I love reading the transparent homophobia on the comments section "I'm not a homophobe or anything... I just don't want it RAMMED down my throat..." The fact is - There are 5 series of Trek to enjoy if you want to see a unrealistic representation of the future, Odyssey are showing you gay characters, because gay people exist. WE'VE been seeing traditional male & woman relationships for years, which WE DON'T RELATE to, but we've looked past it and enjoyed the story... It's time you did the same.
On the matter of the gay characters, its like your ramming it down our throats, the fact that they are gay does not affect the over all plot or story line. Basically, 'I' am being told, " a bunch of gays who like Star Trek made a video, thousands of fans try to tell you, we dont need the "flaming", and you tell us we do. Meet us half way, make a video that does not involve the topic, see what happens. I like the Odyssey series, but I can not show it to my kid, as my dad did to me with Star Trek
Although I've only seen the odd clip or two from other Trek fan flicks I've really got into Odyssey. Even though I've never seen Hidden Frontier (Sorry) I think the characters who ended up in Odyssey are good and the acting isn't that bad. They saved that for Intrepid. As a British Trekkie I'd just like to say Why the Heck can't WE have a decent fan series?
As for the gay issue, I think most Trekkies/Trekkers (Argument for another day) are grown up enough to Deal With It. écrasez l'infâme!
@tehocan Hey dude! There IS an awesome British fan film! Check out my page, and watch Part 1A first, or the playlist. Hope you enjoy it, and tell your pals!
Agreed - Rob Caves, the Exec Producer for Helena Chronicles and Odyssey follows in the footsteps of Roddenberry, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, and Rick Berman. These two series are what true Trekkies expected at the theater when Abrams' film was released.
I agree with Regemo - I've watched the entire HF series and all of the episodes thusfar of Odyssey and HC, and I have seen nothing that is "out of place" from traditional ST series. The Archeins in Odyssey really remind me of the stirring backstory of the Diminion, Cardassians and Bajorons in later seasons of DS9. While the sense of exloring the unknown in farwaway space stays consistent with Voyager themes. The "exploration" ingredient is something that has ALWAYS been a major part of ST.
While The HC introduces a flavor of "renegade starship" reminiscent of what we saw Kirk face in the major films "The Search of Spock" and "The Voyage Home." And the corruption within the Federation reminds me of another classic Sci-Fi series, Babylon 5. The stories are in-depth and well-written I think, worthy of a nod from Roddenberry himself. This feels so much more like the Trek I'm accustomed to than the new movie that came out. Look up "Of Gods and Men" on here. Pretty good fan film too.
Who cares really that there's same sex or hetro couples in a show like this or any other offcial or fan made series? Let us enjoy the show, written and filmed for us, out of the love for this show. Leave the hate off line, we don't need to listen to hurtful words. If you don't want to watch some same sex couple kissing or what-not then don't watch! It's that easy. We have enough hate in this world, and I'd rather not see such mean comments on Youtube.
Actually it does exist. The writers and producers of past trek series have gone on record as saying it, that they pretty much didn't show it due to unwanted controversy in a commercial product. So everyday sexual preferences were assumed but not shown, which is still kinda pathetic. Great that times are changing phobias are being exposed for what they are.
I admire you for using some openly gay characters, but I do believe that some times the gayness goes a little overboard. Even my gay friend agrees. Openly gay is okay, but too far is too far.
I agree on this, the show is definitely enjoyable the way it is.
And concerning the gay characters, two things have to be noted here:
1. It was about time Star Trek of all franchises picked up that issue. After all, the Federation is oh-so-openminded and stuff, so things like different sexual orientations shouldn't be any big deal, now should they? ;)
@Draco1985m And Hidden Frontier demonstrated Starfleet's open mindedness towards the issue very well in one of the first episodes it was hinted at, "Perihelion," where Nevin consults his friend Rawlins about Aster's affections, even though the two of them (Nevin and Aster) had not seen each other since they were at the Academy. Nevin: "But I mean, he's a guy." Rawlins: "Whatever pilots your starship."
2. Their display of these relationships is really similar to how Hollywood portraits heterosexual relationships. Look at some movies and count how often you see the male main character and the female main character make out, sometimes in a very graphical way bordering on "soft porn".
So HF and its spinoffs aren't really that much "overboard", its just that we aren't used to seeing gay characters portrayed this way. ;)
I certainly don't think it is overboard at all. Hidden Frontier was the first series to tackle the issue, and they've not taken it any further than most television series have done with heterosexual couples. Those that complain that the gay storyline is "overboard" are those that are anti-gay to begin with. They're analogous to whites in America during the 19th Century. Many didn't mind blacks being free, but not all Americans wanted blacks to have 100% freedom either.
The gay thing doesn't bother me but overt making-out scenes, hetero or homo, are distasteful to me. I'd prefer sticking to the story - which, after all, is what this is all about - and minimize the tongue-wrangling. If I want to see that, there are any number of websites I can turn to for gay or straight lovemaking. There's not much more to where I can turn for sci-fi action, please do not dilute it with gratuitous crap.
There were intimate scenes in the ST:TOS for Kirk, Spock, McCoy. In ST:TNG for Picard, Riker, Troi, Crusher, Data, Geordi. In ST:Ds9 for Sisko, Kira, Dax, Worf, Odo, Quark. In ST:VOY for Janeway, Chakotay, Paris, Belanna, 7of9. And many more, but there's not enough space to list them all in this box lol. So this show is following in a great tradition and at the same time for a change it's not being homophobic.
@JTREK Homophobic twat. Think how many HOURS of Trek have been dedicated to a man and woman showing affection, exploring relationships, kissing, courting, dating, marrying, argueing, etc - A gay relationship has NEVER legitimately been represented in any of the 5 series! I'm glad Odyssey have represented REAL LIFE, and I'm sorry you and "your gay friend" are uncomfortable by that...
I really love the acting on this show. The combination of bajoran, betazoid, and romulan main characters is very interesting. And there's more great space, planet, and starship special effects than u get to see on tv!
Looks great guys! I'm excited. Nice to finally see Ro showing he still loves Aster. I know he's trying to be strong for his crew, but he has to show that he misses him. Love it!
@HiddenFrontier Are you kidding me? You cannot have gay people aboard a Federation starship. There has never, ever, been even a HINT of Homosexuality in Star Trek. EVER. Get the gay people out.
