to get things moving when the cynic, naysayer, and inept types throw in the towel....
what about us poor folks lol...seriously i hate money

In reality Virgin Galactic have surpassed NASA by a long shot with much more advanced, practical, and green technology. Look up Spaceshiptwo's feathering technique and you'll see what I mean. Besides, why defend NASA when they've publicly stated that they have no intention of commercial space flight. They only care about their own means.
OutsideofTime 1 year ago
@OutsideofTime Yes, NASA hasn't been doing much since the "moon landings".
661Sunshine 1 year ago
@661Sunshine are you stupid? NASA have done lodes of things since the moon landing and if they had the funding they would have done even more.
Of the top of my head Voyager 1 and 2 traveled to every known outer planet and and moon to take photos and they're now at the end of our solar system. Viking 1 and 2 landed on Mars and took orbital pictures of every spot on Mars. Visiting Mars now would cost around $40 billion and the US government cut down on NASA's spending budget due to the economy.
Interleap 1 year ago
@Interleap Wow what a crappy exploration. Thanks for letting me fully know how shitty the NASA is.
661Sunshine 1 year ago
@661Sunshine You do realise that all virgin is doing is giving people 5 minutes of free falling?
NASA already do this with regular planes but instead of a 5 minute weightlessness for 200000 thousand pounds they give you 40-60 25 second weightless sessions for only 2000.
So it is 100 times cheaper and in total you get 20 minutes of weightlessness.
If your so reach that you don't care how about you pay NASA to take you to orbit?
Virgin is just the poor richmans space trip NASA are the real deal..
Interleap 1 year ago
@Interleap Yes mate. But, he is using this project as a smock screen. The end game is to take over satellite delivery. Satellites are getting smaller? No. But, the stuff on them is. So you just build constellations of small satellites rather than one big one and boost them from low earth orbit. If you do that why do you need an ICBM to do it when you can use a cheep craft over and over again. Or at least that is thinking.
tina6581 1 year ago
@Interleap Yes I would agree that NASA has done lots of good stuff. But, it has also killed off all its rivals. It killed off the X craft project just as it was getting interesting and has clamed all the space funding the USA government give out to the exclusion of even of other branches of government with lagitermet interests in space. NASA also has a habit of finding complex and expensive solutions to simple problems. Remember there project to get a ball point pen to work in space.

This guy can't make a balloon do what it's supposed to...and all this for FIVE minutes of weightless experience? I'd rather pay the money to do something else. Hmm, NASA actually has done alot of good things- not just sending astronauts to the moon- but also the discoveries with space probes (e.g: we know more about Mars, Titan and other things in space.)
However, I do believe Virgin Galactic and other space companies will definitely speed-up the technology.
Ingridtk 2 years ago
What's with the knock on NASA? Yes, over the past 50 years NASA has spent billions of dollars on space travel. They also put men on the moon with the Apollo missions--several times--something people had only dreamt of before (and which accounts for only a fraction of NASA's spending). They invented the first reusable spacecraft (the X-15 and then later the space shuttle). NASA have been pioneers in manned space flight. Doesn't Sir Richard realize that he is standing on the shoulders of giants?

that is one of the coolest things ever, if I was rich, this would definately be on my christmas list, imagine 5 minutes in space, sweeeet
Zemoviemen1 2 years ago
it seems probable, but more of a novelty than actually being usefull. 5 minutes of weightlessness. the vomit comet dose more than that for $3,000 instead of $200,000.
DonHoraldo 2 years ago
Well, I don't know if you've ever flown an aircraft through some zero-g parabolic arcs but it will never be the same as the zero-g one experiences in space. Even the vomit comet only manages 30 seconds or so per arc and there is a lot of variation in the g's, so it's like 0, .1, -.1, etc. The pilot has to make constant corrections to maintain zero-g.
This spaceflight gives a continuous, smooth 5 minute zero-g experience, an awesome view and initially you go from ~250 to 2500mph in 10 seconds!
mindsmirror 2 years ago 3
I understand it's not the same exact thing but no it's not worth 200,000. sorry but eventually you get shoved into your chair get a few minutes of floating and looking at the upper atmosphere and then get shoved back in your chair. and by the way what makes you think this really will be 0G. it's highly unlikely that every excursion will reach the same height.
DonHoraldo 2 years ago
You really can't even try to claim that it isn't worth the price. No vomit comet will take you into space and give you that view. No vomit comet will accelerate at those rates.
The price is actually RIDICULOUSLY low considering what you're getting (Fuel is NOT cheap, nor is the aircraft or insurance dude). It's a sub-orbital flight not too different from what Alan Shepard experienced during the first manned US Spaceflight.
mindsmirror 2 years ago 15
@mindsmirror Really though.. The fact that this is anywhere under 1 million dollars blows my mind..
Ynnadodgers 1 year ago
@mindsmirror
Salaina5555 1 year ago
@mindsmirror True true true! Generally if you'd go with nasa plan it would cost you about 11MILLION! Because per pound it costs an average of 10THOUSAND dollars! the private sector should research in ways to cut costs. the ISS alone is the most EXPENSIVE single object ever built by man.

Not true. There are plenty of things we haven't seen in our own solar system. Oceans under Europa's ice, possible water ice on Mars, near Earth asteroids/comets. Plenty of interesting things to discover right in our own backyard. Unfortunately I don't think more $ will lead to warp speed just yet.

A practical alternative is to eat healthy and do without the fast food...you lazy slob.
