  • amazing .... I've been watching all you vids for the last few hours! You are a very talented individual.

  • @mr4teth Thank you very much, I really appreciate that!

  • niceeee

  • 素晴らしい演奏でした\(^o^)/

  • Prooofessionall

  • nice guitar dude

  • This was amazing!

  • awesome videos! too bad you haven't included jason becker and marty friedman but I guess yngwie is more popular

  • @Thebugzapperdemo Thanks! Yes, I had to make a selection, and Yngwie was a pioneer, and the one that first caught my attention back in the days, so I chose him, sorry.. ;-)

  • Your versatility is exceeded only by your musicianship. Well done. (again)

  • @aninstrumentalvision Thank you very much! (again..)

  • U R an awesome guitarist without a fucking doubt.

  • Incredible! Just stumbled across this video and I am glad I did. Forgive my ignorance here, but 1) are all these tones actual stock presets or your own creations; 2) are you only playing through the Axe-FX? I know these are simpleminded questions, but this is the first time hearing anything like this and of this quality. Thanks!!

  • @khalilhab Thanks! Most of the tones are modified stock presets, read the video subtitles in the beginning of each track for more detailed info. And yes, I'm playing direct through the Axe-Fx only.

  • @rednebb Thank you! That's amazing. Really looking forward to hearing more from you. Great playing

  • Thanks for putting a smile on my face..loved your vids man..great,,need to get the Fractal..but where in the UK I do now know...arrrhhh

  • very nice review and excellent guitar player, thanks for share

  • @madipta Thanks :-)

  • i was upset cause i thought this was the last part, but then i saw part 4 YAY!

  • @m1234n1234 ;-)

  • Dude you musta played in a gazillion cover bands, lol. Impressed with all the styles you covered in your videos. That axe fx is nice, some really believable tones.

  • Holy cow it really sounds like the original Master of Puppets. Well done man.

  • @lunaticitizen Thanks, I'm glad to hear you say that, cause a few others have commented that it doesn't sound like the original at all, and that I don't play it right (w/downstrokes.. :-)

  • You're such an incredible player!!! Congratulations my friend!!

  • Really great musician. some sounds are a little 'tinny' but overall a great demo.

  • I mean,..he plays like every cool riff ever created on guitar...that's a lot o styles.....but,...gotta learn to all downpick on the metallica...!!...hehe....

  • @synesthesia67 Thanks, and yeah, I know; I'm not a big fan of downpicking (because I have never really practiced that).. ;-)

  • @rednebb ...dude that totally did NOT suck ass...at all...great playing..and...whoa!! I can't believe you picked all those arpeggios at the end of the yngwie!!...I hammer those on,..all the way...I want an axe-fx so bad ..a friend has one and loves it....but it's a little rich for my blood for now....do you gig with it?...you could blow people away with a cover band and that thing...!!!...the tones are pretty damn close to the real thing to my ears...

  • @synesthesia67 Thanks again, yes, I do gig with it, but sometimes when I don't need all the bells and whistles, I just use my small combo amp instead.

  • Very nice job on the yngwie bit

  • @JoeyTheGuitarDude Thanks :-)

  • You are the best man.....

  • Bought your music at Cdbaby. These videos really are a history-an articulate

and well researched history of Rock. Someone should give you a grant to

archive these. Tech question-what is that item on the neck of the Carvin( that

looks like a capo) in some of the shots? Amazing music-thank you!

  • @wyoung9888 Thank you very much, I appreciate that! It's just an elastic hairband (which I obviously don't need for my hair..;-), used to dampen the strings when I do two-handed tapping stuff.

  • Brother, you need a cape and a smoke machine.. flawless!

  • @alphadynamic Haha, thanks! ;-)

  • Lol 7:33 hehehe Nice video bro!!! this is really helpful, i will buy a multieffects my options: podhd500 and this one, but this one is really expensive :( Thanks!

  • You're very, very, very good at guitar.

  • You DESTROYED the Malmsteen. :O

  • @DavidRayT Sorry you didn't like it. I did my best, but I guess there's only one Yngwie..

  • @rednebb Nooo, I meant that in a good way! It was fantastic!

  • @DavidRayT Haha, Ok, I didn't get that.. Thanks!

  • @rednebb

That was a tricky comment! It can be understood both ways! ;)

Ah, the guy said it himself. :)

  • @rednebb first and only time a modeler sounds credible ! at this point, could you show how the machine responds to dynamics (i.e. : volume pot, hard/soft picking, etc...). by the way, your backing tracks are amazing too (especially the drums parts, if this is not a drummer, very great job). I'm totally blown, I take myself as a "tube lover", usin' digital only for convenience, never seriously. But this time...waouw ! Bravo !

  • @poutilaya Thanks a lot! On several of the clips I'm using the volume pot and/or soft picking to show the dynamics of the Axe-Fx, it can clean up nicely even on a high gain sound. Check out for instance Stairway to Heaven on my Part 1 video, Europa/Santana and Hot for Teacher/Van Halen on Part 2, and Still got the Blues/Gary Moore on Part 4.

  • @rednebb

Man, David should throw up a video 'cuz if I can play it as cleanly as you I'd be satisfied! Well, until I then...

  • @WageASPSlaves Thanks, but who's David..?

  • @rednebb

The guy (DavidRayT) that said you destroyed malmsteen, but I realize now he meant to compliment you. Great vids and awesome tone once again!

  • @WageASPSlaves Yeah ;-) Thanks!

  • Man, I have seen some great players in my life, I have heard some great tones in my life. It is a rare privalige to see such talent and tone all together. You are an incredible player. Im about to get the axe and cant wait. Fine job...Top notch...TOP NOTCH!!!

  • You've sold me on two things: 1) the Axe-FX and 2) I think I'm good, but after watching you, WOW, I really need to practice. Awesome vids!

  • @GeorgeFKirk Thanks :-)

  • I can tell you've been playing a long time, all the practice was definitely worth it. These demo vids sound so professional. They're amazing!

  • @EdBallMusic Thanks!

  • These are all great sounds! Plus, the playing is awesome. The only slight negative I'd have would be how close can we get to these sounds with just one or two guitars (like most of us have) being played? I've got a PRS, which does humbucker and single-coil sounds, as well as a Taylor T5. I wonder what this thing would do for the T5; I bet It'd be awesome!

  • @JasonWB007 Thanks! I'm sure it would do fine on your guitars as well, but of course, you'll get even more versatility if you had more guitars, like me.. ;-)

  • killer playing, very versatile player and great job with the YjM!!!

the axe-fx does a great job of reproducing the crappy randy rhoads tones

  • @xntrickk Thanks! Yes, it can do the "crappy Randy Rhoads tones" and almost any kind of other tones perfectly well, too.. ;-)

  • A true musician!

  • Scuttle Buttin is indeed AMAZING!!! i can listen to it all day long, and i like it even better than SRV's

  • nice paul gilbert!

  • TEACH ME PLEASE!

  • ghost guitar on the door

  • The one and only lick master!

  • Would I be able to use this effects processor running through my amp head to my cabinets or is this thing meant for PAs & stereo speakers?

  • @ApotheosiZ Yes, you can do that, but it will probably work best through a FR system like the Atomic Reactor FR, or high quality active monitors, and/or of course a PA system.

  • Hei Ketil,

Fellow Scandinavian here. Im currently looking into the Axe-Fx and wonder what setup you use live? PA or Atomic amps, or something else?

    all the best

    /Urban

  • @MrGuitarabuse Hello! The Axe-Fx goes straight to PA and I've used various setups for personal monitoring: one or two Atomic Reactor FRs (that's what I'm currently using), a Yamaha Stagepas 500 mini PA system, and other active monitors.

  • You are truly amazing and very talented!

  • Simply Virtuoso. Great backing tracks as well

  • @raulnieblas Thanks!

  • nice playing! what are those pickups in the ibanez custom agent?

  • @yamazedzero Thanks! It's the original Ibanez Pickups, I removed the once-upon-a-time gold covers and put on new gold pickup rings instead..

  • I completely agree. I just downloaded this mp3 at uconvmp3..com. for real.

  • Well..... that kicked ass!

  • Man, absolutely great! How many hours did it take you to fine tune all the sounds and the highly skilled playing? I wish I was as disciplinied as you. GREAT!

  • Great video. The playing was great and some of the tones were a lot more accurate than I thought they'd be. I assume there's also a lot of scope for creating your own tones as well?

  • @AlterBridgeRule Thanks, and yes, the possibilities are almost endless..

  • Scarified! Awesome videos...you're making me want one..

  • Great playing, good sounds..

  • @rofln00b Ok, I admit I'm not a Metallica expert, but I included this because Metallica is an important band in Rock history, and because the Axe-Fx Ultra has a preset called "Master of Muppets" :-) And I know about the downstrokes, but I chose to play it a way that suits me better, sorry.. And maybe it doesn't sound exactly like the original, but to say that "this thing sucks ass" based on that song only is a bit harsh.. Have you watched the rest of the video, do you think that sucks, too..?

  • @rednebb Don't even bother responding. it's clear rofln00b is only 6 and has no idea. Thanks for these vids, they're awesome! You're playing is amazing and no-one has come close to reviewing the axefx like you have! Cheers.

  • @rednebb I admit I was trolling, the opportunity was just too good to be left unused. For everyone's info, I know how to spell correctly and you are a really good guitar player, you exceeded my playing capabilities with the first song already :) The Yngwie then just blew my mind! I'd get the first three notes correct but the rest would be a messy blur and sound more like a cat being tortured than a guitar. Truth be told, I'd love to get the Axe-Fx but the price tag has one zero too much for me..

  • @rofln00b Haha, ok, and thanks! ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @hiladelphia Haha, thanks :-) (but if you're really 41 like it says on your profile that would be kind of weird..? ;-)

  • @rednebb Oh Com'on !!! Dont bother bout such stupid kids like rofln00b !:D I think threre are not so many guitarists who can play so many music styles so cool !!! Thumbs up!

  • @rofln00b Aside from being a useless and unnecessary "criticism," you should at least learn how to spell Metallica correctly...especially if they play your "favorite song."

  • @rofln00b

come on, he's playing yngwie malmsteens trilogy suite and scarified by racer x and you get angry about master of puppets?? what's wrong with you???

  • @rofln00b I'm wondering if Kirk ever know how to play jazz, funk, country? Watch the rest of the series!!!!

  • @rofln00b you are a fucking moron,a better sound with your what?dude you were watching the wrong video, this is a professional equipment and Mr.Strant is a fucking awesome guitar player,go to kindergarden and play with your toys.Post a video and let me see you playing DOD guy.

  • The guitar player sound excellent but the fractal sounds "buzzy" ...

The distortion is a bit thin.. and transistor sounding..

Shame because the guys a great player..

I think the future models of this technology will be be better they seem to be on the right track.. the clean tones arnt bad..

  • @awesomejohnnet Thanks! I'm sorry you think it sounds "buzzy" and thin. That's entirely your opinion, of course, but please keep in mind that you're listening to youtube, and they do bad things to the audio quality.. If you heard the original audio I hope and think you would not find it buzzy or thin or "transistor sounding" (what is that anyway..? ;-)

  • @rednebb

Of course you tube sound is bad but then again many of the effects we hear here can be referenced by ear to a certain extent. I think you play great and sound good but the fractal devise sounds ... well... not worthy of your playing brother.. its not "real sounding" , the clean to certain degree are okey but the distortion is a bit fizzy.

  • @awesomejohnnet Thank you, but I don't agree with you.. I wish I could challenge you to do a blindfold test with the Axe-Fx vs. a real tube amp, I think you would have a really hard time telling the difference.. I've played quite a few amps (with and without tubes) during my 30 years of playing, but now I actually prefer the Axe-Fx over all of them. Oh, and btw I prefer the Axe-Fx over mostly every effects pedals/processors I've tried too (and that's not few..).

  • @rednebb

Well in end all that matters is that you like the unit and enjoy its performance.

use it in good health I am not here to rain on your parade. I think you sound fine, I think play well, but I think you deserve better gear than that unit,. Even though your tired of carrying the real stuff around.

  • @awesomejohnnet Yes, I guess so! And in my (and many others) opinion, it's actually hard to find better gear than this. One funny thing is that in the guitar world, tube amps are always referred to as the "real" stuff, everything else is considered "fake". In almost all other departments, digital technology IS the current "real" thing and everything else is considered outdated and unsufficient, but why isn't digital stuff accepted as "real" by the guitar community as well..? ;-)

  • @rednebb

I think that its a matter of personal choice I have been playing 42 years professionally, and have tried many of the new digital modeling offerings... and while they show promise they are "not there yet" Why are the finest , most accomplished virtuoso players using tube amps? Because they have a musical quality with "random" even harmonics that modeling tech can not yet produce. I dont have a closed mind in time it will. But right now what I am hearing is missing something sonically.

  • @awesomejohnnet Of course it's a matter of personal choice. But have you actually tried the Axe-Fx? It 's in a completely different league than most of the other digital modeling stuff on the market. Yes, most pro players are still using tube amps, but maybe that will change in a few years..? As of today, you can already look at the "artists" list on Fractalaudio's website; Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Dweezil Zappa, Neal Schon and many more are already on the list, and I'm sure more will follow

  • @awesomejohnnet BTW, are you actually "Awesome John" himself, or are you just a fan? I checked a few videos of him, and he's, well; Awesome! :-)

  • @rednebb

Thats why I can appreciate your fine playing my friend. Takes years of concentration to get as proficient as you are and I admire and respect all my fellow players who put in the time and effort to achieve that level. That why I really commend you on your performances here. Yes I am AJ I was using the fan clubs directors computer and she is auto logged inhere. Anyway you sound wonderful and I hear what your saying about progress in time these units will get better and better.

  • @awesomejohnnet Thank you very much, and I must say I'm also very, very impressed by the videos I've seen on youtube featuring you, "Awesome John", it's really amazing and fun to watch, and I'd love to see and hear more of your work. I'm honored that you like my playing, it means much to be appreciated by such a great musician, thanks! BTW, what gear do you use yourself?

  • @rednebb

The rig changes yearly at the moment using three GT soulo 75 amps, for power, Marshall JMP1 for boost, TC Gsystem and rocktron patch mate for control, old digitech tube effects units, these are run stereo into a Groove tubes SFX encoder that feeds a "mono" stack on stage that fills the room with stereo sound. Keep in touch and I'd love to have you as a guest at a show and you can play it and tell me what you think. Its heavy I admit that but thats the price for the sound ya get..

  • @awesomejohnnet Cool, that's a lot of nice gear.. But I can't help to think that you should try an Axe-Fx Ultra to simplify your rig and save your back carrying all that heavy stuff.. ;-) I'd love to come to one of your shows someday, but I guess maybe you don't play in Norway too often..? And you're from Turkey, right?

  • @rednebb

I have some wonderful friends and fans in beautiful Norway. Hopefully in the future I will tour there as well. I am in Turkiye yes... Hope to see you here for a vacation some .. if you ever drop by send me a message and you can be a guest star to our shows. Stay well my friend and try adding a tube in the chain of this fractal and you may expand its harmonics and be pleased with its wider character.. try it someday.. maybe run it to an effect return of a warm tube amp...

  • @awesomejohnnet Cool, let me know if and when you'll come to Norway! I've never been to Turkey, but maybe I will some day.. Regards, Ketil

  • I forgot the fractal after hear this guy, he can play all the style from Jimmy to Yngwie, damn awesome!!!!!

  • this gotto be the best effects processor I heard! it doesnt sound anything like digital at my end, how is it with you? it probably cost a small fortune?

  • @satjathamma Thanks, and yes, it's the best I've heard, too! It costs around $2000, but you really get A LOT for the money ;-)

  • HAHAHAHA i love the look you give the camera at 4:58

  • @TheJebmyster Yeah, This is how stupid I look when I play something difficult..

  • Dude! "Scuttle Buttin' " was awesome, I've never seen anyone play it like that except for SRV.

  • @mmadden94 Thanks!

  • sounds are amazing! Your not a bad guitarist either haha :P

  • now you really surprised me...

  • Awesome Playing Dude!

  • Amigo tu é muito fera... Curti pra caramba...

  • joder como toca el tio, es una maquina... You are a excelent guitar man!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i'm watching all this "demo videos" of the fractal..man....you're an awesome versatile guitar player, you can play some very laid back jazzy stuff and then rip some fuckin mindblowing shred..AWESOME! you're a perfect example of what i want to become as a guitarist

  • @Spacca189 Thank you very much!

  • I use this thru my own PA, i play it thru my flat response speakers at home and thru other peoples PA - its just amazing.

  • @CrystalZRock Yeah, it sounds great almost no matter what you put it through.

  • Bravo. Great work Ketil Strand. An inspiration to many.

  • @BornIntoMusic Thanks! :-)

  • @BornIntoMusic include me

  • Holy freakin' sh!t !!! This guy is UNBELIEVABLE. :)

  • Wow! This is even more amazing than part 2. Are you a professional teacher? Are you a studio musician? I am amazed that you are adapt at so many styles. Excellent! You are definitely helping the sales of the Axe FX.

  • @rams1528 Thanks! Yes, I'm a guitar teacher, and I also do studio work occasionally.

  • As an axe fx owner i can tell you that all you disbelievers are very wrong. This box is the greatest thing i have ever purchased and will never swap it for anything. Its everything you need in a box, i play it live thru a PA and it roars. You could give me ten mesa's and id give them back to you and keep the axe fx!

  • @CrystalZRock Hear, hear.. ;-)

  • @CrystalZRock Do you have your own PA or do you use the venue's PA?

  • Awesome playing! Great clean tones, but I am not too sure about high gain. They sound distant and quite flat (you know, blanket on the cab type) to me. Might be youtube sound quality.

    Did you record it direct?

But, definitely first(series) of videos which convinced me to try axe-fx, which I'll do as soon as I can.

I am more of 2 tones (clean/high gain) man, but if I can get superb FX quality and as a bonus some amp models, then maybe...

  • @mdeeRocks Thanks! Yes, I recorded it direct. And, yes, youtube sucks out a good portion of the sound quality..

  • @mdeeRocks Have you heard the band periphery?

  • In fact, @Gyro911 , let me fetch you an analogy for this situation.

Ever seen a picture of the Grand Canyon on the internet?

It isn't the same as seeing it in real life, and it never will be.

  • @Gyro911

You are listening to a SOUNDCLIP. That means you are listening to lossy compressed audio through your little laptop speakers or through a set of cans, and it WILL NOT sound the same as it will in real life. Period. If you are expecting to get a live experience from YouTube, you are naivety embodied, friend.

    @Ketil

Does your talent know no bounds? :)

  • All the tones are close enough for me! Heck, I have a few mesa's that havent been turned on since I got my AXE(rkv1 and M5). Amazing unit. Amazing playing. Great job...do more!

  • @cougarLP Thanks ;-)

  • sos un genio felicitaciones,

  • Sei un mostro!!!!! Poi le facce che fa mi fanno morire!!!

  • The master of puppets tone was off then again getting their tone requires a real mesa. that model lacked the tonal depth to nail the MOP sound

  • @Gyro911 Yeah, I've commented on that before, I probably should have worked more on that setting. I must also admit I'm no big Metallica fan really, so maybe that's one of the reasons I didn't put too much effort into it.. But I'm pretty sure I would have been able to nail the sound with the Axe-Fx if I tried harder. By the way, another commenter said he hasn't turned on his two Mesas since he got his Axe-Fx..

  • @rednebb Dont get me wrong this sounds better then the line 6 which is a toy i feel. its tone is thick and flat, This unit has more tonal depth and dynamics similar to a real amp so i give it credit for that however, for 2000 bucks i'd rather get a mark V for one great guitar tone rather then this unit which will give me a plethora sounds that are almost as good as the amps they simulate but not quite. Thats just my preference, i dont really care for effects i want great guitar tone

  • @Gyro911 Yeah, if you want one specific tone from a specific amp and don't need all the other stuff, of course the best thing is to get that amp. So it all depends on your needs and preferences. I play all kinds of stuff and need to have access to all kinds of different sounds and effects, and the Axe-Fx Ultra can provide that.

  • @rednebb OK here's the bottom line, the tones you played there are very believable and sound convincing, however it sounds more like a polished studio release then a live amp that will sound dirty and imperfect with each note. Also it sounds distant which is typical of modeler although this one isnt as obvious but still has a noticeable hint of it. Nevertheless it is convincing but not quite as warm as a tube amp

  • @Gyro911 Ok, thanks. Well, this IS a ("polished" ?) home studio recording.. So you want your sound to be "dirty and imperfect" live, you say? Well, I'm not sure that's what I want, but l guess in the end it all comes down to a matter of taste..

  • @rednebb Do you think this fancy effect processors might actually become cheaper in a not so distant future??

  • @hiladelphia Yeah, I think it might..

  • @rednebb I hope so.. xD in the meantime could you make an entire cover of a song named Riviera Paradise by the great Stevie Ray Vaughan??

  • @Gyro911 Why you want it dirty, nobody wants that, lol

  • @rednebb Your playing is flawless and the tone damn

  • amazing guitar performance...!!!...it's obvious you learned it all by ear and not by tab...crazy good....makes me want an axe fx so I can prove to myself that I can't play all those licks...!!!...haha

  • @synesthesia67,

    I agree!

I was thinking the same thing, especially when I saw him play YJM's "Trilogy: Suite 5" (and played it damn well IMO!)

You could see that he eschewed the YJM "2-string sweeps" in the "Baroque 2-chords-to-a-bar" section and opted for EVH "Ice Cream Man-approved-single-string-triad-stretches" (easier on the picking-hand - harder on the left-hand - LOL!) Atleast that's what I THINK he did?!? Anyways it was great, and yes, I believe he learned this stuff by ear!

  • @billmeedog Yeah, you're right ;-) I learned it by ear originally, but when I had to pick it up again for the recording of this video , I found some tabs to make it easier to remember, but I found that using single-string-triad-stretches worked better for me..

  • Hi Ketil, what are you playing the Axe through?

  • @minghigh Here it goes directly into a small mixer and then to my pc with an Echo Mia audio interface installed. Live I use one or two Atomic Reactor FRs for personal monitoring.

  • hey man! is there anything you can't play on the guitar?? I though i played very well... mamma mia!!! yo are a machine.

  • @eddi4000 Yes.. But thanks! ;-)

  • You are ridiculous!!! I was wondering if this unit is as good as they say, and you definitely answered all of my questions. Thank you for doing this video series and keep making the guitar sing beautifully. My favorite as far as phrasing is the Django.

  • @DueceousVortesis Thanks a lot!

  • umm...I'm gonna need to mug someone for 1,999,99...or maybe just an even 2 grand..

  • Holy mother of god. after hearing about this for a while, i had dismissed it completely, but now, my mind is blown. this thing is amazing

  • @thenathanstone Thanks, yes it's an amazing machine..

  • very awesome playing. I just started looking into the Axe-Fx Ultra and it does sound amazing..

  • @SolDallas01 Thanks!
