  • @pyroman675 no in this area, but the Chumash of Southern California used tar from the tar pits to seal theirs

  • Nice video Scott, people here used tule for their homes up untill the early 1900's. great material.

  • @EDINBURGSTAR I have built a few tule houses too... I didn't know they were used in your area. Thanks.

  • thanks! that was some great handiwork

  • we used to have those river cane where i live but they cleared out alot of those areas- its a shame really because those were good for making alot of things

  • this is amazing my friend. you have done something/s that many only dream of and some cant even imagine.

  • @bikemessenger7 Thanks

  • I use about the same material to make camping matresses.

Using it as a boat...how long does it take before it starts degrading? Would it last an entire summer?

  • @Lepiratepoulpe if you take it out of the water...the second boat from 1981 still sits in a museum in California

  • Hi Scott, very good, thanks. Cool to see you back in time : ) Happy Weekend Sepp

  • cool! Very interesting.

  • Very cool. Near here we have a whole lot of bulrush and I know that the pomo used them alot.

  • Great video! I can only imagine the work that must go into constructing one. Especially making the thousand feet of rope. Thanks for sharing this : )

  • how about a video(s) showing how to actually make one (one or two person), that would be cool

  • @bonesword98 yes I would like to do that but never seem to get the time..... so I thought I would show the concept at least

  • what do you figure the lifespan on these things might be? you guys managed some lovely curves in it.

  • @fishtankbank you can make one man boat in one day, If you took it out of the water after each use I would say one year. They still uses balsa tule boats in parts of Peru.

  • Thank you for sharing this with us! You sure do some really fun stuff. Now I can get started on building my sea worthy vessel ! Lol

  • @88GRENADE88 You better hurry, the tide is rising and it's judgement day tomorrow.

  • This is a cool way to make a boat on the cheap. Very nice. It looks like a tough boat.

  • Good job!

I suppose an industrious guy might be able to do something similar with bundles of PVC pipes?

  • @MrBillTroop73 yes that works too... but tules are free...

  • @LivingHistorySchool true enough.
