"Religious beliefs" have been used in this country's not to distant past to argue for the perpetuation of slavery, non-suffrage for women, etc. etc. "Religious beliefs" lead devout Islamic fundamentalists to stone and maim their own daughters. "Religious beliefs" spur the denial of access to condoms in HIV-plagued Africa. How useful are these beliefs in the protection of all of our citizens, really? We need a basic decency line over which religious ideas cannot reign.
