  • Next year it will be 30 years since the late lamented WKBS-TV went off the air. If only Metromedia had sold one of their network affils in Boston (WCVB) or KC (KMBC) they could've had enough money to buy 48. Of course that could've also meant FOX 48 instead of FOX 29 (WTAF/WTXF).

Tony what were you doing when WKBS officially went off forever that August night in 1983?

  • Thanks for that - I remember it well!

  • Classic Philadelphia Television.

  • In case anyone here's wondering how this lil' old 47 year old Jersey boy got WKBS 48 Creature Double Feature and WPHL 17 back in the day, simple: we lived high up on a hill, above the treeline in most cases, AND we had a rotary antenna we could spin to any direction.

That said, we got all the New York-Tri-State channels as well as the UHF stuff like Philly 48 and 17, and all the great stuff like Creature Double Feature and Dr. Shock. I miss those old pre-cable days, AND my old house!

  • TM341: Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I've been looking for this opening for years, and you came thru with flying colors. Many summer afternoons were spent watching CDF on channel 48 from the comfort of my living room in Asbury, New Jersey. Many fond memories!

By any chance, do you have any old VHS tapes of WNEW 5's Creature Features? Many of us are looking for this one too. ANyhow, thanks for finding this!

  • @Shawnster65 shawn, finally watche dthis this morning, i think you mentioned this a while back. kinda reminds me of the wpix chiller 6 finger open. this is a cool find.

  • i remember watching this as a kid thanx for posting

  • this brings me back.......really miss old school wkbs.

  • @2199 SO DO I... SOB! I MISS OLD TV IN GENERAL: LESS CHANNELS BUT WAY MORE QUALITY T.V.!

  • @mtdinstrumentals and for the life of my friends who were round when this was a cool station dont recall a show about some dude on the beach excerising....the show's host was called Ed Allen......and it was like on for an hour after the cartoons went off on weekday mornings.

  • Is there a place to get a list of movies they showed? I'm in Canada, so we didn't get it here AFAIK.

  • TM3412: I remembered the painting, but the way I remember it was with a guy with a deep-voice announcing which movies was playing each week... (as in, "Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing in... -- insert the name of that week's movie). Am I remembering that correctly? Also...do you have an idea of what year this was from?

  • @NicoleCushingWriter , Hi sorry I did not get back sooner. I think the year we did this open and close for the show was in the later 70's, can't remember the exact year. As to the movies names, I can't remember his name,

he did the voice over's in alot of our programs. If I find out I'll foward his name on this site. Chris Lee and Peter Cushing did some great horror films in thier day.........Thank's for visiting my page.

  • Phenomenal! I have been searching for this forever. Now all we need is a little kickstart into Dracula v. Frankenstein, or Equinox, or the Two headed Transplant...wow, the glory days...many thanks.

  • Thank you so much for posting this...it brings back some great memories

  • DabikwidOw2008...... Your right movies back then had no special effects. They just filmed it like it was.... Now with computer effects, it all looks good, but fake.....

Were did those B&W films go?????

  • @TM3412 this use to scare me when this came on in my area of south Jersey....this and the commericals for Brigentine Castle.

  • @TM3412 Does anyone remember a horrow show that it was a lady running in the forest (around dawn). It's foggy - I also remember that a coffin opens up and the words "BOO" pop on the screen. It was late 70's. I lived in Brownsville TX so not sure if the show was national. Ive been looking for this video for a long time.

  • Philaman1972, Bad place to watch horror movies is in the basement............

Did you have the light off or on?????????

  • TV aint been the same since

  • Thanks for putting this up, Tony. It brings back great memories.

  • Glad to bring you guys back to the 70's again. That was done when the word "Special effects" was real and on camera... Noy done with computers.......It;s a real shame we went under. We had the best movie and half hour shows in Philly......

  • Oh man Tony thanks a MILLION you have no ides how impotant this is to me ! 48 was the BEST channel!! Grew up on it!!

  • Awsome!

  • Awesome. I used to watch this as a little kid on Saturday afternoon's in my basement, right after WWF wrestling.

  • !!!!!!!!!! You have no idea how long I've waited to see this! Aaaaaah! Thank you so so so so much! This is so awesome! Years! I've waited decades to see this opening sequence again! Where did you find it!? I never thought I've ever see it on Youtube!

  • @kevinperson

Kevin, I had this in my VHS collection since we went off the air in August 1983. They made me a copy to keep, since it is my hand. Those were the days of real effects for TV.......Glad I brought back the years for you.....
