The only species of shark that does not have the distinct 2 rows of razor teeth, instead it has Baleen like whales do. ^.^ Look it up, they are quite amazing creatures. Secondly, any animal in fear or pain should be avoided - it doesn't matter how harmless they may be normally, a 15+ foot shark in pain should be left alone. Basking sharks might not have teeth, but if that thing gets scared and whacks you with it's tail, it's going to break some bones. I also doubt anyone there actually knew it was a basking shark - they saw a shark and wanted to avoid it.

What could they even do? It was getting water.
