I made these polis this morning, however my lil' flat breads did not puff up. =( I'm not sure why. Any suggestions you may have will be much appreciated.
@ndlz1 I'm not sure this is the problem, but did you make sure that the pan you fried them on was very, very hot? They're "raised" by the heat of the pan, not by any chemical or biological activity, so the pan has to be very hot to make them puff.
i am maharshtrian. we make puran poli using chana dal and we add turmeric to the dough to give it a golden look. and also i put it chana dal and sugar in mixie so that every dal is finely mashed and then cook it.

we andhras use chennadal+jaggery. thats our traditional dal to make bobatlu. but i 'll try with toor+sugar,looks good.

Auntyji : My neighbor taught me this using Chana Dal and she is a Maharashtrian lady. So what is the traditional dal that is used....Tuvar or Chana?
