Watching the Dvds as we speak. Now I always figured that they survived the nuclear blast at the end of season 1 because it was an experimental warhead that only destroyed buildings and didn't harm humans (the anti-neutron bomb), hence why we can hear Trunk shouting over the remains of the ruined city, they all survived. The city got rebuilt between season 1 and 2 and the season 2 eps span between the 5 years before and post season 1, hence why the eps make contemporary references.
