The reason he prefers the bottle is because the flow of milk is much faster than the breast. I would stop offering him the bottle. He will need to get used to the breast, but after a few days, he will figure out what he's doing. Remember, he needs to learn how to breastfeed. It takes practice for both of you! Talk to a lactation consultant. These women are amazing and can make a huge difference in your experience. I breastfed my daughter for 13 months..no bottle until she was 10 months.
@bleepbleepblah The first couple of weeks were extremely difficult. Latching was tough because my breasts were very engorged, and the feedings were painful. I had to pump a little bit before feedings to make my breasts softer to facilitate a better latch. But, my daughter got much better at it every day, and soon we were having no problems at all. Yes, breastfeeding can be difficult but don't give up! It's an amazing experience and the benefits to both mom and baby are worth it.
I suggust getting in touch with a good lacation consultant! they will help you in like 20 min. Nipple shields can prevent infants from learning how to latch on right. using bottles isn't going to help you try finger feeding him or tube feeding while he is latched on your breast. I really think a lactation consultant will help you and fix the problems your having :-) Also there is a great latch video here on youtube :-)
Its great that you are breastfeeding. I knwo how hard it is! My son is just on 5mo, and as the months go by breastfeeding does get easier and easier. So fingers crossed it gets easier for you! I found spending time with my son skin to skin made him really want to breastfeed more as he could see/smell the milk/boobs. He is such a cutie!!
I am having the same problem! We were both due around the same time, and I had Oliver at 36 weeks and 2 days (which is considered premature where I live) And they had to give him formula because he wouldn't latch on and his sugars were low. Now he refuses to nurse, so I have to pump and supplement with formula, which sucks, but the consultant figures when he reaches his due date he should be able to nurse, hopefully. I hope our boys get this breastfeeding thing down pat!! :)
also try to lay on your back skin to skin with him on you, they tend to look for it like that. its good you are at least able to give him milk. Mine never came in good enough because they gave Damon formula at the hospital.
ditto to the nipple shield it really helped my son's latch! But they're so easy to misplace so I bought a bunch and keep them all over the house and in the car.
have you tried a nipple shield? it may help to transition him off the bottle to the breast full-time... once he's off the bottle you can then "wean him" off the shield.
@xpoeticxtragedyx We had one at the hospital and misplaced it, I looked at Wal-mart for one they didn't have it, I will look again because i really want it now that my milk is fully in. because I know it will make a big difference.
They say breastfeeding taking more work, and the bottle is less work for him. The La Leche class I went to said to not bottle feed until they're a month old, so they get used to the nipple (and the work) :) But I mean...u have to do whatever works. That's great you're breastfeeding. :)
I know what you did. NICE!!!
