It was only started by ants. It was finished by badgers over a thousand years later when the Eloi consultancy group in charge of the project realised the ants were just going to leave it half done. They had also used the bathroom fittings on another job and flogged all the stone that was supposed to be for the walls to a chap from Gaul that they'd met down the pub.
as someone who lives just ten minutes from Stonehenge, my biggest issue is all the tourists, cant walk round my own town! Old Sarum is close too which is amazing to visit and much less tourists!
@sweetjemimer It's a shame therefore you miss the point. Tourists, like them or loath them, is the life blood of this nation now. They come here and boost our economy. 80 percent of the visitors to places like SH are foreign tourists, not British people. If we didn't have the tourists, yes, it would be more peaceful but we also wouldn't have half the money to be able to preserve places like this for the future. Not having a go, just stating that times have changed.
@annikee59 The road is prehistoric. It's always been there. Its the main arterial road to the West Country and a perfect advertisement for the henge. As a local and regular visitor I can say that most times I hardly hear the road & certainly doesn't affect the stones any. If you want an example of how destructive roads have been, there's Avebury Stone Circle where the road goes right through the henge! Ever noticed how many railways are next to medieval castles. Blame those victorians.

....why is everyone so uu about stone hendge. for christ's sake, they're not even the oldest standing buildings or temples, check Hagar Qim, Ggantija, Imnajdra!
mnajdra is 3000 years older than stonehenge, unlike stonehenge it is not a circle but built in an anthropomorphic stature, it has complex designes and decorations, and on the longest day of the year, the sun rises and its rays pass through the corridor bang centre in the middle of the altar demonstrating mathematical precision. and i repeat, it is 3000 years older than stonehenge
Why do you have to repeat your statement like it's some competition? I already agreed that Malta's temples were older than we have in Britain. So what? In Mesopotamia and Egypt they are even older than Malta. Stonehenge is unique, there's just nothing else quite like it but the cultures of Malta and Britain share very little in common, and yet the same basic idea persists. Alignment to the sun & moon on important days in the calendar. They are all remarkable for the time in which they were made.
did i repeat myself? sorry, the comment got remove and it was over a year ago hehe im just saying, if stonehenge is unique then maltese temples are things of mythology and disbilief that's all
"mnajdra is 3000 years older than stonehenge" and "and i repeat, it is 3000 years older than stonehenge" - Posted 2hours ago! I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say here, but we don't need to argue as both cultures have a long history, but not really comparable as they are at totally different ends of the Earth. In many ways the monuments in Britain are astounding because we developed on the edges of the known world with little influence and help.
Where did you get 3000yrs older than Stonehenge from? Stonehenge dates from 3100BC but the site has been in ritual use since 8,000BC. Most of Maltas temples date to 4,000BC, less than 900 years older. You've got some great stuff there, make sure you take good care of it.

I was there last year and it was great. Sadly it was really windy and it was too cold for me to stick around as long as I would have liked.

@TombstonedM Yes, I've visited most of the Malta temples, amongst some of the oldest structures but nothing like Stonehenge.
