What's the source? - ( "Asking only for the source.")
For a long time now I've wished JB would release an album of live stuff from the early-mid 70s... or a dvd. The quality here ain't bad. Without the highs fading in and out this would be a worthy one for just such a dvd. Good one. Thanks. -What's the source?
Not the best version, but we get to see them live, What a great song. This guy had a brief affair with another of the best singer/sonwriters of all time, Laura Nyro. He wrote a song about her, "That girl could sing." You all should check her out. She's even better than Jackson.
when anyone who meets me within the first 3 days they will know 3 things about me. My love for GOD, my dog Sunshine who died in 88, and my love for the greatest singer, songwriter on the planet; Jackson Browne. He goes straight for the heart and soul in his music deep...
I remember this song as a teen and playing it on my guitar. It was very intense then. Little did I understand! Now every word hits home to my soul. I am in trouble!
Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone and close to the end of the feeling we've known ...after 30 years, I'm alone. What an empty surprise indeed.
So glad to see Jackson perform one of his early songs. Like so many of them, it is about his life. He was married and his wife killed herself, leaving him with a small child. I always thought that was the subject of this song, although it could be about unahppy love in general. Still, it's a personal thing for him. Listen to his music up to and including The Pretender and you'll hear his thoughts set to thoughtful tunes. He's always been one of my faves.
@cliftongal51 .... I'm a huge Jackson Browne fan too... nothing like his voice to soothe you on a Sunday afternoon. I just wanted to send a bit of info your way: this song is not about his wife's suicide. This song was the title track from his 1974 album. His wife killed herself in March of 1976. Sad part of his life, for sure, but not the subject of this song. Keep on loving his music!
I love this song so much. I almost cry every time I hear "if I close my eyes and try with all my might to be the one you need." Thanks for posting this.
"How long have I been sleeping?....How long have I been drifting alone thru the night?"...i love this song...I was introduced 2 it in the movie"Taxi Driver" and have been obsessed with it ever since..I identify with every word!!!classic!
His passion is fearce!Jackson Browne I was just a teen when I wrote these words funny it happened to me.Loving someone so hard you forgot to get your own!to be the the one you need! awsome!
Yes, pure lyrical and musical genius! How does an interesting phrase like "late for the sky" end up with so much meaning? Was he running to catch that morning flight while realizing dissillusionment with his relationship? Beautiful song with amazing meaning . . . how does he do it???
My opinion: THE most awesome songwriter. I have listened to him since I was 13 and will continue. This song has always been my favorite. Can't wait to see him on the road again.
In the very early 80s, I was a high school student who loved poetry...a very dear friend, who has since died, gave me this "poem" written by "anonymous"...it was my favorite ever written piece and I had it memorized....in the spring of 2000, I was driving home from a late night shift at a shelter I worked at and this "poem" came on the radio....I stopped at WalMart and picked up the album, this song is played at least once a day in my house :o)
He sounds the same in concert as he does on the LP. (Hahaha I said LP) Except the one time at Westbury Music Fair Concert when he forgot his lines kind of repeatedly and had a different person from the audience come down to help him sing each song for about 5 songs. It was such a memorable concert, especially since it's a small little theater in the round and pretty much everyone is close to the stage.
Marie if I never had to say another word I wouldn't. Those do come easy it's true. It was indeed our touch that meant the world. That person you were hoping I might be is out there for you. Promise.
BravO mr. Jackson for opening my heart to the Cali/singer/songwriter sound I miss it so will there ever be a time again when poets/lyricist return? Rick
Been singing it the whole day.

"Taxi Driver," that's where I first heard it, too. Tracked it down after that. Had to have it. Incredible.

Not much, maybe CSN&Y, but I'll listen to
this guy until I'm on my deathbed... genius.

"Now for me some words come easy,
But I know that they don't mean that much
Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch."
All know this to be true. Some know it in joy. Some know it in sorrow.
Aentnothan 3 years ago
If you have ever truly loved, and you are (at least) at the age of reason, I would submit that everyone knows from both.
BrushApe66 3 years ago
You are right BrushApe66, submission accepted. Sometimes lovers even know from the touch of joy and sorrow together:
It doesn't matter if you're born to play the king or pawn,
For the line is thinly drawn between joy and sorrow.
A gem from rhymin Simon, a jewel for the crown of Browne.

"Awake again I can't pretend and I know I'm alone and close to the end of the feeling we'd known..."
So hard to get human romantic relationships right for both people.
On the album, David Lindley is simply brilliant. My favorite guitar solo of all time...and not a 32nd note to be found.
