people are calling this guy a genius, he's not. While it is creative and a fun "project" it wont be able to drive anything. Lets just say, if i were to drop one of my 12"s in that shoe box, it would implode.
hey relentless intentions b nice. this guy made something. it could b a life saver for a kid who doesn't have the scratch for an expensive cab. save ur negativity for ur lego video game shit. do u make things? or just trash people who do? maybe u just need a hug. if that's the case tiger, turn of ur video games n go outside n tell someone
To all with negative comments: this looks like it was just a fun cheap way to do something gear-productive while he was bored. No need to go out and buy 2 cents of whatever material, he didn't even leave his home I'm sure. And I know if YOU made this, you'd show your friends, and maybe even post it up.
I did the same thing here with an old Phillips Speaker my mom found on the street. Took it for repairing, hooked it up in a cardboard box, and it sounds pretty good. Gonna put it in a combo I'm plannin on building... not in a cardboard box, of course XD
My dad make his first cab like this about 30 years ago. We still have it, although it's kept in a sealed perspex container now in our music room. They work great, and if the cardboard gets damaged, you can easily replace it. Ive taken this one step further for practicalities sake. I now use plastic project boxes. Larger versions of the ones people use to make home made pedals. work great, and like this, the back pops off to make it an open backed cab. Innovation to the masses (Y)
if anyone says anything bad about this guy go fuck yourself. he's what makes us americans great. go spend hundreds to keep up with the jones while crafty inteligent folk get on with what counts!!!
@peterhbyrneI think that the last necessary thing on the world is need of americans to say to the rest of the world how great they are all... You are the best and only people to decide things, and the rest of the world is dirt and garbage good only to shoot them and for practicing of the weapons on. Am i right? Come on friends, let´s go to kill our governments, give the people LSD and come to change this motherfucking world!
@skimam You my friend are overanalyzing the situation. It's called nationalism, not nazism. I'm sure you're country is great too. We just like ours, and we like talk about how proud we are of the ideas that our country was founded on. No one in the U.S. likes everything the government is doing all the time, but i'm sure our leaders do the best they can, as do yours. Unless you live in Venezuela or Cuba or something, then yes, our country (not people) is better than yours.
@peterhbyrne LOL you're chatting such crap. This is what makes people mock americans.
THIS, is an example of someone building a beautiful speaker cabinet from scratch, with such skill that its what makes people forget retards like this guy.
not to rag.. but u can buy 1/4 12/12" tiles for like 2 bucks a peice. that makes a $12 there a little higher density then MDF but its a fiberboard none the less... keeping it sealed most woofer 10" to 12" wont require an entire cubic foot.. so it works out pretty perfect. predrill some machine screws silicon. and its really not a terrible enclosure.
Why is everyone being such a snob about this.. I think its a great idea! I was lookin for a 1x12 that i could bring to my friends house to jam without lugging my cabinet. Its cheap and its light.
That is a novel project, but cardboard really can't provide the acoustical properties of a proper cabinet. That's why they put speakers in cabinets, and not just on baffles with wire-mesh behind for protection, the cabinet itself acts as an acoustical instrument. A pine box the same size as that would only cost about 5 bucks and take about an hour to build, sand, and finish, and will sound a lot better.
You're retarded. Cabinets don't cost $200. I bought a Sheet of 3/4 inch MDF (proper speaker building wood) for $25. It built an enclosure for a 12 inch sub and still has enough left over for another.
This is the stupidest idea ever. It's not just about the speaker cabinet, it depends also on material and soundproofing. I would never say I will see somebody who put such a great speaker to something like that. It will play, of course, but it will never play as great as in real, wooden speaker cabinet. And you have to make some calculations about the volume of the box, and diameter and depth of bassreflex which depends on type of speaker...
i have done that also. but instead of using a built speaker, i have constructed my own. Of course it doesnt sound amazing but its pretty good and it is literally under 1 dollar (well actually the magnet for the speaker was like 3 dollars but you get the idea.)
lolol people need to understand that this speaker cab isn't going to sound up to par with a normal cab. Dimensions and material GREATLY matter in the sound but it is only 1 speaker so you don't have to worry about the phasing issue. It's a really cool diy project and I think its a great idea for 1 dollar. It's light and I think it would be great for small little jams to carry around. You could throw it in your backpack and go! It's hilarious how people are trying to compare the cardboard.
wut??? You are going to get the gist sound of the speaker, it's just not going to be brought out like a 1x12 made out of birch would. not sure what you mean by that comment though.
It probably sounds just fine at lower volumes because with any cab you're only hearing the speaker at lower volumes anyway. But at higher volumes it probably doesn't sound that great because that's when you really hear the cab's influence on the tone.
Nobody's saying it won't work. And, some of us "critics" have been playing and doing studio work for plenty of years. We're just questioning how good it will sound. Part of the tone is the density of the wood in the cabinet and it's resonance. Not much resonance in cardboard. No one's criticizing TTK personally. It's a fun idea. Functional? Maybe. Usefull? For the amusement factor. Practical and a good tone option? Probably not.
Plug something in it and show us how it sounds!!!
If it's not gonna blow up (I mean the box), then I'm pretty sure it's gonna jump all over the place. You have to put some bricks or something in there to make it heavy and steady. With such huge speaker the vibration is gonna be crazy!
Open and Closed back speakers sound very different from each other. I'm sure it would be the same with this but I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith in this project. It's cool but for a $50 investment in wood glue and screws you could put together a very presentable, functional and decent sounding cabinet.
This is actually the absolute coolest thing you've done. I'm sure the "tone" isn't top notch but it's just really neat. I have a lil' smoky amp that was actually made to look like a cigarette pack that would just be cool as hell with a little cab like that. Btw...if you have a bunch of those Carvin speakers laying around you can also donate them to me...LOL. I actually like the cheap little things.
A way to help this would be to glue/screw in a baffle board of mdf or 9 ply baltic birch inside the box and screw the speaker into it. Would do wonders to help the sound and it would still be very inexpensive.
I think you could laminate the box and have a much harder enclosure. Why would it sound bad? Well? Oh well yes,the niegh sayers are always quick to call it. The sky is falling!! But if it were in fasion to ram a broom handle up your ass, and go to work in the morning, well, the streets would be much cleaner. It's a fucking box!! Just like the one your speaker is in. It may or may not sound great, but it's a box, and none of you have ever made one. "Umm no, it can't possibly work".
Are there any clips of it?

Thats what makes American craftsmanship worthless in a direct comparison... Sorry but I think that its only a half thing... Imho it`s crap!
Why don't get some wood (maybe plywood, if it should be cheap - for 10 bucks) and build a solid and a certainly better sounding box?
It could be lacquered or you put a fancy veneer on it.
And it was the creators weekend-Project? Man, this should be be done within 15 min.
