But if you think it was Mello's emotions which caused his death, you are mistaken. He knowingly sacrificed his life by capturing Takada to give Near an opening. In the end, his actions were to help put an end to Kira, not to come out on top.

And Matsuda comes through in the end, too. You can't call him weak after seeing the last episode, no way.
