how can you say the ps3's primary function is not video play back?? all ps3 games are on blu-ray disks and it reads disks the same as a dedicated player.
People should get their priorites right. First think about getting HDTV and some HD-channels to watch and then later focus on Bluray or PS3. Why? Because they are useless whitout HDTV.
And people which already have an HDTV, get Bluray or PS3 otherwise you have been throwing money away when you bought the damn TV. Sure I understand you'll wanna wait until the price is lower or when the best player is out but you still gonna buy it sooner or later. So why the wait.
Is it me or is the Blu-ray format taking longer to be a hit with people than when the VHS and Beta, VHS to DVD or the Cd vs Cassette war happened?
I mean forget the price, VHS and CD players were expensive in their day but it caught on faster than the Blu-Ray has. I still buy DVD's not because I can't afford a Blu-ray player but because I'm not really all that impressed.
Its not just you its really not caching on, blue ray burners are overpriced gettin scarce & fading out, even bill gates dont want blueray for XboX, High definition DvD has been replaced with XDE technology.
Disc media recording is big cumbersome, and its almost obsolete and getting to be of little use, blue ray writers are almost useless with flash memory being here, and the blue ray price point makes it even more an overexpensive overkill. A blue RaY writer at 100$ is quite acceptable for convenience sake, but certainly not because its a necessity, and at a higher price than 100$ a blue ray writer isnt even worth it. Even for movie buffs, its not worth it, just get freeview or rent DVDs

I also have to disagree with the laserdisc comparison. Laserdisc failed for multiple reasons: weak studio support, cost ($60/disc), loud & clunky players, oversized discs, and the fact that you had to flip discs in the middle of the movie. Blu-ray faces none of these disadvantages (aside from cost which is becoming less of an issue as time goes by). LD vs. Blu-ray is a case of apples & oranges.
I don't think Blu-Ray will become mainstream like DVD. It will probably be like laser discs were. Blu Ray may look better, but most people don't care about the difference in picture quality enough to fork out more money and buy all their movies over again (especially since the jump from DVD to Blu-Ray isn't near what the jump from VHS to DVD was, and a lot of people just switched from VHS to DVD within the last 5 years and are not ready to make the switch all over again so soon).

Ok I just looked up wikipedia and they say this is what the updates are all the updates from 2.10 and older firmware, the operating stability of some online PS3 format software has been improved, and finally support for PS2 games with optional and mandatory installs.

Hey Chris, I totally agree with you on the cons. I personally think there is nothing wrong with VHS and DVD. If you compare an SDTV set with HDTV set side by side, the image quality is not that mich different. I think DVD and even VHS quality are fairly good. I would prefer DVD though because it will play on my PC and won't wear out.

A PS3 is the best Bluray player, mainly because of the fact that the firmware is easily updatable....it even notifies you of updates, instead of you stumbling upon a new update months after its been released.
Sony has been losing about 300 dollars per PS3 console it sells, they took a gamble with Bluray, and won. They will redeem that 300 dollars later when the format has reached mass consumer market levels.
I have a PS3, Bluray looks amazing on my Aquos. Im really glad that it won the war.
Just in case you were not aware they the PS3 just turned a profit for Sony last month thanks to their streamlining of the whole production process and the scale they are making them at now. IE, they are not only not losing 300 per console, they are making money on them. That 300 loss was only during build up and setup, no longer.

I think im going to get a PS3. IT is the most future proofed blu ray player (BR 2.0). At the same time i am very sketchy with blu ray. I don't feel like it will last that long and soon discs will be gone. Digital distribution will most likely take over.

Of course Blu-ray will be dead soon and replaced with internet downloads. New technology in copper wires allows 250Mbits per second and can download a 2GB movie in a matter of minutes.
True, but you still need some sort of media to back it up and Blu-ray with 25gb's or so, will be the key for fast back-ups on external media. Not to metion if you want to give someone huge files in person, it can be given on one disc and not five.

well, incase you cant remember dvd was around for a long time....and movies started getting better quality and higher res....so eventually we should see blu ray discs being filled up but not for sometime, and also blu ray is great for backups, you could store a lot on just one single layer disc, even todays standard dvds are enough....also ps3 games can use the storage space...killzone 2 will fill at least 25 gb of the disc up, all the models are at least twice the poly of killzones 1's
sure killzone is great on graphics,but did you ever seen crysis runing?you know what is needed to run the game perfectly?you need a graphic card geeforce 8800 ultra with directx 10,shader moddel 3.0 with 512mb(ps3 only have an holder version of this chip with 256mb,and only has directx9),a cpu with at least 2cores and 2ghz clock runing(the cores are more bigger then those on the cell processor),3gb ram ddr3 on the system(ps3 only has 256mb xdr),and all the other things.Ps3 can´t match this.
you would not need an 8800 ultra...you could grab an 8800gt or the new 9600gt for under 200 GBP and 4 gb of ram for 100 and a 2.5ghz dual core cpu, it would run nicely on high...

Most likely u need some glasses. But...there's a 99% chance that your TV is not a blu-ray compatible TV. U won't see no difference because it's using the same graphics as DVD if your TV is crap.

A PS3 is the best Bluray player, mainly because of the fact that the firmware is easily updatable....it even notifies you of updates, instead of you stumbling upon a new update months after its been released.
Sony has been losing about 300 dollars per PS3 console it sells, they took a gamble with Bluray, and won. They will redeem that 300 dollars later when the format has reached mass consumer market levels.
I have a PS3, Bluray looks amazing on my Aquos. Im really glad that it won the war.

Just in case you were not aware they the PS3 just turned a profit for Sony last month thanks to their streamlining of the whole production process and the scale they are making them at now. IE, they are not only not losing 300 per console, they are making money on them. That 300 loss was only during build up and setup, no longer.

I think im going to get a PS3. IT is the most future proofed blu ray player (BR 2.0). At the same time i am very sketchy with blu ray. I don't feel like it will last that long and soon discs will be gone. Digital distribution will most likely take over.

Kaleb34- there will always be portable cheap media. How will anyone archive anything without cheap media that can be stored in different locations without worry. I think the biggest problem with disc in general is that it does not have any casing around it to protect the data (Something like a floppy disc have).

Of course Blu-ray will be dead soon and replaced with internet downloads. New technology in copper wires allows 250Mbits per second and can download a 2GB movie in a matter of minutes.

True, but you still need some sort of media to back it up and Blu-ray with 25gb's or so, will be the key for fast back-ups on external media. Not to metion if you want to give someone huge files in person, it can be given on one disc and not five.

you get a blu-ray which is around 500 dollars at best buy
you get internet on your hdtv instead of hooking up your computer up to it.
you have a 80 gig harddrive on the ps3.

Blu-ray discs aren't just 25GB.
60% of Blu-ray movies use 25GB discs & 40% use 50GB dual layer discs.
so really it's 8.5GB VS 50GB, that's almost 6 times the capacity of DVD.
and almost 12 times the capacity if we are talking about a single layer 4.7GB DVD
that's a huge leap.

well, incase you cant remember dvd was around for a long time....and movies started getting better quality and higher res....so eventually we should see blu ray discs being filled up but not for sometime, and also blu ray is great for backups, you could store a lot on just one single layer disc, even todays standard dvds are enough....also ps3 games can use the storage space...killzone 2 will fill at least 25 gb of the disc up, all the models are at least twice the poly of killzones 1's

sure killzone is great on graphics,but did you ever seen crysis runing?you know what is needed to run the game perfectly?you need a graphic card geeforce 8800 ultra with directx 10,shader moddel 3.0 with 512mb(ps3 only have an holder version of this chip with 256mb,and only has directx9),a cpu with at least 2cores and 2ghz clock runing(the cores are more bigger then those on the cell processor),3gb ram ddr3 on the system(ps3 only has 256mb xdr),and all the other things.Ps3 can´t match this.

you would not need an 8800 ultra...you could grab an 8800gt or the new 9600gt for under 200 GBP and 4 gb of ram for 100 and a 2.5ghz dual core cpu, it would run nicely on high...
