It is bad that this Church is rebuild... It was a symbol for the big fault the Germans made in WW-II. The fact that they ruined Europe and killed so many people, which made this attack neccesary, should be a good reason to keep the ruins of the Church. Even the name "Frauenkirche", or Church of our Lady, denotes this. @Imprudentman Indeed, even in 1944 an Allied victory was not so obvious. Adolf Hitler often boasted of using his 'super weapons' against us. The German Reich had the V1 and V2 rocket and they were not far off having a nuclear warhead for them that could have been launched against London, Moscow, Allied troop formations etc. As it was, the V1s and V2s caused extensive damage just with their conventional explosive payloads. The RAF and USAAF bombed these V1 and V2 rocket sites whenever possible.

@Imprudentman The answer is simple, and easily found in any remotely truthful history book. At the end of the war, the allies agreed with a demand by Stalin that all ethnic groups would be forcibly returned to their "native lands." That meant anyone with German roots was forcibly evicted from the East (Russia and the "new" Poland) and sent to the West. Many were generations removed from living in Germany. All "Russians" were forced to go East, though most were liquidated when they arrived.
@Imprudentman The action was later stopped by the Americans and British when they finally realized they were doing exactly the same thing Germany had done during the war...but the damage was done. People weren't supposed to go to Berlin, largely because the city couldn't feed or house them, but the Russians were content to drop them there, because they hoped the headache would cause the western allies to leave the city. It didn't work out that way, much to Stalin's displeasure.

Conditions were such that millions of Germans were fighting on different fronts in Europe and Africa, and were fooled propaganda Goebbels. Therefore been taken intimidation of the German people. By 1943 some 1,000 Luftwaffe night fighters were committed to the defence of the Reich. 8,000+ dual purpose 88mm guns were also used with a further 25,000 light flak guns. The 88mm gun was an awesome AA weapon and a deadly destroyer of tanks and advancing infantry. These weapons would have done much to bolster German defences in the East.

The cross on top of the Frauenkirche was made by the son of one of the men who bombed it. England lost its ancient Coventry Cathedral too, do not forget that. @trevlacme Lutherans kept many pre-Reformation symbols in their churches because they were CHRISTIAN symbols, not just "Catholic" ones. Even the name "Frauenkirche", or Church of our Lady, denotes this. The point of my comment was one of reconciliation and commonality in relation to the destruction and rebuilding of this particular church. If you want to engage in anti-Protestant anger and accuse Lutherans of "stealing" the cross from Catholics, then by all means be small minded and do so.

There was a Catholic congregation there before the 16th century Reformation. This church with the dome was originally constructed in 1722, replacing one that was mostly used for burials.

@RedGoblinus Leaving aside the tremendous loss of life, it is hard, as a pipe organ builder, to decide whether the loss of beautiful historic organs in Britain during the Blitzkrieg is most heartbreaking, or if the senseless destruction of historic organ masterpieces in Dresden (and elsewhere in Europe) is the greater loss. The claim of 'we lost more' would be more powerful if Dresden (for example) had been spared, along with many of the world's treasures.

The German Reich had the V1 and V2 rocket and they were not far off having a nuclear warhead for them that could have been launched against London, Moscow, Allied troop formations etc. As it was, the V1s and V2s caused extensive damage just with their conventional explosive payloads. The RAF and USAAF bombed these V1 and V2 rocket sites whenever possible.

@Imprudentman The answer is simple, and easily found in any remotely truthful history book. At the end of the war, the allies agreed with a demand by Stalin that all ethnic groups would be forcibly returned to their "native lands." That meant anyone with German roots was forcibly evicted from the East (Russia and the "new" Poland) and sent to the West. Many were generations removed from living in Germany. All "Russians" were forced to go East, though most were liquidated when they arrived.

@Imprudentman The action was later stopped by the Americans and British when they finally realized they were doing exactly the same thing Germany had done during the war...but the damage was done. People weren't supposed to go to Berlin, largely because the city couldn't feed or house them, but the Russians were content to drop them there, because they hoped the headache would cause the western allies to leave the city. It didn't work out that way, much to Stalin's displeasure.

The RAF left all miliary sites untouched, but burnt & buried 500 000 Silesian refugees alive in the Firestorm they started.
Those who ran into the water basins on the Altmarkt, as human torches, were boiled in there alive. Churchill targeted Hospitals, orphan's homes, housing areas and the RAF-cowards even attacked firefighters and Red-Cross nurses.

COVENTRY - centre of aggressive British militarism & British war production: Legitimate military target. The Germans targeted not the British people (even though they qere guilty of starting the war), but only ammunition factories.
DRESDEN: No military targets, except a few at the edge of the city: Airport Dresden-Klotzsche, casernes in Dresden-Albertstadt. Neither was inside the target area of the RAF-Firestorm - both survived the war untouched. The RAF preferred to kill children.
