@TheNaturecenter Hi NatureCenter -- I knew it was time for the babies to come out. I had marked on the calendar when the mother bore them there. So, a couple days after they were to emerge and hadn't, I placed a rug in the ditch and stationed myself there with my camera. Then I began delicately excavating the opening. Obviously, they were ready!
Hi Brookexxlayne: The mother rabbit digs the burrow after she's already pregnant. In fact, I think she digs it the day she pops the bunnies into it. They "incubate" in the burrow for six weeks then come out. Usually the mother opens the burrow. In this case, the mother had become coyote food or road kill or something. She didn't come back. I gave her an extra day or two, then opened the burrow. Obviously the little guys were ready to see the world! ;-)
Wow! What an excellent video you've made. We've raised one from about day 8 or so when we rescued "her". Melvin Cottontail is now over 1 year old. Great work on catching a special moment.

Why are you raising Melvin? Was his mother killed? Oh, Melvin is a female? (Like Robert the Quail!) Tell me what you've learned, please!
Did you see my vid. of the mother nursing?
